“Lovely Hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2009

Just arrived back from the Grand Kaptan, having stayed there half board for a week. really enjoyed it although the hotel is a bit out of the way, and not much in the surrounding area to do. Night time entertainment in the hotel isn't advertised so you never know what is on (if anything) but I have read reviews that said there was entertainment. There are 3 bars just outside the hotel, The Blue Parrot is just over the road and in the next road to that is The Orange Grove and Adanus. We went to all 3 over the week, beware in the Blue Parrot went there twice and both times had to query the bill as we had been over charged-by quite a bit as well. The bar wasn't busy so makes you wonder if it was a genuine mistake, we didn't go back again. The food in the 'canteen' thats what it feels like was nice, although the meat the chefs cooked for our last evenings meal were burgers?? Not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel! The choice of other food was plentiful and tasty but as I said it does feel like your eating in a staff canteen so if your looking for a romantic meal you won't get it here. We never had any problems with the air conditioning it was on day and night, but we paid extra for a sea view don't know if that had something to do with it, although it should'nt. Agree totally with the previous review about the First Choice/Thomson planes very tight squeeze. Also beware what time they pick you up for your return journey we were picked up at 5.30 for a 10.40 flight, when we got to the airport realised they'd picked us up that early because they had people on an earlier flight too. We had to wait 40 mins for our bags to be checked in as the desk wasn't even open, and guess what not a Last Choice rep in site to complain. Alanya is a lovely place we ate out quite a few times and were'nt disappointed. Went up to the castle and got some spectacular pictures, and aching lesgs from the walk down! On the last day of our holdiay we found a small town called Oba by accident, looked like it was a really nice place in between Alanya and Tosmur were the Grand Kaptan is. Lot's of bars and shops here if you don't want to go into Alanya, it's about a 15 min walk from the hotel. But we did find it by chance so i would say to ask the rep for directions, it's very easy to find when you know how!
All in all a lovely holiday

We paid £260 each for this holiday so weren't expecting too much. We arrived and were treated to a private mini bus transfer with just four adults on board. The rep - Ufuk (how unfortunate) was a delight - very educated and helpful. Even after our midnight arrival the hotel provided a small buffet to fill the gap.
The food was excellent - lots of fresh veggies and salads as you would expect and a wonderful spice bar which no one else used!
We were half board but found that the drinks were inexpensive - but the choice of wine poor but that was solely down to our own dislike of turkish vino!
You must get out and about. The surrounding mountains are absolutely stunning - deserted - and although motorbikes are not recommended if you are just careful around the busy roads by the hotel you will soon get up into deserted roads and tracks.
The beach was disappointing - stoney and the sea rocky so a bit dangerous for families. If only the Turks would pick up the litter too!

Alanya is a fantastic town - a real turkish delight with loads of lovely restuarants to have a meze for lunch - we never paid more than £12 for two which included the biggest pitta breads we've ever seen (home made of course and on the spot) and loads of treats.

It's worth a day trip to Side - but this time would recommend taking the local bus as road very busy. It's very cheap - runs frequently and costs about £12 return for two adults. If you get the bus back to Mahatmalur they will even drop you off at the hotel. (if you ask!)

The Turks are fantastic, they love the Brits and want to help. Local beers are cheap (about £1.80 for a large one) but not much choice unless you like Efes.....

This was the best value for money holiday we've ever had and I would highly recommend.

Just a couple of gripes - First Choice plane a nightmare, with the least legroom ever experienced! Also as other guests have commented, the hotel need to sort out the availability of the air conditioning which only comes on at 10pm (at this time of year) as is centrally controlled. they didn't seem to care that it was unseasonally warm for the time of year - in the 30's every day.

And lastly, the hotel receptionist (older lady) is a real misery guts. Lots of people made this comment in the guest book....

Just got back one week ago from the Grand Kaptan Hotel - and we were very sorry to leave. We went to Alanya for a relaxing 2 week holiday and that is exactly what we got !
The hotel is exceptional and I cannot fault it. The food was very good - lots of choice and the staff were very polite and helpful.
We stayed most of the time sunbathing on the beach. There are plenty of loungers and parasols and the sea is wonderfully warm to swim in.
The air conditioning was a bit strange - some days it worked, others it didn't but we didn't let this spoil our holiday and were overall extremely happy with the whole holiday.
I would recommend to go all inclusive as drinks etc are quite expensive otherwise.
I have read some 'not so good' reviws about this hotel and to be honest ...don't understand what they are moaning about !!!
We're going back next year - that's how happy we were !!!

stayed at the grand kaptan for 1 week half board, the hotel was very clean and our room was large compared with other rooms we have had at other locations, it had a great view of the beach and sea,the only real problem was some of the reception staff were rude and offhand especialy if you had a small problem.shame for such a nice hotel.

We stayed at the Grand Kaptan from 25th Sept to 2nd Oct for 7 nights All Inclusive.
The hotel is a very nice, it's an ex-casino so is quiet grand when in the lobby.

The rooms - Probably the bext we've ever stayed in, had a room over looking the pool. Didn't find the road outside too noisey, but there is another main road on the other side of the hotel so that may be more noisey. Very clean and in good condition. Only problem we had was there was no A/C. We were told the generator was broken at our welcome meeting, but after asking over the next few days at reception we were told it was working, then we were told it only works at night!!!! It turns out it comes on at about 10pm, they said it stayed on til 6am, but at about 3 or 4am we were waking up because we were so hot. We have an 8 month old so her sleep was broken as the rooms are so hot & stuffy. We later asked a maintenance person about the A/C & he told us that it was too cold for the A/C to be on during the day!! It seems the staff dictate when it comes on, we were not happy as this is supposed to a 4* (Turkish 5*) hotel and we paid expecting A/C. It may well work all the time in the summer, but it was still hitting 35 degrees everyday so it made the rooms very hot. The First Choice Brochure states it's centrally controlled, so you cannot adjust the temp once it's on, only the on and off switch work.

Food - Excellent, always plenty to eat and lots of choice, no reason to go hungry at all. Dinner service finishes at 9pm, probably a little early really.
Drinks - If you're All Inclusive then drinks are available at all times, there's a pool bar with beer, spirits & soft drinks. A roof top bar & the lobby bar.

Entertainment - Every other night they have something on the roof top stage, (we saw a magic show, a turkish band & turkish dancers). There are 4 guys in the entertainment team, but they don't really seem to do much, they hang around the pool all day just chatting to people and play a darts match once a day. We spoke to one guy who told us they are struggling as there used to be more of them & now they can't do alot of the things they used to, also the hotel is mostly full with people over 50 who don't want to get up and plays games. If you have kids that like entertainment they may well be dissapointed. Alot of the things advertised never happened.

Amenities - The 2 pools are very nice, but quite cold & a bit of a shock at first. the hotel provides beach towls. There is another pool over a bridge to a closed hotel with water slides, but we never used it . The beach is accessed through a tunnel from the hotel, there a hotel bar & restaurant for guests, the beach is stoney and the sea is quiet rocky, we didn't use it at we didn't find it that nice. There are some nicer beaches in Alanya town.
The hotel is about 4km from Alanya town centre, the hotel runs a free bus every hour to and from the town, there are also 2 other buses that go into the town from the main road, one takes you to Cleopatra Beach & the other into the town. You can visit the Bazaar or go upto the castle (don't walk, it's a long, long way!!) but the views are beautiful.

Staff - Found most to be very friendly, they do seem to favour the Germans for some reason (don't know why as most are so rude). But we probably only experinced preference once or twice.

Any questions feel free to email me.

We (My partner, daughter and I) have just returned from a 2 week holiday to the Grand Kaptan.
We arrived just after midnight and were greeted by the rep, check in was quick and we were told that we would be able to get something to eat and then taken to our room...We were on the 2nd floor with a room facing the main road...Not a great view but once the balcony door was shut, you could hardly hear the noise from the busy main road.

ROOMS....... These were large, with TV, fridge, Mini bar, tea & coffee making facilities & plenty of wardrobe space... However the bathroom was small and the bed was rather on the hard side. The maids came in every day to tidy and changed towels and bed linen when needed. The mini bar was re-stocked daily with beer, water and soft drinks, sometimes they even left chocolate bars or crisps (snacks dried up on our 2nd week).

LOCATION.....Although the First Choice brochure stated that the hotel was in Alanya It is NOT...It is in Tossmur which is quite away from the main town of Alanya....Although the hotel provides a free bus into town it did not make up for the hotels location...The main road is at the front and the busy coast road is at the back of the hotel...Apart from the Blue Parrot just outside the hotel and the Orange Grove just round the corner you have a good 10 min walk to find another bar or restaurant.

FOOD...... Breakfasts were really good....There was always fresh fruit, pancakes, omelettes, danish pastries, breads, cheeses and a "Turkish version" of "A full English"!!!!.. Lunch and dinner......There was always plenty of choice but it did become rather repetative and even for fish eating veggies like myself the choice was not great..
There were also 2 al a carte restaurants (1 fish and 1 italian) which you can upgrade to. Both of which are good but not brilliant

STAFF & SERVICE....... On the whole the staff were ok but not over friendly, however they do love children......This I found a little difficult...... My daughter has very blond hair and got a lot of attention......I have no problems with this but when you spend 50 weeks in the UK telling your kids not to talk to strangers etc!!! It is quite hard trying to tell them that this is ok!!!...... The best member of staff was "Ali Bar man"...He was always on duty at the roof top bar and would often forget to charge us for the odd "Irish coffee" or "Kiddie Cocktail" which were chargeable even on A/I..

ENTERTAINMENT........This has to be the worst entertainment I have ever had on any holiday........First Choice brochure clearly stated that the hotel had a pool with 3 waterslides...However it failed to tell us that the waterslides were only open at certain times and to reach this pool you would have to negotiate a large number of steps by way of a bridge to get to them...There was also no lifeguard on duty so when the slides were open older children and teenagers were just messing around on them( climbing up them and coming down on lilos etc) This made it very unsafe for the younger children to enjoy themselves.......It also stated that there was a kids mini club...This had closed at least a month previous to our stay .......The all day entertainment that was mentioned in the brochure was also non existant!!! Evening entertainment was just as bad...In the two weeks we were there, there was only 3 shows worth watching (A magician, some jugglers and a Turkish Night) all of which lasted no more than 30 mins.....Other evenings, there was little or no entertainment apart from "rip off bingo" at 30 lira a strip or a couple of dodgy singers.

SUMMARY........A nice hotel that is let down by its location and lack of entertainment...Ok for independent adults BUT not for famillies with young children.
