“Nice But Nothing Special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2008

The Kalkan Regency is a nice hotel with lovely views and good service.

However for the cost of the holiday we were expecting something better; especially compared with other holidays we had been on in places like Mexico and Egypt.

The room was very small and there seemed to be endless stairs in the hotel.

The food in the hotel was OK but nothing special and was very expensive for what it was. There are restaurants in the resort with much nicer food at half the price! One we would recommend is the Korsan Fish Terrace right next to the harbour.

Did not really understand why people go back there year after year; there are so many great places and hotels to visit in the world!

My partner had wanted to visit the Regency for some eight or nine years and this year after reading so many positive reviews we decided to give it a go.
Upon arrival late at night they had laid on a three course meal which was much appreciated, a positive start.
During the course of the week we found the quality of service to be sadly lacking, complaints to the tour rep were met initially with a confrontational attitude although her local manager bent over backwards to appease us afterwards offering a complimentary meal and we did receive an apology from the rep on the morning we were due to leave.
A visually pleasing hotel in a beautiful location with great views from the bar but not from our ground floor room unfortunately as we had trees just beyond our french doors and on the other side a derelict hotel a few yards from our door, together with the small rooms and a lot of steps between the different levels this also took the shine off somewhat.
We could not help but compare with the Asfiya where we have stayed before which has larger rooms, even better views as it is on a higher level, a larger pool area and much friendlier staff not to mention that it would have cost us about £800.00 less for the week.
Nice as the Regency is it is just not worth that premium in our book . A sentiment echoed by several other couples that we spoke to.
Sorry guys, close but no banana!

Dates 23rd August to 6th September 2008
They say you can't change your character, but you can change your behaviour. Not so at the Kalkan Regency which underwent a personality change in just 2 short weeks.
Week 1 was full and bursting, less than enough sun beds, favoured spots taken early ( 6.30am, by Brits!) overspill into a busy pool, no room to think or relax; Big Brother without the cameras or eviction (or so it seemed)
How else to describe the overnight transformation as we entered week 2. Every sunbed free, no towels reserving them- no need. Quiet and peaceful, contented time in the pool, could get to the small bar without queueing. Just how we had hoped it would be.
Yes the character changed, yes so did the behaviour, yes this is more what we wanted, NO this is not what you can expect.
The Regency is big on service, big on the friendliness of the owners and staff, big on its food and its views. It is also big on price.
It is small however on size, and when busy can be very claustrophobic.
So day 14 in the Big Brother house, we too were evicted and unlikely to return for another episode

  • Liked — The location of the hotel and the wonderful service
  • Disliked — Its small size, lack of space and ability to chill out if that is what you want to do

Exclusive Escapes provide a fantastic holiday at The Kalkan Regency. On arrival after midnight, the staff had provided a 3 course meal on the balcony overlooking the bay. Staff stayed up until the second flight arrived late at 4am to give them the same welcome. The spa, boat trips, rooms, pool and pool bar are all fantastic. The faultless service, well maintained hotel and the great setting of The Regency which has just given us a relaxing break. Book here you will not be disappointed.

Shiva- London

We had a 2 week stay at the Regency (3 generations of one family) In July/ August of this year and each one of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was one of my best holiday experiences and in no particular order, these are some of the reasons why:

The owners, the Tomanbay family, who are directly involved in running the establishment, treated each guest as a member of their family.

The staff were great, polite, friendly, and extremely attentive. Service is provided with attention to the minutest of details.

The Regency must have one of the best views in Kalkan, especially from the bar and the restaurant terrance, as well as the pool area.

The place is clean and spotless. The water in the pool is reguarly tested to ensure that it does not get infested with nasty germs. (I actually witnessed this twice during my two week stay).

The food is to die for- all products are organic , straight from the owner's farm.

I should mention the fantastic organisational skills of Exclusive Escape's staff. Their rep Vicky was wonderful- very helpful and accessible, organising the trips with great attention to detail.

This was certainly not a cheap holiday, but truly memorable, not least because of the remarkable gestures, from both the Regencey and Exclusive Escapes.

The Regency is like a magnet. It is the kind of a place people will come back to. (They have a wall where they measure and record children's heights so that on their next visit they can see how much they have grown. Needless to say there are records from individuals who have grown from 2ft to 6ft.)

Need I say more?

Suffice it to say "I'LL BE BACK!"

I would strongly recommend the following:

-The Wednesday night Barbecue at the Regency.
- visit to the Tomanbay Farm.
- The Gulet cruise
-Hiring out Regency's Motor cruiser, which comes complete with a skipper and a waiter. You sail around the surrounding bays, as well as goign as far as Kas and Kokova, the sunken city half of which can be seen under the clear water. Mrs Tomanbey had organised a wonderful surprise for us- a three course meal on the shores of a secluded bay. We docked at the bay to see a nicely laid table nad hilled white wine awiting us. This was followed by a delicious three course meal including freshly caught sea bream.
-A visit to the Saklikent Gorge. But do arrive early in the morning before it gets bsuy with tourists.

  • Liked — views, cleanliness, comfort, service
  • Disliked — rooms although adequate for two, will be spacially challenging when a child's bed is added.

There's little I can add to the rave reviews about this hotel except to say that the Regency is even better in real life.

The staff make the place - nothing is too much trouble. The setting is super, on top of a cliff overlooking Kalkan, with probably the best bar position in Turkey. An night, you're seeing ten thousand twinkling lights in the village while you enjoy the light breeze and something cold and wet.

The spa is great - again, nice people. The hammam is not to be missed if you haven't experienced one before and the massages so good that after I had one I booked a second.

Food is first rate - the salads taste like salads I had as a child, the meat is tender, the vegetables fresh from the earth. Wine is a bit pricey (about £18 for a bottle of something reasonable) but that's the case everywhere in Turkey.

Rooms - spotless, cool and with proper baths (the water is recycled). Public areas - also spotless and cleverly designed to make the most of breeze around the headland.

Pool - yup, it's spotless and really quite large (about 32 metres long). Lots of sun loungers and lots of shade.

Village - about a 10-minute walk down a hill. Literally hundreds of restaurants, many with terraces looking to the sea, so you won't be short of choice. There is very little hassle - it's primarily a British resort - but restaurateurs will try to entice you into their establishments, very politely.

We traveled with Exclusive Escapes, who were terrific. Great web site, knowledgeable staff at the end of a phone, very pleasant and Vicky, the local rep, is perfect - there when needed and a fund of good advice on local sites. No hard sell for trips, which means a lot of people go on them. EE has the confidence to be subtle.

OK, so I've repeated what everyone else has said. About 60 per cent of the people who were there when we went were repeat guests. We'll be among them next year.

  • Liked — Welcoming staff, fine food, great location
  • Disliked — A bit more sound proofing between floors would not go amiss but nothing like a deal-breaker

Now I know what all the other reviews were going on about. This is a really charming hotel: great position and food, lovely spa and pool and wonderful staff. They work incredibly hard but genuinely seem to enjoy it and have fun, which makes a huge difference to the guests. Do take advantage of the trip to the owners' farm and the mezze cookery class. Despite the temperature being in the 40s, we were never too hot at the Regency (excellent aircon and well-designed public spaces), I just can't think why it's not number one in Kalkan on the TripAdvisor list and am already planning a return trip when the weather will allow us to see more of the surrounding area.

Exclusive Escapes deserves a bouquet as well: the four-course meal when you arrive, the hammam session, the day on the gulet (complete with three-course lunch and as much wine as you dare to drink) and no hard sell from the rep, sorry, assistant. Do book a few dinners in advance – it saves money and the food is as good or better than the restaurants in town.

Oh, and prepay for the spa and other outings if you know what you want – there are hefty (four per cent) surcharges on credit card payments in Turkey and a two per cent charge even for debit cards. Or take lots of cash – pretty much everywhere accepts sterling and euros and you may get a better price.

Restaurants in Kalkan are surpisingly expensive: £50-£75 for two courses for two people and a bottle each of water and wine. The Olive Garden is good for simple, traditional food and great service. Coast has a fabulous terrace and view but food came suspiciously quickly and we noticed a bank of microwaves that may explain this. Aubergine gets raves from most people but we found it very average. Best meal in town was at the Girdonda, which has an amazing couryard for drinks.

  • Liked — Position, pool, food and above all teh staff.
  • Disliked — Sound-proofing in teh rooms could be better.
