“great customer service, clean & charming room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

The house is well-maintained and decorated with Ottoman kitsch. For a Pension, I was impressed with the cleanliness and charming decor. There is also a garden, which is a great place to meet other travelers after a long day of wandering the twisted streets, or have breakfast in the morning.

While I was very pleased with the room, the best thing about Bastoncu was the customer service. The owner really goes above and beyond to serve his guests. We wanted to go hiking, and he offered to help us find transportation. On the morning of our hike, he got up early to make our breakfast and even gave us his number to call in case we got stranded. Finally, on the day of our departure, he called to arrange a bus, drove us to the bus station, and walked us into the station to let the bus company know we were there (and couldn't speak Turkish! ;)

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We had the triple room, which was decorated with jars of spices, an old wooden clock, and a window s...

This Ottoman house is well kept and the rooms are ample and clean. It's very basic, no luxury here but you are paying accordingly. A great value option to explore the cobblestone streets of Safranbolu. Ali, the owner was extremely helpful, he even drove us to the Karabuk bus station or else we would miss our bus to Ankara.

Stayed for 3 nights in May 2012. A quite location and very central.
Room excellent. Old world charm.
Owner friendly and helpful. Even free ride to bus. Enjoyed the day trip offered by them at
a very reasonable cost. Lots close by places to eat.
reccomend to others.

This pansiyon was awesome! The house was so beautiful and all the furnishings were attached to our room - woven rugs, gorgeous bedspread, comfy bed, beautiful pattern on roof, decorative fireplace, tasty breakfast. The owner speaks excellent English, and his wife speaks very well too (she will call him if she is having trouble). The bathrooms are small and sometimes shared, but for $35/night for a double room the inconvenience is trivial. It's obviously not the Hilton, but if you are looking for an authentic Turkish experience on a budget, this place is gorgeous.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012 via mobile

My husband and I stayed at Bastoncu pension recently and had a most enjoyable time. The pension is very comfortable and has been beautifully restored , it was very special to stay in a building so old and so lovingly preserved. Ali and his family are very special and extemely hospitable and helpful . The breakast is very generous and eating downstairs was a great place to meet other travellers and we were fortunate enough to meet some really lovely people who we also spent time with on outings in Safranbolu that were organised by Ali. Ali"s mum is a great cook so we had our evening meal at Bastoncu which was reasonable and delicious. Thanks again for making us feel so welcome and thanks Ali for your Bolamar playing, hope we get to see you and your family again. Karen & Terry

The location was excellent and the pension itself quaint. The old town has plenty of character and you can wander through the cobble stone streets enjoying the ambiance.

This hotel was booked by an agency in Istanbul and we had no expectations at all. They told us it would be "pretty basic." They were right.

The owner was pleasant and friendly and looking forward to retiring later in the year when his son takes over the business. We were therefore surprised to hear at breakfast the next morning a request from a Japanese backpacker for another slice of cheese which was met with a straight "no". I admit breakfast was a bit meagre and we have been spoilt in our four weeks touring to having fresh bread in everyplace we stayed, except here.

The room was comfortable but we decided having a shower in a room containing a toilet and basin and about the size of a kitchen table was too difficult. We spoke to backpackers from Australia and Japan and they said for the price it was OK.

Overall this pension is perhaps fine for those on a tight budget with low expectations but not for us.
