My family and I arrived in time for lunch on December 31st. The reception at the airport, the transfer to the hotel and check-in was seamless. We had reserved two rooms side by each at the Les Quatres Seasons section of this hotel complex and there were no surprises on arrival.
Our rooms were available but not yet made up. No bother, we left our locked bags in the rooms as housekeeping was in one of them already, briefly oriented ourselves and then headed to the restaurant.
The entire week was one of gastronomic pleasure! There was always a large selection of fresh, cold salads and fruits and numerous, varied hot dishes to choose from. Despite having lived in France the past six years, I can tell you quite honestly that Tunisians bake wonderful breads. I must note, however, that breakfast here is not up to the standards of many of the resorts we've been to on either side of the Atlantic. There are plenty of fresh oranges but strangely enough you cannot get fresh squeezed orange juice at the hotel. All the juices taste as though they are made from crystals. If you like a heavy, sausage, bacon and fried egg breakfasts or pancakes, this is not the place for you. Cereals, yogurts, fruit, pastries, sliced meats and cheeses, breads, jams and a modest selection of spicy sausage and scrambled egg is what we found every morning, without variation. The reservation-only, free a-la-carte restaurants were very good and copious. We chose the seafood restaurant and the Italian. There was never a shortage of seafood, one of the most delicious being the "show cooking" grilled calamari--incredibly tender. But be patient, this show cooking was done on a rather small scale. The pizzas at the pool-side restaurant were surprisingly good as well. The ability to change venues and service for meals was much appreciated when you are on an all inclusive.
The hotel and staff pulled out all the stops for New Year's Eve. A lovely box of Tunisian confections was left in each room along with the agenda and menu for the evening. The dining room was beautifully decorated and transformed for the occasion. The evening began with an hors d'oeuvres cocktail reception and magic show, a 3-piece band played during the delicious, 6-course gourmet meal (we literally were able to cut our filet mignon steak with bread knives), which was served with efficiency considering the number of guests and dishes, everyone received a bag of party favours, hats and masks for the big moment. There were belly dancers although there was more taking photos of them with guests for later purchase than there was actual performing but they are professionally taken and make reasonable, nice souvenirs. And finally there was a party in the bar that ran until 2:30 a.m. from what I understand that culminated with traditional stomach-settling onion soup
There is a large animation team that work very hard without being intrusive to involve and amuse the guests with diversions. Their evening shows were diverse and entertaining.
The hotel itself is quite large but not unmanageable with direct access to the beach. The rooms were cleaned promptly each morning with housekeeping decorating the firm beds with your sleepwear, towels and bougainvillea petals. The adequate sized rooms have balconies, TVs and mini fridges that serve no real purpose other than to keep cold drinking water at hand, which the hotel provides. It is a beautifully landscaped and maintained hotel and it has four pools including a small, sheltered heated one. There is a small games room and a gym. And of course you can pay as you go at the adjoining spa.
I found one of the treatments to be less expensive if booked in advance: the hammam + gommage + enveloppement aux algues, and the Decoverte package is less expensive if booked in advance than the ½ journee Detente is on site. There is also a balneotherapie Relax Center a short walk from the hotel that charges a fraction of the 4 Seasons’ spa treatments. Unfortunately, I discovered it too late to make the comparison for facilities and quality.
I think booking excursions on site in many cases appear to cost less than in the brochure and you pay in Dinars rather than in Euros. My son really appreciated the mini club excursion to Djerba Explore, a large crocodile park, for only 11 dinars.
I would recommend stopping in to the tourist office in Houmt Souk early on in the visit if you want information about what to do besides the excursions offered at the hotel. It’s a short, inexpensive taxi ride (15 minutes, and costs between 5 and 6 dinars or between 3.25 E and 3.90 E). There are no brochures, maps or other information provided at the hotel other than the posted group tours.
In short, this is a very well kept, well managed hotel and is deserving of it’s three stars in every category. We got a lot more quality for the rating than what we expected and it was absolutely correct for the money.
This hotel is exclusively managed by FRAM tours and 98 percent of the guests are French. Italian and German are spoken by many of the staff but English is not a strong point. The animation team always asked in advance if there were non French people in the audiences and would translate introductions accordingly but the shows were in French.
