My girlfriends and I recently cruised through the Mediterranean and decided to book a tour of Ephesus for our day at the port of Kusadasi, and boy did we book the right tour! Our tour group had a total of 6 people plus our tour guide, Melissa. We met Melissa and the driver at the port entrance and were greeted by a very spacious and cool (temperature) van/mini bus. We hopped right on board and began our tour.
We started our trip with the House of Virgin Mary before entering into the ancient city of Ephesus. Ephesus was awesome to see, it was just amazing to see these ruins that were still present after thousands of years, and even the ruins that had fallen to see the underground piping system was cool to see the knowledge of structure and engineering they had even back then. Melissa was very knowledgable about the city and all the different buildings and did a great job of walking us through the city and painting us a picture of what it would have looked like in its prime time.
About halfway through the city of Ephesus, we stopped and took a tour of the Terrace Houses. This was quite a site to see, not only could you make out the walls and boundaries of each house and rooms, but some of the detailing was even still intacted. The painting on the walls, and the mosiac floorings! Couldn't believe how it was able to survive for so long, it was beautiful. At the very end of the city we stopped and saw the amphitheater, which has been used as recently as 2001 when Elton John played there. Now that is just cool. Melissa, let us play around in the amphitheater, put on a song and dance before we headed back to the van.
On our way to lunch we stopped at a pottery making shop and learned how to make the beautiful and decadent plates and pottery that is seen all throughout the country. After a brief stint here we head to lunch at a very authentic restaurant that felt like we were in a family kitchen. The food was DELICIOUS.
We ended the tour with St. John's Basillica and the sight of Atemission Temple, one of the 7th wonders of the anciet world.
This tour was by far my favorite on the trip. Not only were the sights cool to see, but Melissa was great. Young and energetic and very knowledgable about the sights and the town in general. Also, going through the private company wa cheaper and more comfortable than going through the cruise.
Highly recommend this tour and Melissa!
