We have just returned from a week at the Greenland Hotel. This was the first time we had holidayed in Turkey and weren't sure what to expect. In short we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel and the surrounding area was beautiful.
The Room
The rooms at the Greenland are built in blocks of three storeys and there are 6 blocks in all. We stayed in block 5. The hotel is built into the hillside so it was a fairly steep walk up to the room and being the exercise-shy couple that we are, we were out of breath by the time we got there. The room itself was on the small side with two single beds. The beds themselves were also quite small so anyone over 6 feet might have had to sleep with their legs sticking out the end but nothing that I haven't previously encountered in Greece. The bathroom was also small but functional and clean. No bath but a decent strength shower with a shower screen and not those hideously unhygienic shower curtains you come across in the med. There were three spare plug sockets in the room - two in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. I think a few more would have been useful but take a double plug it you have as much electricical equipment as I do. There was a TV in the room with a couple of American channels - TNT, CSNBC and a couple of European music channels. There was also BBC Prime which showed 'classic' Beeb programmes although not my idea of classics. There was a mini-bar which was well stocked and quite reasonably priced. The maids didn't seem to mind if you stored your own stuff in them. The room also had a fairly up-to-date air-con which allowed you to adjust the speed of the fan and temperature with the remote control. It wasn't too loud but did drown out any returning residents in the block as the walls seemed quite thin and you could hear banging doors and scraping of chairs with it off. There was a balcony - ours looked out over the woods to the side of the property but a better description would be that it was a balconette. It was probably only 4 feet square and just enough room for the two chairs if you wanted to sit 'fighter pilot style with one behind the other! The room was cleaned every day and sheets and towels were changed three rimes during the week. The maids made arrangements with the towels and sheets which gave us a giggle when we got back from the pool.
The Pool
The Greenland has a good sized pool which is 1.9M deep at the deepest part although the majority of it is 1.4M with a 0.9M shelf at the corner. The pool itself was warm when we were there - no big shock to the system when you got in and it seemed to be clean. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. There is also a small circular children’s paddling pool with a small side. The main pool has a corkscrew water flume running into it from the terrace above, which the kids seemed to love. It could have done with a polish though as kids seemed to get the best ride whilst on an inflatable. There was no lifeguard on duty and signs to that effect so your kids are your responsibility at all times.
The food
There is a restaurant by the pool which is open-fronted as soon as the evenings are warm enough. There is a covered area and terrace behind & to the side of the restaurant if you want to have a more al-fresco dining experience.
Breakfast was reasonable with a mixture of continental style fare and hot options. You can have eggs cooked to your liking on the hotplate by one of the chefs. There was tea and coffee in urns as well as hot water and hot milk. You could make you own tea and coffee but take your own teabags or granules if you want de-caf or prefer your own brand.
Lunch was also OK with hot and cold options. One of the good points about the food in general was the variety of salads.
Snacks are served from mid-afternoon and usually consisted of burgers, pizza, wraps as well as the (seemingly obligatory) French fries. A good idea though if you were out on a trip or couldn't be bothered with lunch.
Dinner was the best meal of the day with plenty of choice in starters, mains and a small sweet selection. I not saying the food is a la carte standard by a long way but hot food was still hot or cold (as appropriate!) when you ate it. A criticism would be that the veggie options were limited.
The hotel also serves soup and rolls between 11pm and midnight for those who are peckish after the evening’s exertions.
The fresh bread is the highlight of the food at the Greenland. It's baked fresh every day and is really great.
Drinks
The all-inclusive drinks are OK provided that you don't like branded spirits as these are extra. The only spirits on offer are local vodka, brandy, gin whisky and Raki and NO cocktails, just sprits and mixers. There was a selection of fruit juices and the usual soft drinks from the tap (although once the drinks service moves to the 'pub' after 9pm, soft drinks come from 2ltr bottles. The beer was Tuborg which is fizzy and not strong but refreshing. Red and white wine is also on offer but definitely not a tipple for a wine lover! If you want anything else, you need to pay for it and also anything you want to drink after midnight it's extra.
Entertainment
Daytime entertainment is done by the 'Entertainment' Team and consists of the usual darts, pool, aqua gym as well as rife shooting. The team of Leo, Charlie and the main guy (Ozzy?) were friendly and not too pushy. I gather though that one of the bar staff was given his marching orders on our last day and this caused Leo and Charlie to walk out as well. Hopefully it will all get sorted out as the hotel will be a worse place without them. Evening entertainment was short-lived and a bit late in the evening (10pm). There was the obligatory kids disco beforehand and I was thoroughly sick of Back Lace by the end of the week. Some more variety would have been welcome. The entertainment itself was either in the 'pub' bar or in the 'amphitheatre' which is open-air and below the pool. Highlights were the belly dancer (but be prepared to have to join in), and modern dance show. The 'quiz' and bingo left me distinctly under whelmed. It's a shame the entertainment could have been better seeing as town was a taxi ride away.
Staff
The other staff I've not previously mentioned were all very pleasant and helpful for the vast majority of time. You felt that they couldn't do enough for you and were really friendly. We spend a lot of time larking about with the barmen and generally nothing was too much trouble.
Trips
You can book a selection of trips through the hotel and although we didn't do any, everyone we spoke to enjoyed themselves. We went for a Turkish bath organised by a guy who attends the hotel every day. It was a free transfer to and from the baths and prices seemed to be reasonable. We really enjoyed the experience.
Other stuff
The hotel was almost exclusively English for the week we were there and the atmosphere was really genial. We made some really great acquaintances and it really helped the holiday go well. We would definitely consider going back to the Greenland again but would spend a few more nights out next time as the entertainment was weak.
