This is the second time we have been to The 9th Floor and as before we were pretty impressed.
After the initial 'weirdness' of getting to it via a relatively scruffy part of Patong down a backstreet and up a very uninviting elevator (although we both agreed this was a huge improvement on the last time we came which was about 6 years ago) the doors open to reveal a posh restaurant with stylish decor and pretty Thai waitresses there to welcome us and attend to our needs.
Our table was right by the window as we had requested, and the black table finery and set-up was professional, with comfortable highbavled chairs.
The view over Patong from the restaurant is amazing, and the windows are all sliding glass doors that open fully so that there is empty space above waist height. This gives you uninterrupted views and you can hear the nightlife below, plus it gives the place a gentle breeze. We absolutely love this feature of the restaurant. Brilliant!
The food was very nice, and we had the crab meat and BBQ prawns starters which absolutely did not disappoint in the slightest. Excellent presentation and good sized portions.
For main we had the 500g of chateaubriand and WOW - perfectly cooked and the meat just melted in the mouth. It was served with some vegetables which had the right level of crunch to go with the succulent steak. Yum yum.
We were pretty full at this stage so we just finished off with cocktails and Baileys Coffee and wobbled out to a taxi very satisfied...
The service was amazing and incredibly attentive - possibly too attentive - but then I remembered that when I had booked and asked for a window seat they did say we had a two-hour window for our food as they had someone else booked into our seat at 9:30. We finished at about 9:10 so it all worked out well...
The pretty waitresses were all young and stylishly dressed in sexy, short black dresses, and they were all very professional. They always smiled to us and even had a photo taken with someone from another table with lots of laughs and smiles - great! There were also a lot of them - I think we counted about 12 at one point, so we never had to wait long for anything!
It is VERY hard to criticise this place.
Prices aren't cheap, but then that's what you expect at a restaurant of this quality, and the food is as good as any top, global restaurant. The owner was also in there chatting to guests which is a great touch.
The ONLY criticism I have is a common one for Thailand and concerns the spirits. I ordered a glass of Heering sherry last off, and when I swirled the drink to smell the aroma it was like smelling meths. I've drunk port and sherry for years and I have never smelt anything like this... I didn't complain as I'm sure any 'tampering' would be denied, and it did taste OK, but boy did it smell like a glass of methanol... Hey ho. It may just be the sherry, which is a brand that I have never tasted before.
Either way, we would definitely go back to The 9th Floor for a wonderful experience - maybe next time I just won't have a sherry... :-)
