When I travel, I like to find places to dine that are unique, high in quality, and come with a sense of 'community' already established. It's not enough to be 'slick' -- you need to make your foreign clients feel WELCOME -- and Spoonful was the first place to achieve all of this in Rawai. It's a perfect central location, but unlike most other Thai cafes and eateries it is a lovely converted house (not a typical concrete box) set off the road a little in a shady jungle canopy. As soon as you arrive, you see all of the unique touches: rope swing, huge balcony, hand-painted signs, and lots of wood and glass.
But it is the PEOPLE and the FOOD that make 'Spoonful' shine. Owner Ploy is also the chef, and she's a smiling whirlwind who creates a delicious variety of cakes and confections for any dessert lover. (the 'Banoffee Pie' - a banana coffee fusion - is one of my favs). Meanwhile, her friendly staff make an extensive menu of hot, iced, and blended coffee drinks infused with high-quality beans from Northern Thailand, and often topped with real whipped cream!
In closing, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place to anyone visiting for the first time (and reminding those who are thinking of returning) -- you'll feel like you found your little oasis island in a sea of Thai craziness, and your tastebuds will thank you for it.
