5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Still here and two more days to go. I have travelled to a lot of beautiful hotels over the years but never one with such a wow factor. The panoramic views are dramatic and take your breath away when you first arrive. The drive from the airport is long and not easy because of navigating the mountains. The first thing you see when you arrive is reminiscent of a multi story car park. If I hadn't read about that in a review I would have been very wary. But the minute you walk through the stylish interior and out the other side to the terrace you are knocked sideways by the awesome setting. There is something very right about the way this excessive monolithic structure sits in the landscape. The scale of the natural environment is vast and so is the building and something about the juxtaposition of the modern rather heavy, clumsy structure and the landscape works. Its like a setting from a Bond Movie. They have thought of everything. Detail is important here. From the well stocked locker in the spa to the cabanas with movable blinds. The rooms are very well thought out and everything works for your comfort. The cinema is fabulous and they have cleverly designed it with a vast clear window so you can see the screen from the bar. There is a choice of restaurants. The food offering could be a little better but the service is outstanding. In fact from the initial welcome the staff have been friendly, well trained and efficient. So praise indeed and deservedly so. I brought my young adult children and got lots of points for the cool factor. I hope to come back next year and find things the same. Oh yes and the rooms are silent. That is rare in hotels.

My husband and I went here for our honeymoon. The views are breathtaking as are the beaches. It is a beautiful resort with a cinema and beautiful views of the sea and islands. The rooms were very comfortable and the staff were very helpful. However the lady at the guest relations desk wasn't very helpful and was unable to recommend any activities. It was only on our last day that someone near the water sports centre told us about the boat tours that takes guests to islands.

The jacuzzi was never working properly but the spa management offered us a free hamam experience which was exceptionally good. The staff at the spa was very welcoming and friendly.

One major downside was that the food was incredibly overpriced and not very good. As there is nothing close to the hotel we could only eat the hotel food and it really wasnt worth the price. It was quite disappointing! Apart from that is it a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. Will definitely visit again!

My wife and I and the two children, first visited D-Hotel 2yrs ago and then it was Select Maris. We thought it was an idyllic place then. Facilities were great, the kids were well catered for and the food, entertainment and location were perfect. It was Alex's first season as General Manager...and he promised it would be better the following year.

We decided to return this summer, this time without the children and again we were warmly welcomed again by Alex and his team. The hotels transformation is immediately obvious from the moment you arrive and looks outstanding. The hotel itself has been totally changed with guest rooms cut from 400 to just 200 and completely renovated. There are new bars, a cinema, new restaurants, a new swimming pool, live music every night, a new gym set up, re-vamped tennis courts and a fantastic 8th floor executive club lounge where the manager, Lina made us so welcome and looked after us so well for the week we were there, that we didn't want to leave! Infact the only thing that hasn't changed is the fantastic vista and the beautiful sun sets.

For the water-sport lovers this place is second to none. Guests have the free use of the hotels kayaks to explore the immediate cove and coastline. There is a sailing school, completely fitted out with catamarans, a dive school, where Padi qualifications can be gained if desired and the water skiing school, where water-skiing, mono-boarding or doughnut riding can be experienced. In addition there are 3 yachts available to rent, for those with deep pockets. 'Pasha' is the latest addition and is a beautiful sail yacht, complimented by Sunseeker and Azimuth power yachts.

Almost forgot...the ESPA. The spa has had a complete makeover and offers too many treatments for me to try and list (remember) here. Suffice to say, you will not be disappointed.

Alex is supported by a great team of staff. The service is excellent. Very personal, there when you need it but not at all intrusive. We visited for a week of relaxation and to unwind in June this year. We did plenty of both, in bucket loads, whilst sharing quality time together. It's a place where couples can go for time together but also where children are always welcome. We usually 'do' activity type holidays and the thought of staying in one place for a holiday up until 2yrs ago was too boring for me to consider. I have to say Select Maris/D-Hotel changed my outlook completely...we love the place.

If you are thinking about visiting, do it, you will not be disappointed. Airport transfers are available from Istanbul, via the new business class equipped seaplane (1hr ish), or from Bodrum and Dalaman in either the hotel helicopter (20mins) or one of the hotels Audi A8 limousines (90mins). We did the A8 from Bodrum on the way in and as a treat departed in the helicopter. It's a fantastic location when seen from the air!

We are already looking at suitable dates to return next year, this time with the boys...

Neil

Room Tip: Get a higher floor room, central if possible for a great view of the bay...

Thank you for your kind words about the employees and service at the hotel. We are delighted to read such a great review.

Wonderful to see that you have enjoyed our spa as well as the water sports at our hotel, along with the service provided. It means a lot to the team to be recognised for the work they put into making every guest's stay special.

We appreciate your detailed feedback and we are glad that you had a chance to try both ways for hotel transfer: by car at our arrival and helicopter at your departure. Seeing the hotel from the air is quite a great experience.

Very good hotel with very good beaches & sand... Staff are very very nice and kind...Rooms are very clean and silent.... Food is very tasty...It is just like a dream.. Good for couples and those who are in in honeymoon, families with/without children etc.

Beware of mosquitos and bees/hornets. and take insect repellent with you. They bite sooo badly..:(((( Have your dinner after sunset. Because bees do not fly at nights. Otherwise they would invade your table....:))))

There is also a helicopter transfer available from Dalaman Airport from where It takes around 2 hours by road.

Dear guest,

Greetings from D-Hotel Maris!

Thank you for leaving your glowing review of our hotel here on TripAdvisor. It is wonderful to see such high praise of your stay.

The nature is truly unique here and that along with special touches we add for those vacationing makes D-Hotel Maris a wonderful destination.

As you mentioned about our helicopter transfer, it is an alternative for the ones which feel that road trip is long and tiring. With the helicopter from Dalaman you arrive in approximately 25 min and by car, 2 hours road trip.

We regret to hear that you had challenges with the bees and other insects. It is a bit hard to prevent them since we are in the middle of nature, however there are some actions that we take such as burn coffee (natural repelent) in the restaurant areas and also as you mention the usage of repelent lotion by guests can help, as well as eletric repelent in the room. We have also implemented mosquito nets in all our rooms for more comfort.

Despite this, it is heartening to see that you are enjoyed so much your stay with us. We hope that you will be back to join us again in the future.

Warm personal regards,

We had been visiting this resort for many times in the last couple of years even before it belonged to Dogus group. We were always very pleased with our stay. However, when we visitied D hotel this year it was even beyond our already highly established expectations.
We were there 2 times; once in June and once in September. I should say that there were some improvements in the service and food which was not in its best shape the first time we went. I agree to all the comments that have been written about how great the bay, the sea and the beaches, how luxurious and comfortable the rooms are and the great great scenery.
This is for me the perfect location in Turkey to have a holiday for 4-5 nights if you want to relax and be pampered. It is a pity that you cannot take children below 8 since the beach would have been amazing for them. The upside is you don't hear the continuous buzz of children like in other resorts.
If you prefer a vibrant night life and partying of course this is not the place for you.
Also yes the thing about the prices is true, it is very expensive but I think the whole experience comes with a price and mostly it is worth.
My advise would be to definitely take a boat trip to see the neighbouring bays, even travel to some nearby Greek islands if you are staying longer, otherwise it might be a little bit boring after some days. We also took the boat to go to Selimiye to have dinner one night and due to a reservation mistake the hotel made, we were offered the boat for free which was really nice and sign of good customer management. I think the hotel is really trying hard to make you feel comfortable during your stay.

Dear guest,

Greetings from D-Hotel Maris!

Thank you for choosing once again D-Hotel Maris as your holiday destination!

We are delighted to hear your wonderful comment in Trip Advisor about our property. Thank you for the compliments about our beaches, the service and the improvements in regards of the food served at our restaurants. It is a great honor for us to hear that we are a perfect location in Turkey for your holidays.

The privacy, natural romance created by the sunset views, ocean and white sand backdrop along with the mountains, and the special touches we add make D-Hotel Maris a real haven for relaxing and luxury vacations.

Great tip: the boat trips in the nearby islands and trips to Selimiye for dining are also one of the highlights and we strongly recommend to our guest such experience.

The positive ratings you gave us on Tripadvisor are greatly appreciated and we hope we have the opportunity to be at your service again in the near future. We look forward to welcome you back again next year.

You know how some places look terrific on the website, and then when you get there it's awful and the only thing to marvel at is the hotelier's mastery of Photoshop? Well, this place is the opposite. The photos don't do it justice. It is beyond me why they don't post more shots of the white sandy beaches, the 4-poster sunbeds, the cabanas, the wine bar, the cinema and the spectacular views from the terrace of the forest, mountains, beach and Aegean sea (all at once, without even needing to turn your head) because every inch of this hotel is stunning.

Here is just one example of their attention to detail. While the owners of D-hotel can't claim credit for the beautiful sunsets, it's entirely thanks to them that there is a sunset viewing deck, complete with comfy chairs and soft classical music.... they even play a different composer every evening so that no-one gets tired of hearing Tchaikovsky two nights in a row.

The hotel is in a quiet area and then made even more remote by being at the end of a 5km driveway of it's own, but the hotel provides lots of activities. In addition to a tennis school, there is sailing, wind-surfing, kayaking and a National Geographic scuba-diving centre. I am not much of a water sports person, I am more of a lie-by-the-pool and sip-a-pina-colada person, and there is definitely that too. A delicious cocktail menu available throughout the day and delivered to you on your sun-lounger along with fresh beach towels and iced hand towels to cool you. The other reviews are correct - it does come at a price. You've got to admire a place that can charge 35 lira (approx £16) for a Mojito and keep a straight face. However, the way I think of it is this - yes, you could get a cheaper Mojito in Bodrum. But then you'd be in Bodrum.

The food is also expensive - on par with prices in London and New York, but with much less chance of being seated next to Lady Gaga (up to you whether you think this is a good or bad thing). There is, though, a great light-bites menu in all the bars serving burgers, BLT's etc. And while we're on the subject of food, I will just say that it is all presented beautifully and frankly, you could eat if off the floor because the entire hotel is spotlessly clean.

I recommend the D-hotel Maris wholeheartedly - it's contemporary, stylish, quiet, very well done and has an excellent and friendly service. I realise these trip advisor reviews are all relative (one woman's "they couldn't pay me to stay there" is another's Paris Ritz) so I will tell you that I have stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami, the Four Seasons in the Maldives and the Martinez in Cannes and the D-hotel is better than all of them.

Now, to prove that I am not on commission, here are the downsides to the hotel:-
1) It's in the middle of nowhere - there is nothing for miles except the odd village goat. If, like me, you get cabin fever easily, you will be in the car and looking for shops and nightlife in nearby villages by the 4th day. Don't bother. There aren't any.
2) The man who invented the bathroom taps should be shot. You may think that is harsh, but spend a week trying to turn them on and off and then lets talk.
3) The hotel is frequented mostly by couples and many of them are the romantic, cuddly kind. If that sounds like you, then great. Personally, I find cuddly couples more boring than the goat (see above). However, this is entirely offset by the fact that I saw only 3 children at the hotel in the entire week and indeed one of the 5 private beaches does not allow anyone under the age of 12. I spent a day on that beach and came away wondering why they don't make entire countries like that???

That's it. I really can't think of another bad thing to say about the place. Unless you are looking for a bustling nightlife, definitely, definitely stay here. It's beautiful and even though you have read all the reviews and seen all the photos, you will still be thrilled when you arrive at how much more gorgeous it is than you expected.

Room Tip: I do recommend paying the extra for a room with it's own terrace or garden and definitely with a...

I have been in many 5* hotels in great places like Mauritius and the Maldives and D-Hotel Maris compares favourable with any of them. Absolutely the best short haul holiday I have ever had. (Approx 4 Hours from UK) I had never been to Turkey before and had my doubts. I am not saying that Turkey is great but this location and hotel is. In fact there is very little around the hotel so if you like site seeing and noisy nights it is not for you. This is a full blown beach holiday. We picked a car up at the airport and made our own transfer. This hotel is perfectly positioned in a bay in the Aegean sea with warm, clear water and temperatures in the 30's (mid September) I can guarantee you will never have lay on a more comfortable sun bed, usually a four poster and plenty to go round. If you stop the beach boy from laying a towel on it (which puts him out of a job that he is proud to do) he will forgive you and not bother you again. The sea shuttle which takes you to any one of the 5 private beaches of your choice but it needed an oil change when we were there so we had the bonus of speed boat rides all day. There are no hidden charges except that the charge for access to the 'executive' beach because it has limited gazebo's which are used for luxury spa treatments. The transfer time to the hotel from the airport is just under 2 hours or 40 mins if you hire the hotels helicopter. It cost approx £200 a week for the rented (Europ) car. There is also a yacht and crew which you can hire for the day should you happen to be loaded. We ate well for around £40 per head each night in the restaurants. There are also nice burgers and pIzza's with lovely terraces to eat them on diet days which you will need after you have buffeted on the breakfasts for half the week. The fish restaurant, which the sea shuttle will take you to is a nice night out. Although there is live music every night I would say that night life is quiet but still take your nice clothes, there were some very well dressed people there. Mostly Turkish and German guests we were the only English there. I went with my daughter and we both felt comfortable, the hotel is suitable for all age groups. We went for a week and could have stayed longer, 10 days would be wonderful, 2 weeks might overcook it. Some of the pictures I have seen of the hotel were taken before this hotel was refurbished and reopened in April this year. It is impeccable and there are no coconut parasols here.

Down side - Wine is expensive at around £10 a glass. Also the 2 hour transport time from the airport. Get the helicopter if you can afford it. Whichever way you do it, you will not be disappointed when you get there.

Room Tip: Get the sea view it's fabulous.
