“A little shabby but great value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Acqua Viva is a great hotel for those who are looking for clean lodging at a good price, and intend to spend their time outside of the hotel. I was there for 4 nights and was very happy with my booking. A clean room with air conditioning, a bathroom, and a small balcony (though the view is of a rundown parking lot) and breakfast for far less than the other large hotels in Gammarth (Ramada, Regency, etc). There is a nice looking pool, though the water slides don't work anymore, and free wifi in the lobby (pretty, though a little dim).

As for location, it is certainly not walkable to anything but the beach (maybe the new mall "Gammarth Center" which is about a 25 minute walk up the road). Taxis are the rule of thumb, though that's really the case everywhere around there. There are usually several in front of the hotel who will try to quote high prices for every destination instead of using their meters. But you can either hold your ground and wait for one to cave, or just walk out to the main road where you will find one driving by. It's between 7 and 12 dinars to go from the hotel to La Marsa, Sidi Bou Said or Carthage. Most of the taxis I took back to the hotel knew it by name. They will almost definitely know the Ramada by name and you can just direct them a bit further down the road once you pass it.

This hotel would be great for students or those who don't mind things a bit shabby and are on a budget. The breakfast was mediocre, some of the bathroom appliances were aged, and not many of the employees spoke English, but everything was clean. Mostly Tunisians, some Italians and French in the hotel. My friend and I are both young women, but we felt safe. If you are looking for a resort vacation, look elsewhere and pay more. But if you want reliable budget lodgings, Acqua Viva fits the bill.

I have just returned from an excellent stay at Hotel Acqua Viva. The hotel staff were very helpful, chatty, and many were fluent in basic English which was useful (we spoke only limited French.) The room was basic, but adequate. The hotel facilities were good: an outdoor pool, water slide (unsure if operational), indoor pool, and bar/social room with pool table.
The buffet breakfast was extremely good and there was sufficient variety. Pastries, cereal, bread rolls, sweet bread, salad etc. The evening buffet meal was also good. Guests are able to choose: meats, fish, salad, soup, several veg. dishes, and a selection of desserts-e.g. fruit, shortbreads.
The only major drawback of Hotel Acqua Viva is its location. It is very remote so taxis are required when journeying into La Marsa/Tunis. Taxis park up outside the hotel throughout the day. However, they do not use their meters, so you will get ripped off! If you require a taxi, it is much better to flag one down by the bus station on the main road, as these will generally switch on their metres.
Overall, a fantastic hotel.

This hotel was very good value with friendly and helpful staff. The food in the restaurant was a good price and with enough variety to please me my wife and my 5 year old daughter. When we stayed there it was too cold to use the outdoor pool but there was an indoor pool and I enjoyed the treatment room. The room was clean and although slightly out of town we enjoyed how peaceful it was and found it a useful base to explore the towns along the coast. People who are looking for a fancy hotel can find plenty of them on the coast but if you just want a pleasant base where you can meet a variety of people this is perfect for the job.

Basically, I do not understood what this hotel can be used for. It is located in the middle of nowhere. To visit anything you need a taxi (easily found near the hotel for inflated price). We stayed in the hotel just 1 night before our flight back home. For this purpose the hotel is acceptable, otherwise I would not recommend it. Taxi from the airport costs 10 dinars (take a passing taxi on the departure level - second floor). Taxi back to the airport costed us 15 dinars.
When we arrived and went to the swimming pool we were shocked (actually this hotel deserves a visit just to have this experience): we saw about 50-100 Arab people staying in the pool! They were staying because there was no space for them to swim or at least to stretch out legs and arms. And they were not hotel guests (it was a Sunday and they were allowed to the pool for separate price - 15 dinars).
Buffet dinner is cheap and Ok. Breakfast is good.
Beach is near, but is not very clean and the water is not clear.
Room was dirty, no TV, no balcony. Everything that can virtually leak was leaking. The bathtub is very dirty and does not allow for a water to drain out easily. Air conditioner is weak.
The main clientele are (old) French people.

This is a simple, honest hotel: the food is varied and local. The service is average to good.Rooms are cleaned regularly. The pool is clean and ideal in the Summer months. The clean, breezy beach is easily accessible and worth a long stroll-one lovely French-style beach restaurant was worth the effort. The distance from the airport makes for an expensive taxi ride, but local bus service and link with the local train and tram service is much cheaper ,if you're not in a rush.Close to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said-not to be missed, worth a local taxi-driver as your guide! Tunis-busy,but friendly and safe.Try the trains and the louages! Visit the Bardo Museum! What a refreshing change after the noise and chaos of Cairo...where I live!

Room Tip: Plenty of choice but check out whether a large tour-group is in...Remember this is a budget hotel.

Booked this hotel after reading the reviews and info on the hotel. Wish we had gone somewhere else. Even though the website states shops and restaraunts nearby theres nothing apart from 5 star hotels. The animation team is annoying and you have to listen to loud awful music all day and night, not the relaxing pool side I had imagined. Staff were rude and unhelpful, a small amount of money disappeared from our room, the reception thought there was no problem and just shrugged it off claiming not to understand! Safe to say I will never go there again and the whole experience ruined my holiday.
