Stayed at the Riu Marco Polo, Hammamet Yasmine 20th April to 4th May 2011, having got a good deal with First Choice. We have been taking holidays in Tunisia for years, mainly because you can guarantee great sunny weather in Spring, well this year it let us down!!! for the first week the sun never shone!! Overcast/Windy/Rain, terrible weather for Tunisia, some people who only went for a week never saw the SUN!! The second week was much better so we did come home with a tan!!
We found everything about the hotel to be really good, everywhere, public rooms/pools/gardens/rooms were kept immaculately clean and the staff never stopped cleaning from morning til night. The hotel was completely renovated in 2009 so everything is modern, marble and tiles.
Our room on the top (4th)floor was really spacious, cleaned every day and fresh towels, comfortable, wide twin beds, a sofa bed, large flat screen TV, small fridge with free bottled water, nice bathroom with shower over the bath, (this could be awkward if you have mobility problems) We always had hot water at anytime of day and everything worked! We had a nice private balcony overlooking the pool/beach and marina, we just could not fault it, a great room. There is Air/con and a fan but to early in the season to be on. It was cool at night so not needed.
The TV had some 30 channels, mainly French and German, only 2 are English language, the dire BBC World News and a CNN Business channel. Although we did watched the Royal wedding on BBC World news in our room as it was raining all that morning!!
The manager of the hotel is Daniel from Madrid and his Assistant is Mohammed from Tunis, both speak excellent English, I have never known any hotel managers as enthusiastic as these two, from morning til night they attended every meal asking guests if everything was OK even checking the freshness of the bread and if they were not happy its in the bin and the head Chef is out explaining why!! They really kept on top of everything and there is no doubt that due to their efforts the hotel is really well run. They were always happy to spent time speaking and advising guests which was really appreciated and made the hotel so relaxed and friendly.
Without exception we found all the staff to be friendly and happy to serve us, as the hotel was less than half full there was no waiting or queuing for anything, it may be different in high season. There is a main bar open all day, a Pool bar when the sun shines!! with a waiter to bring your drinks to your sunbed!! and an evening bar in the entertainments room. The beer and wine were very good help yourself in the dining room, the spirits are weak, but all very drinkable!
We thought all the food was excellent, so much variety at every meal, probably the best range of food we have ever found in any hotel and we have been to lot's, we both put on weight as it was all delicious, always hot and tasty. There is a full English breakfast served every morning, but no HP sauce, so bring your own sachets!!
The breakfast coffee is excellent really strong, served in a thermos flask brought to your table so you can help yourself, there is a full range of Herbal Teas on offer but for a Breakfast 'cuppa' you have to make a Pot of tea using loose leaves and a strainer, this does confuse younger people, we had to laugh one morning when we had to explain to a 31 year old lady ( yes, you know who you are!!) how to make a pot of tea as she admitted she only knew how to use tea bags and had never seen it made with loose tea. So if you want 'real' tea in the morning bring your own bags.
There was a speciality restaurant which does an Asian night on Monday's, which is basically a full range of Chinese food, great 'Spare Ribs' it really was as good as you would get in a Chinese anywhere over here and a Tunisian Night on a Wenesday, nice if you like that kind of food and Cous-Cous.
The main pool is huge and freezing with lots of sun beds around it with pads and you get a free towel per person which you can change every day at reception. There is also a nice indoor pool which is much warmer and was a godsent for those families with children when the weather was bad, also a well equiped Gym and a Spa room next to it.
The Animation team work really hard throughout the day keeping those people who like to play games around the pool happy, in the evening they put on shows, which are mainly miming to songs or doing mime sketches which are really dated, they could do with some new idea's.
Due the exceptional bad weather, we never used the beach, as one night the sea came right over it within yards of the hotel grounds and when it went it left seaweed and flotsom and jetsom all over it, they were still cleaning it with a JCB and workmen when we left, hopefully it will be fully functioning for summer, but it was not very inviting when we were there.
The Hotel is in a good location right next to the Marina and close to the shops in the town, everything was in walking distance.
We would not hesitate to go back to this hotel and we would recommend it to all our friend, it was really hard to fault, I'd like to go back just to see if Daniel and Mohammed are as enthusiastic about hotel management after they have had a busy summer season, but I would like to say to both of them thanks for all the laughs we had and the time you made for us, it made our holiday, we wish you well for the future and we hope to see you again!!
