Me and my boyfriend have just returned from our stay at Sofitel yesterday. After reading all other reviews I did not have a high expectation of the hotel or resort but was still willing to have a good time. Let me start by saying that we had a great time and truly relaxing holiday.
My first view of Sofitel was Wow. Really looks amazing. We walk in and the reception and bar area is truly impressive. The same can be said about the room. Spacious and big and comfortable. The bathroom was impressive with a tub and a walk in shower. There is however no tea or coffee making facilities and the hair dryer was hard to use - it kept turning off!! Lots of cupboard space for your clothes. TV was big enough to see from the bed. I have to say I loved our room. The pool and beach are clean. The hotel provides sun beds and towels.
I am a vegetarian and let me say that the food in the hotel was delicious. Breakfast and lunch was good. The waiters went out of their way to help me and made sure I was happy with the food. This might sound silly but I didn't like the tea bags - Lipton? So if you're like me take some of your favourite teabags. We only ate dinner at the hotel on our first night and I thought it was too expensive especially for a vegetarian. But I think if you're not a vegetarian you will like it. We went to different restaurants around the area. When you leave the hotel turn right. We went to a restaurant called the Les Baron des chefs (it’s part of Mehari Hotel - which is the hotel next door) the food was the best we had eaten in Yasmine. Walk further down and there is a local supermarket to get cheaper drinks and water. There is also another restaurant called Bella Marina which is Hammamet, you have to get a taxi but it’s worth it.
The night time entertainment in the hotel is a bit boring, pianist. Only on a Tuesday night do you get to see traditional Tunisian dance show - which was very good.
The only thing that was bad about this hotel was the reception staff. They were very unhelpful and you almost feel like they look down on you. I felt ridiculous asking them how to get a taxi to the medina in Hammamet. The receptionist looked at me as if I was stupid and said you just go outside and get any that pass by. She didn’t offer to order us one. On one occasion we went to collect our pool towels from the reception and before we could even make a request she sent me to the other desk. The lady at the other desk told me I need to go the other desk that I had just come from. She accompanied me to the desk and the other lady said ‘oh I thought you wanted to check out.’ The night before we were going to leave the hotel we asked reception if there was any airport transfer service. The reception said ‘no’ you have to take a taxi. She called up the taxi firm and told us she had booked the taxi and he would pick us up at 2pm from the foyer. She did not write down the firm or tell us if we would have to reconfirm. The next day we went to check out and asked the reception (different from the night before) if he could confirm our taxi. He asked who you booked with. We explained that the receptionist the night before had booked it for us and we don’t have any details. He said he is sure that the taxi will come. As we were going to the pool a man approached us. He didn’t speak a lot of English but somehow explained he was part of the airport transfer service that is part of the hotel. In the end we went with the airport transfer as we gave us a better price and we knew he was guaranteed to take us there.
Overall we only had small amount of contact with the reception staff and truly would recommend this hotel and would definately return back to it.
