5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

I stayed at Expat from December 22-29, 2011. I can safely say that given the price range, it is one of the best hotels I have stayed at. Let me mention below the pros and cons of the hotel.

Pros:
1) Great great location. You can easily walk to the beach, not to mention the markets, the malls and all the various parlors. And it is not on the main road, but down the street at around 1 minutes walk. So this means that the hotel is at a very convenient location, minus the high noise levels of the main road!

2) There is a great big bar with a cool atmosphere and a nice English bar manager. There is Satellite TV there as well, with all kinds of sports including Rugby.

3) The hotel has a swimming pool with a beautiful poolside area, where you can relax.

4) The rooms are clean, with air-conditioning, a mini-bar and clean toilets with hot water.

5) The owner is an English guy by the name of Paul who is married to a lovely Thai woman, Gim. They are both extremely friendly. Also the reservations manager, Aung, is a really nice, hospitable fellow. All of these people make sure that any complaint one might have is immediately rectified.

Cons:
1) The food at the hotel restaurant, though reasonable, is nothing special. Perhaps, that’s not a major gripe because all kinds of restaurants, Thai, Indian-Pakistani, Italian etc are at a maximum 2-3 minutes walk away.

To conclude, I would say that Expat is definitely the place to go. I look forward to returning next year. Great comfort at the right price!

Room Tip: Choose the deluxe rooms with a balcony

Furniture is rather old, rooms are dark and not cosy/ Water in the pool is milk. The hotel has a bar, and at night you could not sleep through noise. The prise is too high for conditions of this kind.
The Expat is good hotel for those who came to partying on Bangla and have sex with Thai "ladies of the night", but not for couples.

Room 115 was good & clean, had AC & ceiling fan, mini bar fridge, hot water showers & TV and a very large bed for reasons you should already know. This place caters for the genteel gentlemen mainly but has a nice pool, reasonable restaurant and a pretty good open air sportsbar. Service was good but not great, staff were pretty friendly but without a lot of enthusiasm. The location is why I chose this place and it is quiet but only a very short stroll to the action of Bangla Road.

Room Tip: Ground floor around the pool is nice

Just returned from my 3rd. visit to the Expat in 3 years and this place just keeps improving. The latest renovation is a new bar in the resturant area, this turned out to be a bonus with Rugby being played at the same time as the AFL finals, thats Australian rules. The accomadation is still good and very comfortable, great crowd in the bar any night, the laundry, massage facilities the best and the reception girls very helpful in all a great spot to stay.Expect to see lots of new girlfriends in all areas, these girls are great too and sometimes more interesting than their new boyfriends.......J.P.
