“Great place to meet people too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2010

Mr Ali is a perfectionist. He is a very friendly person. He himself cleans everywhere. He gave the information where the Hammam is and where other important places are. He even tried to get the handle of my suitcase repaired. When I was there -on and off 5 nights - there were a few travellers in and out. Breakfast was the same every morning but was OK. Mr Ali may do better if he gets a website to book directly on the internet. And give more specific directions to get there with a map. Also he could do even beter to know and give information about Airport Shuttle, where to get it from and what times. He asked me to find a travel agent and that was almost impossible to find someone who spoke English. It was very difficult for me to find out all these details. I spent half a day and eventually ended up getting a taxi early morning. It cost me 25TL with a bit of negotiations. By the way the airport shuttle bus is about a kilometer away near the Ataturk Statue (Anut) and not that near THY office as specified in the Lonely Planet. And it leaves at 7.30am from that point. Lonely Planet needs to upgrade information please. Please copy my comments. The Whirling Dervishes were not dancing everytime I tried to see them on a Thursday, Sunday and Monday. So I missed.

All that has already be said and written is perfectly true :
Ulusan is THE OTEL (without an "h") in Konya.
Solo traveller, I was very pleased to have in my room the company of...
a baby bear and a baby fox !
A few hundred years ago, Mewlana (Rumi) wrote his famous call
"Come, come, whoever you are.."
Today this call resounds again from Ulusan Otel,
for genuine travellers and wanderers seeking for a quiet and clean shelter.
Will be pleased to meet you there... as I will come again, for sure !

Konya was a delight and so was this fabulous little hotel.

It was recommended in my guide book and I emailed the owner. He said he had a room and I confirmed by email and he said just show up the next day. No credit card taken, no worries. The price was great and the reviews on TripAdvisor were too so we hoped our room would be there the next day.

We caught the bus from Urgup, Cappadocia and were heading to Kas on the coast and wanted to stop in a few places on the way. We left the big suitcases in the luggage room at the bus station on the outskirts of town and hopped on the tram outside the depot heading to Alaadin Parki, the last stop.

When you get off, across the street you'll see Alaadin Street which becomes Mevlani Street further up, the big main street up to the Mevlani Museum. After about 7 minutes walk on the right hand side you'll see a pretty yellow coloured PTT building with blue and white tiles and a little park. At the end of the building and park go right and right in front of the PTT you'll see a little sign "Otel Ulusan" pointing up an alley with telekom public phones all lined up. Head up there and turn right - just follow the Otel Ulusan signs - and you'll see the hotel in the middle of a nice little back street in the Bazaar area.

Reception is upstairs and the hotel is spread over a couple of floors with a marble and chrome spiral staircase separating the two. We were on the second floor in a room overlooking the little street. It was a quiet street and a few men had carts with fruit and veg and other goods outside. At night all that went away, the businesses closed and the street was empty and quiet. The owner took us right upstairs it was probably the easiest and fastest check in I've ever done.

The doors to the unoccupied rooms were all open and every room looked bright, spacious, cheery, airy and spotless and it was wonderfully quiet. Our room had a nice sink and cupboard too which was handy. There were shared washrooms which I normally don't like. But on this night we practically had them to ourselves and they were spotless at night and the next morning. There were two or three toilets and two spacious shower rooms for both men and women. The women's shower had a toilet in it too and the shower room was large and private.

Outside the rooms was a spacious public area. There was a table and chairs with tablecloth where we were told our breakfast would be served. And a cozy lounge room with comfy big velvet chairs and couch, a big fireplace decorated with all kinds of cute nic nacs, a computer terminal, a TV, coffee table. It looked like a great place to relax especially in winter when the fire would be on.

It was all spotless and I noticed there were a few little stuffed animals hanging from coat racks and other cute decorations tastefully put around. It was very sweet, homey and charming, bright and freshly decorated.

We told the owner that we would be leaving at 7:30am and before they begin serving breakfast so not to worry about breakfast for us but he said he would have it ready for us. In the end we decided to leave at 7am so when I got up in the morning I told the night clerk don't worry about breakfast and he said "no problem, five minutes" and soon we were enjoying a hot grilled cheese panini and some yoghurt and tea or coffee which was most welcome before our long bus trip ahead and delicious.

The hotel is in a fantastic location for walking. The main street and park just a block over, the bazaar district all around, the Mevlani museum just a few minutes away, great little restaurants and shops everywhere and beautiful Alaadin Park and hill with it's restaurants and tea houses and mosque and the trams to the bus depot all nearby. It couldn't have been better.

We normally stay at three or four star hotels but if I ever go back to Konya you couldn't keep me from staying at Otel Ulusan if you tried. The price, the service, the location, the cleanliness, comfort and welcoming cheery atmosphere were impressive and make it great value.

We received the information about the otel on the street and the people from Konya knew it was half the price of the rest of the hotels.
This is really a marvellous place to stay following the spirit of ancient turkish hospitality.
If you go to Konya, go there.

We stayed at Ulusan Hotel for 3 nights and was completely satisfied by the service provided considering the convenience of its price! The shared bathroom was very clean and not having a bathroom in our rooms didn't bother us at all. The owner Ali and the other guy taking care of the hotel, Ahmet were so friendly and helpful with everything! They informed us about the touristic and cultural sites to be seen in the city and of course about how to get to these places. The central location of the hotel is a big advantage for visitors to reach the museums, mosques, bazaars easily. Most are at a walking distance to the hotel. Breakfast (toast with cheese, yoghurt, cake, fruits and tea/coffee/fruit juice) was delicious and fulfilling. This hotel is the best of best you can get at that price!

Ulusan was a fine hotel to stay at. The rooms were nice and clean and large, and the staff were friendly, constantly cleaning. The room was comfortable enough without being wonderful, but the heating couldn't be operated from within the room and my bed was quite close to it, so it got very hot and then very cold.

The location was good for the towns attractions, and there was free internet upstairs. Not sure about breakfast as we never took it up if there was any. The bathrooms weren't that clean, but they were usable, as were the showers which were actually hot.

We arrived in Konya on a Friday afternoon during peak market hours. The streets were crowded and confusing so we had trouble finding the central post office near the Hotel Ulusan. When we finally found the Ptt with the help of a young boy running ahead of our car we parked the car and went off by foot to find the hotel. Mr. Ulusan came to the car and drove it around the corner to an overnight parking lot (5TL). Inside the hotel was a warm welcome. The rooms were clean and spacious, as were the shared bathrooms and showers. The only shortcoming was the lack of air conditioning requiring us to leave the window open for night air. Unfortuneately that meant interrupted sleep because of traffic, street and repair noise. Breakfast was a panini and yogurt and not served until 8:30 - 9:00am - not the standard Turkish breakfast we'd come to look forward to on our Turkey travel.
