“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

We have just come back from a 10 day stay at the Sunset Beach Resort Phuket. For a 3 star hotel, we were impressed. Big rooms. We were fortunate to have a room on the ground floor opposite the pool. What a plus! Comfortable beds, spacious room, adequate bathroom. Clean. For value for money this is a wonderful place to stay. I was reluctant at first as it is further away from town however the free shuttle service was available. We nicknamed the driver "Mr Happy" as he is not the friendliest, however, when ever i asked him to drop me off at places along the route other than his normal stop offs, he was accommodating. Tuk Tuk's at 200Baht a trip made the late night trips easy. This is my 3rd trip to Patong and really enjoyed our stay. We will certainly be back. Breakfast's were pretty average, though we were satisfied. For cheaper meals, the hawkers on the side of the road opposite the hotel offered great cheap foods. We ate there often. The meals at the hotel are well priced. The laundromat down the side street was wonderful, the Tailor there was great too getting me 3 pairs of work pants and 3 shirts ready within 36 hours. Thank you to all staff at the Sunset Beach for making our stay so enjoyable. Ann and John Boehler

Room Tip: The pool views are great as you are away from the hussle and bussle of the main road.

Depending on what you're going for you will either like this hotel or hate it. It's got an OK location just outside the busy Patong Beach area which is about a 20 minute walk, but there is a free shuttle truck that takes you there and back every 30 minutes until 9pm. That said the beach across the road out front is very rocky so if you want sand you have to walk about 10-15 minutes or take the shuttle. The hotel itself is very clean and nice. It comes with a free breakfast that was hot and satisfying for a free breakfast. We had a room on the second floor facing the pool which was a beautiful area to relax and swim. The relaxing depends on the number of kids which there were a lot of during our stay. The wifi is not worth the $. We paid about $20 for 4 days and it is super slow. Right next door is a high speed Internet cafe. Use it. Also laundry at the hotel is expensive and next door combined with the Internet place is laundry for about 50 Baht for 1kg. The staff is friendly but their English is minimal. Right in the lobby the tour lady was helpful in getting us info and booking a ferry to Koh Lanta where my buddy and I are now and highly recommend.

Room Tip: All rooms had A/C and a fridge. If you want guaranteed silence don't get one facing the pool, al...

The one time I booked through an agent - onlinetravel.com, I was disappointed. The website says airport transfers included but were not. Beware the airport shared vans - cheap and horrendous - they pick up everywhere and cram you in with no airconditioning and get stuck in traffic jams meaning you have panic attacks thinking about missing the flight and not getting enough air to breathe for the hour long trip. For your own sake and health, get a limo if you can - the one I tried to engage said the airport mafia would not allow it! Go figure! The room was made out to be "special" as it was "superior" and "seaview" in the ads. The photos on the web are misleading. Beware. This hotel is smack bang on the main road and the traffic is extremely noisy all day and all night. It looks like a hotel out of the main Pathong action and it is, but not away from traffic and noise. The room smelt of mildew ( a legacy of the tsunami maybe apparently over 100,000 tourists perished in seaside hotels and we were told otherwise) , was dark and dirty and looked not at the sea but at a filthy black bundle of power lines. I immediately went down and complained and was offered for 1,000 bht more per night, a Junior Suite. TAKE IT. This was the solution but only at a cost which brought the 6 nights we stayed there in line with new, luxurious hotels elsewhere. The ocean front is not accessible for swimming as there is a main road and rocks. Further down, you can pay for a lazyboy chair but with the roar of traffic overhead and fumes up your nostrils and the bay of Pathong can't be clean! Swim at own risk I say! The hotel pool was crowded with all sorts of people who can't afford better. There was standing room only with kids and think about the pool! Breakfast was the same everyday, boring and more boring. I did like the fact that there was on tap fruit with papaya.
The nightly meals there were better than the Novotel down the road or the chic restaurant up the road opposite the IndoChine. The change was good - check out the views from the restaurant on top of the cliff at Kalimaa - in fact stay at both those hotels rather than this one - Novotel is gorgeous in a traditional Thai way and Kalimaa is new trendy luxury for not much more than the dreaded Sunset. I managed to escape daily by getting a tuktuk to Kamala Beach and then one back at the end of the day, using the Kalima Beach resort as a base for food and drinks - fabulous actually for location - one part called the Sunprime for adults only and the other Sunwing for families and kids. Both cheaper than the Sunset because of paying the middle persons - the on-line agent. Won't do that again! The room was cleaned until three days into our stay and they stopped cleaning. I complained! Water was supposedly free for two bottles and was not left the first day. We were accused of having drunk it already rather than they forgot to leave it. I complained! That's three complaints and who wants to go on holidays to complain? The public areas are dirty and look like they haven't been cleaned in months. The lift and stairs going up to the fifth floor to our "suite" had not been cleaned in what might be years. The swimming pool change area was filthy and slippery and looked as if it only gets cleaned once a day. At Kamala, people are in attendance all day to clean up public areas and hose down walkways etc. Judging from the numerous tour groups booked into Sunset Beach Hotel, they can afford cleaning!

Room Tip: Definitely go for the suite or if wanting to economise stay away from the "beachfront" win...

A great value for money 3.5 star hotel. If you are after 5 start this isn't for you. The free shuttle to Bangle Rd is great, or 200 baht by Tuk Tuk. Reception staff are friendly, the porters are attentive, and the staff at breakfast are great. The buffet breakfast is an ideal way to start the day and will suit most tastes. The pool is huge and you can always find a sun lounge in the shade. The hotel is located a few Kim's north of Patong and is very quiet in the pool view rooms. The small stalls selling dinner across the road are fantastic value for money. I'd recommend the Sunset to you all. Again, great value for money.

The rooms are big with nice living space too. The pool is excellent for children as well as adults. The staff are generally helpful and friendly. It's not a luxurious place but its great value for their price. Location is a short ride to the busier areas. Food nearby tends to stop early but there are a few decent local places to eat including the hotel.

Thailand is the land of smile but the staff there (receptionist to waitress) is so rude, and unfriendly. the only person who smile is the guy who make our room everyday. Bed linen is torn, holes and stain on it. breakfast is so bad - juice is warm, fried egg often got shelve in it. internet is sooooooo expensive n often drop out. we stay there for 7days and is got blackout 2 times. all the staff there seem so lazy, they normally stand around watch tv or play with their mobile. don't even try to greet guest. spa in the swimming pool only turn on from 2pm-4pm so ridiculous.

Room Tip: stay away from this hotel is the best option

We stayed at Sunset Beach Resort in December of 2012 for 9 nights and loved it. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially those at the bar and restaurant. We ended up eating at the restaurant most nights as the food was awesome and just as cheap as most those in/close to Bangla Road. We liked how it was situated at the northern end of Patong and just slightly out of the craziness. The rooms were slightly basic (which was all we were looking for) but were always clean and tidy. Those wanting to party and be in the thick of the nightlife may not like the location, as it took us about 15min to walk in toward Bangla Road.
I would stay again!
