“Value for money”

We stayed here for the last two weeks in September and the weather was unseasonably hot.
The Hotel states in the brochures that the air con is turned off on the 15th of September thank goodness that this was kept on in the bedroom as it would have very uncomfortable. Unfortunatly the Hotel did turn the air con off around the bar area which forced everybody to look for seats outside at night. These were in short supply and mainly occupied by the smokers. I think that the managment need to review this policy and keep the Hotel as comfortable for the guests way beyond the September date.
The quality of the Hotel and the problems regarding Sunbeds have already been well documented by other reviewers and it would be nice to see somebody from Iberostar to comment on their staff saving Sunbeds as it is the policy of the Hotel that reserving sunbeds is not allowed.
We did not have any problems with any of the staff here, but some have liitle understanding of English but don`t let this put anybody off from using this Hotel. If you use manners and common sense and treat the staff with respect (also the odd tip here & there always helps) you should have no issues at all.
It took two trys asking at the reception to get a light bulb changed in the room but we got there in the end and it was not a big issue.
A few people have previously mentioned in previous reviews about the larger barman who did not treat the English with the same service as other nationalities. No problems here as a tip smoothed the way and it`s seems his English is limited but he understands the value of a good tip. This worked a treat as drinks appeared very quickly and with a smile !!
The only other issue regarding our holiday was getting there and back we booked via Thomas Cook and I think they have cut a few corners using Nouvelair instead of their own Planes. We only had a 30 minute delay going out which was made up. The airline is a basic no frills service which you do not expect from a company like Thomas Cook. Enough people have previously commented about this issue and It would be nice to travel on an airline where basic safety instructions and procedures were adhered too.
On the whole the holiday was value for money and having travelled to Djerba wouldn`t rush back but would`nt put anyone off from going there either.

My sister and I have just returned from our second visit this year, and it didn't disappoint. Firstly, Nouvelair, I know when we went in May I gave it a mixed review. Well they have obviously listened to feedback and acted on it. A bigger aircraft type going out so better legroom and there was a duty free service (mind you I bought the one and only carton of B & H, very cheap though £18) so you are probably best buying at the airport as they only stock up in Djerba. The cabin crew were great, very friendly and informative. When we landed the captain came on to give us the temp outside, 33 deg! Fantastic.

We decided to get a taxi to the hotel, its only 10 euro each way so we were at hotel for half past midnight.

The weather the whole week was amazing, in the high thirties.

The hotel still has its family of cats and the kittens we fed back in May now have kittens of their own. So there are four adorable tabby kittens and their mum and dad. The hotel do look after them as they keep the mouse population at bay. We fed them everymorning and a lot the Germans also fed them, so please,please if anyone is going out in next few weeks can they feed them too.

In fact the only cruelty towards them that we witnessed was from an English man who leapt out of his chair and threw a book at one of the kittens, totally uncalled for. In fact it was quite surprising after he seemed to have no problem with mobility at the hotel to then see him with wheelchair assistance and medical seats on the flight home! It must have been the vigorous throwing of the book the injured him!!

The animation team are wonderful, you can participate as much or, in the case of me and my sister, as little as you want. We were know as "The Lazy Women"!

People seem to get up very early to reserve sunbeds which should not be allowed unless they are used from first thing. We were down by 7.30am and used them all day but there were plenty that weren't.

The staff (apart from one waiter who obviously did not appreciate us feeding the cats and called us something unpleasant in Arabic) were wonderful. They work so hard and always have a smile for you. A special thank you to Zidane.

The food was very varied and high quality, how anyone can say its repetitive is beyond me.

The Thomas Cook rep, Marilyn is brilliant, so knowledgable, she has lived and worked in Tunisia for the past 30 or so years. I work in travel and know what a difference it can make to your holiday to have a good rep, we look forward to seeing you next year Marilyn. I have recommended this hotel to so many of my customers and in fact 3 of them stayed there same time as me last week.

The manager Sahbi left to go to another hotel while were there so as long as the new manager is as good it will continue to not disappoint.

Yes there were other nationalities there, which was lovely and there was no noticable favouritism, like I said in my last review for this hotel treat others the way you would wish to be treated.

We were very sad to leave yesterday and will be returning for the third time next May.

A beautiful hotel in a beautiful location with excellent staff and facilities, what more could you want.

Room Tip: Pay the small supplement for seaview ans ask for room 8205, its well worth it

We have recently returned from a 2 week stay and have to say it was almost faultless. We had looked on Tripadvisor for reviews before going and had some concerns about the lack of friendliness from the staff towards the English but what we found generally couldn’t have been further from the truth. Apart from one minor problem with a receptionist, who must have just been having a bad day as another time she was fantastic, and with FiFi needing to be a little friendlier, we found all of the staff to be friendly and extremely hard-working. It must be a challenge to have to be all things to all people when there are 4 main nationalities to communicate with, entertain and look after and I think a sterling job was done. We had some minor problems with our room and whenever reported they were dealt with immediately and I think special thanks should be made to the room maids who did a fantastic job and were extremely conscientious and thorough. Also to the maintenance man (don’t know his name, grey hair and a moustache), he was adorable.
Our major problem was with the sun-beds around the pool. There are clear signs advising they are not to be reserved and yet the only way to guarantee having one was to be up with the lark every day. Fortunately I was happy to do that and was there before six each morning. It became clear that the problem did not lie with people reserving beds and then not using them till later in the day but with the pool attendant named Adel, who has a lucrative side line with primarily the French and German tourists. It was clear he was placing a considerable number of towels on beds on their behalf and was being tipped on the quiet for this. I observed this every day, watching him meet with them in the indoor pool area and then when they had placed their own towels he would return his stash to the trolley in the indoor pool. His “special “ guests” also seemed to know where to return the towels to if he wasn’t around. He was even prepared to get into an argument with other guests who had removed towels he had placed so as they could have some shade for their young child, and with another guest who had a disabled husband who needed shade and had done the same thing.
I appreciate that all staff are “tipped” and this is acceptable but only when they are offering a positive service to individuals and not when their actions affect other guests and their comfort, enjoyment and well-being.
Overall though, I would recommend a stay at this hotel to anyone. And there is also plenty to take advantage of in and around the hotel and day trips and activities are affordable and good for all the family.

I'll start by saying we wasn't impressed with Nouvelair on the flight out to Djerba- beware of the 'all white' plane they use - for us it was very uncomfortable and service on that flight was quite poor! However on the flight back- this was a totally different story- we had a really nice plane with nice comfy seats, a bit more legroom and the service from the cabin crew was so much better.

When we arrived at The Iberostar Mahari after waiting an hour and half for our luggage at the Djerba airport - We were dealt with very quickly and efficiently by the reception staff. We were shown to our room, which was on the ground floor - being two woman on a girl's holiday,we were apprenhensive that the lock on the patio door didn't seem very strong so when we mentioned it to the reception staff - they were more than happy to move us to another room - thank you.

We found ALL of the staff very helpful, polite and always gave us a smile- even the large barman!!

The hotel throughout, our room and the outside areas were always clean - The maids and gardeners work very hard.

The Restaurant and food was really good- lots of freshly prepared foods and some cooked in front of you. Desserts were amazing!! Im a fussy vegetarian - but I always found something I could eat. The waiters and chefs always made you feel welcome and work really hard too. Thanks guys.

The animation team were brilliant - Always Jolly and always made us laugh - I will never forget the Marahi club dance they do - love it! They were quite thoughful of the people who just wanted to relax and not get in involved, we never felt pressured to join in if we didn't want to. These guys create such a good atmosphere and want to say a Big thank you to them too.

A couple of suggestions to management - as mentioned in previous review/s -

* I do think another plug point in the room would be helpful.

* The small plastic cups you are served drinks in during the day are way too small - a tip for future guests - take your own decent sized plastic cup - they are happy to fill it up!

*Air conditioning or fans in the hotel bar and lounge area please- we did want to sit in there a couple of nights but it was just way too hot!

Another tip is to always remember to pack your electric adaptors -We were told by our rep that they do not sell them over there and a few people had forgotten to pack theirs - so we helped them out with one of our spare ones but its worth remembering!

If you get a chance ,the quad biking trip that the guy sells outside the restaurant was brilliant, same goes for the boat trip to flamingo island on the pirate ship - that's a great day out and the crocodile farm is defo worth a visit. Taxis to there was only 3 diner so very cheap indeed!

We had a sunset photo shoot on the beach which the photographer in the hotels runs - he takes some really good shots and would defo recommend.

The pool is lovely by the way and Yes- the sunbeds are reserved like most of the places you go on holiday - however on 2 of our days we got up at 8.30 and still managed to get a bed - so not always a massive issue!

The beach is lovely and not too far from the hotel - but unfortunately there was a storm the week before we got there and it brought tons of seaweed in - They had started clearing this all away- and the part that they had was OK to swim in.

All in All - This was one of the best places and hotels I have been to - I will definetely be returning.

Returned on 23/9/2012 after spending 14 nights here. The hotel was fantastic, food was great, we were in a party of 4 and none of us suffered any stomach ailments whatsoever.
I agree with many of the other comments made in earlier reviews, however found that a small tip to the large barman gained his attention and we received very good service "with a smile" each time the tip was placed on the plate situated on the bar. (1 dinar tip is only 40p!!)
Entertainment team were good and they did try hard for the most part although Fifi made it obvious that she could not converse very well in English so tended to go to the French/Germans more.

The whole scenario with the sunbed availability was a major dissappointment for us, luckily one of our party was an early riser and she was down at the pool for 0600hrs most mornings, on one occassion she counted 50 beds already "booked" via the towel on bed system and this led us to pay more attention to what was happening. We quickly worked out that the pool attendant (the one with the white top) was reserving the beds when he started his duties for "favoured" people (these were not English!), he had his own stock of towels and was receiving "tips" for placing these on required beds. (For the managements information these towels are stored on the trolley to the left of the entrance into the indoor pool and he can be seen collecting his towels from the beds once they have been occupied by the "paying customers" and returning them to his "stash"). We did complain to Marilyn the Thomas Cook rep about this practice but she seemed unwilling to want to get involved? So if you are considering going to this hotel then be aware that it needs an early start to get any beds in poolside locations with shade.
The only other complaint we had was that the a la carte restaurant was a bit of a let down. The food was not very warm and looked like it had been taken from the buffet, nothing special about it at all.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it is just unfortunate that it was let down by one member of the staff who was putting personal greed before any other consideration, because we found all of the other staff very attentive and friendly including the waiters in the restaurant.

We would recommend this Hotel to anyone who is considering it as a place to stay, but would welcome a response from the management re the sunbed situation?

Arrival at hotel - reception.
Arrived at 1am. Good quick polite service. Bottle of water and a cold meal on arrival.

Light and airy, spacious, good size balcony. Bathroom a good size but shower not the best it needs a better wall bracket. Hairdryer in bathroom. Only 2 sockets in room, 1 used for tv could do with more. Continental quilts on bed. (that's a first). Block 7 is a quiet area. Room always cleaned very well.
Safe in room £20 for 2 weeks
Fridge £42 for 2 weeks
Extra card for room £5.
TV some English channels plus football channels.

Large indoor and outdoor pools.
Clean. There are plenty of sun beds BUT NOT ENOUGH PARASOLS.
Many of the sun beds seem to be pre booked. Towels on beds at 6am in morning.

About a 5 minute walk needs more beds and parasols.

Clean sauna very hot reasonably priced. Not the best massage just ok.

Not enough tables or waiter staff. Layout could be better.
Food excellent plenty of it and good variety.
Chefs all excellent and always with a smile.
Waiters not very good - probably because not enough staff.
SNACKS not a lot of variety.
Better to wait a while as it's like a cattle Market when opens both at lunch and dinner.

ANIMATION - they all work very hard. Some make more effort than others.

Beach bar - Entertainment on there in the evenings until mid September open till 1am.
Pool bar - serves hot and cold drinks
Lounge bar - open till midnight.

Three shops but a bit expensive.
Also an outdoor Market once a week in hotel.

HAIRDRESSER - A bit expensive.


All reception staff very good
All the cleaners, gardeners very polite
Waiters in restaurant could be better.
Glass collectors in bars excellent.


Moncep the bar manager and Ali the big fat one that previous reviewers have complained about was as bad as mentioned.

Masrouki Sahbi. - he is out and about at all times of the day and very approachable. If you have a problem go and see him and get it sorted. Better to clear the air as soon as possible.

THOMAS COOK REP - Marilyn an excellent rep with many years of experience met her a few times. VERY HELPFUL.


Mideoun - taxi approx 3 1/2 to 4 dinars each way
Crocodile park - taxi 2 dinars each way. A good half day out for 12 dinars each available from TC rep.

If going on an early start excursion book an early morning call that way the hotel will know to open the restaurant early for an early breakfast.

FInally - if travelling with Nouvalle airline take euros for drinks and snacks as then you get a better rate. There exchange rate is £1 = 1 euro.


Room Tip: 7000 and 6000 block in a quite area.

We stayed at the mehari for 2 weeks! The rooms were cleaned everyday and the beds where comfy! The food was nice, there was enough for everyone. Service was good and staff where very friendly, if there was a problem it was sorted straight away. Animation staff where excellent! Lots to do during the day but the night entertainment wasn't that good, could be better. One night there was a beach party that was fantastic! The beach was clean and sea was so warm it's like a bath. I would advise you to take your own glasses. Overall this was an amazing holiday and would like to return!
