“Not a five star, but very nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2008

Just returned from Surmeli and impressions are fresh. First of all, I must say that the hotel is quite isolated and located pretty far from Kusadasi, so if you are the partying and staying night in pubs kind of people, better try somwhere else...because the taxi is expensive and public transportation somewhat unreliable as far as I could see...
This being said, I can tell you I had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. The hotel is very clean and staff helpful, although they don't smile a lot. The season hasn't quite started yet so there wasn't much hussle for chairs around the swimming pools, at the table or around the tennis courts, which was a good thing. But there wasn't very much going on as far as activities and entertainment go, so that wasn't so great. I suppose that latter in the season things change in both cases...
The food was a bit repetitive, but anybody would be able to find something to enjoy, in my oppinion., except breakfast, which was the same every day and horrible, with the same salami and cheese over and over again.
There are 4 swimming pools, one indoor, but the water was cold so we preffered the Turkish bath, which I recommend.
The animation team organizes a different activity each night : bingo, sketches, fire show, Turkish night. The disco starts quite late, at midnight and the music is a bit old but the atmosphere is nice. Sports available include tennis, basketball, voleyball, table tennis, minigolf. Water sports and game room were almost nonexistent at the moment, but they were just setting up I suppose
Overall, a good experience, with plenty of sports, rest and relaxation .

We stayed in this Hotel in 06 had a wonderful time food great beach great clean ans spacious,so we decided to go back again. We where sorry we did the food was slop if you did not eat it for Breakfast you got it for Lunch or Dinner same every Day.
We where not happy with the room either it was unclean it is a huge Hotel but still I expect it to be clean.
The Beach was plagued with wild roaming packs of Dogs and that put me right off walking on the Beach.
The staff where freindly but they get over freindly and want to come live with you in uk lol.
Entertainment well lets say give it a miss same songs same People every night.
Weather it was because we went end of season I do not know but it defo gone down the tubes to me.

Great hotel - we stayed in April so the season had not quite began - some of the restaurants were not open yet.

Large, clean rooms, sheets and towels changed everyday if you wanted - if not leave a card out to say you did not. Plenty of shampoo, shower gel, soaps. Friendly cleaners.

Restaurant was good. Clean. Pretty much the same food every day though. Breakfast was about the best lots to choose from Lunch was normally the same as dinner. Chips were normally cold. Lots of lovely salad things. Plenty of cake! Man in the evening making whatever sauce you wanted for your pasta!

Beach was a bit full of seaweed. Sand was glittery!! Pedaloes and Canoes available.

Kids club was not brilliant - my 4 year old niece managed to "escape" so we did not send them again.

All the staff very friendly and helpful

7 swimming pools, all very clean. Big. Indoor pool was freezing.

Play area for children in the grounds with swings and slide

Empty disco - probably because the music was so old.

Animation team worked well together - friendly but they did try and sit with you a few times in the restaurant. Evening entertainment was funny the first week but seeing it again the next week was a bit of a bore... we had a laugh though

Free internet access.

Good with the drinks - very large measure given. Great cocktails. Bar area was comfortable - sometimes had a live singer and pianist there.

Market downstairs on a Thursday

  • Liked — Large rooms, very clean, great pools, by the beach
  • Disliked — childrens dinners but nothing too bad...

This hotel was the only All Inclusive hotel in the region that was still available. At first my wife and I thought that due to a lot of work there wouldn't be any time left for a holiday. But it turned out differently and that's why we had to decide quickly where we would go. I thought a 5-star hotel would be too luxury for us. But Surmeli Efes was a revelation. Although the season was almost over, everyhting was still availeble. The room was excellent, the food delicious, the staff -from the girls who cleaned the rooms to the managing director- was very kind and treated us with a refreshing hopitality, the garden was a little paradise, the beach was beautiful, the seawater was almost hot, the animation was very funny and the weather was -most of the time- perfect.
Apart from that the All Inclusive-formula was respected fully, and that's not always the case at the end of the season.
It should also be mentioned that this hotel offers its guests a
lot of quality for a very reasonable price.

The hotel presented a very relaxed atmosphere, in which we felt
very comfortable. We are 61 and 58 years old, but we met some very nice young people with whom we got along fine. We met also some nice people from Russia, Kenya, Germany and the UK, with which we had very agreable conversations and who contributed to a wonderful holiday.

We really can recommand this fantastic hotel to everybody.
Sorry, we don't have photos available.

The "garden rooms" or "family rooms" outside should be avoided at all costs. Broken furniture outside, tripping electrics, shoddy interiors and bed in dining area?! We moved inside the hotel. Much better but no family rooms. Suite as a substitue sir? That'll be £250 per day. Evetually got two rooms for a healthy tip. Food OK, nothing special but the place is immaculate. Staff helpful. Entertainment team is hopeless, dont expect Thomson Gold quality. We went in the winter and they must have been on wind down. Same duo in hotel bar every night. The games room is ok but may not be open when advertised. We had bad weather and it needed to be open for the kids. Indoor pool v cold, outdoor massive and clean. Italian restaurant closed in winter. Beach at hotel clean with watersports, away from hotel full of litter. The booze is drinkable, gin is the best, but imported wine and spirits are an arm and a leg EG. £10 for a Baileys, £40 a bottle for avaerage French red wine. The hotel is miles from Kusadasi and the shops in the hotel take full advantage. You will be ripped off. There is a bus service which is cheap and efficient. Watch the taxis - we got conned coming back from Kusadasi. If you cant stand being hassled, leave it alone. Ephesus trip is a must and is 10 mins from hotel. Hotel is a good two hours from the airport. Make sure you have a meal in the hotel before you go to the airport. Two pizzas, a chicken burger, fries and 3 cokes will cost you £44 there!

First impressions are good as you enter the large marbled reception. However, the rooms within the hotel are more of a three star standard, be aware the adjacent apartments are not classed as 5 star by the hotel themselves but you will be sold them as a 5 star holiday
tosay they reached three star would be an exaggeration. Warm, fungus filled unclean fridge, limescaled bathroom tiles and towels that represented a piece of smooth cotton rather than a towel with a pile
....... no luxury here

Arriving early evening we where offered no advise from Reception on dining times, cards that we would discover some three days later we should have had to hire towles for bathing, hotel layout what to expect or when. This was typical of the frontline staff, either their
command of english or communication in general is very poor or they are downright rude, I will leave that to you to decide if you should visit.

At 8.30 on the 1st night a visit to reception to enquire about safe facilities resulted in being informed dinner would finish at 9 - after a 12 hour journey this was less than a good start a rush and not necessary, but as this is the only option of dining, with just one restraunt, you have to make it as the room service menu is limited offering no warm food at all or vegetarian options

Initial night the food seemed acceptable. However a pattern developed
through the week. Food is reincarnated in many guises, how many ways can you do chicken and meatballs?? give it a try you will be surprised. By day three it was down to soup, bread and jam. I would have happily paid extra for an al a carte meal or visited a local restaurant, but this hotel is so remote that there is no alternative.
The hotel is popular with day trippers to Ephesus. So as a hotel guest you dress for dinner, to find you are eating with 700, (yes seven hundred this is not a typo as was the case on the 27th October 2007 for myself and family) hill walkers in trainers and the like, it
resembled more of a rugby scrum or canteen environment than a restraunt to relax and enioy your time away from everyday life. I could tell you many tales there are to many to mention but believe me
it is poor badly managed and unclean

Many of the facilities we had been promised did not operate, we had arrived for half term week, but services finish the week prior, not that we had been advised

The pool area, I can imagine in full swing during summer will be a sun trap and should be buzzing. This particular week was not buzzing,
the animation team are known as the annoying team, unprofessional and
constantly harrassing you. A game of bingo was priced at 10YTL per single strip book, you usually buy 6, so 60YTL for a game - approx £30 the prize was a t shirt or CD's...... this was laughable. Not being a bingo player I had to believe guests when they said they played regulalry and £20 a night in a proper bingo hall was the norm

There is a shop in the lobby for papers, sweets and incidentals. The local Dick Turpin without a mask clearly sets the prices. Daily Mail £3.00, Kit Kat £2.00, Mentos £1.50

I did make my feelings known to the F&B Manager he is the one who looks warn out and past caring. The one who is suited professional and who you would expect to be speaking to only communicates with the
staff regulalry having heated discussions in the bar area during the evening but never enquiring our speaking to guests

I could go on but put simply do not go, you will find far better run at similar prices - providing what they say they will

we arrived late afternoon and check in was great. Reception was as people had said rather nice. Rooms where clean and the bathroom done the job. The rooms where cleaned every day and you had the choice of clean towels daily, or if you prefered to conserve the planet ,do not put them in the bath. Like many we were a little nervous based on 2006 reviews, so i would stick to reading only 2007. The food was plentiful and very nice to suit all palates. the local drinks were good as was the red wine. Although hotel animation team entertainment can get boring ,we found for one week ,at the end of the season they put all their best bits on ,and we found them highly amusing, as did our 16 and 11 year old daughters.Yes the beach is a dark colour but it is clean, the water is really shallow great for kids and the watersports were great fun too. Kayaks are free, and we snorkled in nice clear waters. The fact that the sand is a funny colour really won't bother you after the first visit you just get used to it and no it is not soil as some people think .The bus is 15mins to Kusadasi every 15 mins outside the gates . Overall the bad reviews I would take no notice staff change frequently as does the entertainment and there is also a quiet lounge area playing piano music if you just want to relax. There are a couple of shops in the lobby which are good to wander round after dinner.
Everyone we spoke to young and old were having a great time ,although in high season it must be manic as the theatre holds about 750 people.

  • Liked — Frendly staff and it was clean
  • Disliked — balcony was a small triangle and not big enough for us to enjoy really
