“Side Star Resort / Club Side Star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2011

We booked this as a last minute deal via First Choice and were a little apprehensive as we couldnt find any reviews at all. The hotel is called Club Side Star but First Choice call it Side Star Resort. As there I no reviews I thought I would be as comprehensive as possible.

Check in
Arrived just before midnight to be met with a refreshing drink and a speedy check in. English good, free 15 minute massage and upgrade to family suite (However did think we booked this room anyhow!) We were directed to the bistro area which provided midnight snacks which were ideal as we had been out of the hours 12 hours. Nothing exciting but enough to make a sandwich and get a drink.

Family suite with seperate twin room for the children including flat screen TV (all channels in German/Turkish). Tiny wardrobe. Air con.
Double king size bed, flat screen TV and fridge filled with water. If you want anything else in the fridge you have to pay for this. Air con.
Small balcony, large clean bathroom. Overall really pleasing.

Pool Area
If you want a poolside seat, set your alarm for 6.30am - otherwise you wont get one. 7am and you will get a seat but not near the pool. Plenty of umbrellas. Not ideal but there are lots of Germans, Dutch and Russians at this hotel. We did what they did and put out the towells and went back to bed!
Pools, our children are 6 and 10 with the 6 year old being able to swim but not strongly. This is where this hotel falls down. There is a "postage stamp" kids pool for toddlers and then all the other pools are deep. There is no middle ground. The slides are great but you have varying degrees of supervision. Some let the kids go down on inflatables and crash into people at the bottom, others were very strict. The pool area is insufficiently tiled and every hour a child is slipping and banging their head as the floor is so slippy. Our kids loved the slides and spent all day on them, but as always you had to supervise them closely.

We have been AI numerous times and this was your standard fare.
Breakfast - pancakes, waffles, omlets, cereal, toast, hams and cheeses etc. No bacon (it is a muslim country) but plenty of choice.
Lunch - lots of salad and then grilled fish, chicken, chips, rice etc, desserts
Dinner - As lunch, but more choice including full sea bass, pasta and lots of desserts.

Snacks at the snack bar including burgers, chips etc. Afternoon tea including cakes, donuts, coffee etc. Pancakes made to order by the pool.

Drinks - local beer - fine. Wine - mmm not the best. Soft drinks were actual brands. Local spirits but we left them to the Slovaks and Russians!

Overall food fine and no complaints, nothing spectacular but show me an AI where it is. We tried to book into one of the 3 restaurants (Mexican, Asian, Turkish). You could only do this in the morning before 12 noon and it was 1 restaurant rotating the different nights with a small amount of tables. We could never get a table, however those that attended the asian night said it wasnt very good.

They do a Turkish night, one day a week which is nice but they place you outside and it was super hot.

Entertainment - dont bother! All geared up for German, Dutch and Russians. We attended one kids disco but the kids couldnt understand anything. Apparantly the team just mime to the songs on Grease night! That didnt spoil our holiday and we tended to sit in the pool bar.

Daytime Entertainment - Tuesday is the best day - They are off!! Not the best and focussed on competitions for men from Holland and in Germany in Speedos. Balancing on the canoe, throwing the ball....... yawn yawn yawn. Also the team played on rivalry between the countries. As there were only 23 First Choice guests on the whole resort the UK had very little representation!

Kids Clubs - didnt bother as per the above.

Location - beach lovely, but the surrounding area would be nice when its finnished! We only went off resort once so it wasnt a problem. Local town not very pretty!

Service / Staff - cannot fault. Rooms cleaned daily, waiters excellent.

Spa- used my 15 minute "free" massage and then had a further 15 minutes of hard sell. Was easy enough to say no, but prices dropped by 50%!

Hotel Shops - RIP OFF. Wont haggle and charge double what shops off site charge.

Overall - would we go back. I doubt it, it was extremely hot and the hotel was lovely and clean and air conditioned throughout. Food good, but the hotel is dominated by other Europeans so you do feel in the minority. Perfectly adequate for 1 week in the sun and a bit of relaxation when the Entertainment team were off or on their lunch!
