I am currently sitting by the pool in my last couple of hours before we leave the resort for Bangkok and thought i would write the review.
This holiday was purchased as part of a coupon deal and while many people have reservations about buying such deals, don't be this is our 2nd to thailand in 8months and each time we have enjoyed both the resorts, location and atmosphere from these deals. While we have come at the low season the weather was very kind to us and we had perfect weather for the full 8 days of our stay. June 10th - June 18th. However just days earlier a moonsoon had devastated many of the businesses along the beach, so they where not open.
The Sunwing Bangtao Beach offers everything you could possibly want and you would never have to leave the resort for any reason. While this resort primarily caters for families it is still a perfect location for couples looking to get away and relax. The food, service, rooms and facilites are excellent for all holiday makers of all kinds, however i just can't go past the fact that children under 12 years old eat for FREE, now that's a great deal in any language.
The 4 pools offer a relaxed environment to just laze away the day with some cocktails and beers and a swim every so often to cool down.
The breakfast was also a buffet style but had more then enough options including Thai style meals, i think i had the Pad See Wee with Chicken and my G/F had Chicken Pad Thai about 10 times each over our stay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plenty of excellent choices at La Tasca.
We also took advantage of the Spa facilities as they had a buy 1 get 1 free offer. $5600 Baht ($150 AUD) for over 4 hours of treatment is value for money.
Local attractions - As we did not have any kids with us to take advantage of the meal deal, we ventured into Bang Tao for food and a wander around and found some amazing places to eat. Our favourite was the Andamen Seafood restaurant, to get there for lunch simply head to the beach turn left and walk along the sand until you reach the restaurant which is just past the last resort, look for the thatched umbrella's along the water. Excellent food and very cheap. 6 beers and 6 meals (entree size) later $1000 baht ($30 AUD). If going at night you will need to catch a Tuk Tuk $100 baht ($3 AUD) out the front of the hotel or take the 25min walk to the restaurant as the tide will be in and you will not be able to walk along the beach. Follow the signs and don't be afraid to head down the alley to the restaurant. Also for excellent food just head out the front doors and walk across the road to Sugar Cane this place is also amazing and one we wished we had discovered earlier. Also excellent food and portions sizes are normal. Try the Garlic and Pepper Squid you will not regret it.
Along the beach to your right (100M) is a little bar called Chill Bar, look for the Bob Marley flag on the top of the place, nice and cheap for an afternoon relaxing as you watch the sunset from your beach chair.
Taxis into Patong from the front of the hotel is $600baht ($18 AUD) one way. However if you book both ways they will wait for you up to 4 hours maybe more if you ask. 30min ride.
Overall this place is perfect and cheap with outside restaurants and bars being slightly cheaper but no by much so really unless you like to change your scenary every so often you can stay at the resort.
One warning though is if you do venture into Bang Tao do not accept any scratchy cards from locals or expats offering you an instant prize, i guarantee 100% you will win a great prize, while you will not get yourself into trouble by listening to the sales pitch (90min) from some expats salemen offering you fantastic holidays for 25years (timeshare) it will waste your time. PPL are the guys offering this one. Look under scams Thailand for more info. Just be aware.
Excellent Resort for all holiday makers, would go back for sure!
