“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2009

We spent two weeks in Phuket for Christmas and loved the Banthai. We have previously stayed at Impiana Cabana(once), Patong Merlin(twice) and Club Andaman Beach Resort (three times) and thought the Banthai far better than any of these. Check-in was simple and friendly. We had a deluxe pool room which is a few steps to the pool. My parents, children and friends had superior rooms (second, third and fourth floors). Rooms were exactly the same however deluxe has a verandah instead of a balcony, a flat screen tv on wall with free internet access and much nicer towels. This hotel has three wings each with its own pool. Pool A is private and quiet as is Pool C. Pool B however isn't as private as people have to walk through the middle of it to get to Pool C. We were in Wing C and tried to walk the long way around if possible. We never had trouble finding a lounge. The room is reasonably modern (by Thai standards) with a huge king size bed and a day bed. Bathroom vanity (sink and drawers) is outside the bathroom which is great. One person can be using bathroom while the other is doing hair/make-up. Unusual but we liked it. Bathroom was a bit daggy looking - needed new tiling but the water pressure was great and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was amazing - honestly if you couldn't find something to eat here there would be something wrong with you. The egg chef could speak 8 languages and remembered how you liked your eggs. They even had great coffee machines. The Breakfast room was lovely too - plently of room for everyone and you could sit inside or outside. Some mornings we went to breakfast at 8.30am and got kicked out at 10.45 (it was so nice sitting around with family/friends). We NEVER eat at hotels (other than breakfast) but decided to eat at the Port restaurant at front of hotel on Christmas night (for convenience) and didn' t like it. The music was too loud, food was too expensive and service was slow. I only found three minor faults 1. the chairs outside the deluxe rooms are very uncomfortable and if you lean back the back of it moves and pushes against the sliding door so noone can go in/out of room unless you sit up and pull the cushion out of the way. 2. the front desk staff struggle with English at times. Once they understand what you want they are very quick and efficient but getting the message across sometimes took a bit of effort. This didn't bother me too much as we are in THEIR country. 3. I found the pool too cold. It didn't bother the blokes but none of the women would get in as it was too cold. Like I said - these faults were minor and didn't detract from our holiday at all. Like other reviewers have said, the location of this hotel is fantastic - right in the middle of everything but peaceful once you're inside. Its also a bit more modern than a lot of Thai hotel rooms. This hotel is lovely, the staff very friendly and helpful (especially housekeeping and pool staff) and I definitely recommend it.

My friend and I stayed here after going through hundreds of reviews on hotels in Thailand. Being American and studying in Japan, we had no idea which hotels were good, poor, or could possibly be in terrible locations. This hotel was a true gem! The staff was so nice and we had welcome drinks and sat in a lounge while we waited for our paperwork and room to be ready. The room, bar and pool bar prices were all SO reasonable! The room was large, clean and even had little orchids on the beds. We overlooked one of the pool areas. Let me tell you-- the pool was the best part of the experience. There are two identical pools on each side of the hotel and awesome waterfalls, etc. The swim-up pool bar is gorgeous with foliage all above it. Drink specials were cheap and the pool food was great too. We didn't want to leave! Location was superb, as we were just a half-block from the beach in Patong. They also helped us coordinate elephant-back riding trips, shows, etc. which were all fabulous. Be cautious of the vendors on the main beach strip, as well as the "red light" area..can be a bit dodgy!

Definitely recommend this hotel!

My wife booked this for us as a 6 night Christmas Break after a particularly stressful year. We did have some reservations after reading some of the reviews on Tripadvisor but thought that the overall ratings were positive and so took the plunge.

Our trip did not start as smoothly as we had hoped when the prebooked Hotel car was not at the airport to collect us. We called the hotel and immediately were put through to a very apologetic Manager who said that the car cominbg to collect us had been in an accident and asked if we could take a taxi that the hotel would then pay for. (We had the same exerience on a previous visit to Phuket with another hotel and I am beginning to think that "had an accident" is code for "Oh crap ! we forgot you !").

There is no shortage of "taxis" as Phuket airport and so 45 mins later we arrived at the hotel, and true to their word the hotel took care of the driver's fee.
The hotel is situated on the beach road in Patong but is set back from the road and so is a bit of an Oasis from the madness that can be Bangla Road at night.

We were then met by the Manager, Usa, who was again very apologetic and took us to a cool room, gave us damp towels and a rather sweet drink, checked us in, quickly and efficiently and gave us various coupons for restaurants, spa and drinks.

The room was fine, a ground floor room that opened onto the poolside, as we had requested, nicely furnished, clean and with a complimentary bottle of wine. There was a nice, large, flat screen TV and a mini-bar. The bed was comfortable and the AC was quiet and worked well.
It was evening time so we walked out to a nearby restaurant to get something to eat and then retired for the night.

The next morning my wife realized that other hotel guests were able to take sunbeds and put them right outside our room to sunbathe and use the pool which was a liitle uncomfortable for us, so she called the Manager.
Again Usa arrived and took care of us. She upgraded us to a Pool Access room, actually the room next door to us, without extra cost and arranged a member of staff to move us. In 10 minutes we were relocated and happy with our new room.

Overall we found the staff helpfull and polite, the room was always cleaned while we were out getting breakfast and a Starbucks coffee (right next to the hotel).

Breakfast was great, served in a building close to the hotel, with lots of selection and the Chef was able to remember our preferences for eggs or an omlette even after the first day !

The hotel location is excellent for restaurants and the beach. It's close, but not too close to the many bars and clubs of Patong and there was always a line of Tuk Tuks outside if we decided to go anywhere outside Patong too.

There is a small gym but there is only one treadmill in it and so there was usually a bit of a wait if you wanted to run. Also the AC was not always turned up enough unless you asked so working out was ridiculously hot and sweaty business. (I don't know if this is a general thing in Asia, my gym in Shanghai turns the heat on in the Winter !)

There is a restaurant attached to the hotel that we did not use as there is a live band there nightly and we found the music too loud for us at dinner. There was also a Christmas Eve buffet and show arranged but we thought that the price was a bit too high (BHT 4200 each !). It may have been good value but not for us I'm afraid.

On our last evening we were invited to a cocktal Party for selected guests by Usa. She was very concerned that we had a positive experience overall after the problem with the taxi on our arrival. The party was lovely, with drinks and really nice food (Sushi, Yakitori, Tempura, etc.) and a chance to discuss with people who had been visiting the hotel for many years. Inviting us was a very nice thing for Usa to do and showed that she took responsibility for our holiday experience quite personally.

On the morning of our checkout there were some things that had to be checked and amended on our bill (laundry that should have been included) but that was handled quickly and without a problem. The hotel had also arranged a car to return us to the Airport.

Overall we had a very positive experience staying at The Banthai and would happily recommend the hotel to friends.
The cost was quite high but then again we did stay in a very nice room and it was high season (Christmas) so we expected that. We did get free internet, although we were unable to get it working most of the time, mainly due to our technical incompetence. Breakfast and 4 pieces of laundry per day were also included in the price. The latter was very much appreciated as my wife used the gym on most days and so was able to get her gym clothes cleaned.

A big contributor to our positive experience was the Manager, Usa, who took personal responsibility to make sure that any concerns we had were addressed quickly and that any inconvenience caused by the non appearance of the taxi did not impact our overall opinion of the hotel. Great attitude !

My family of 5 and friends also a family of 5 stayed at the Banthai from the 10th of Dec till the 20th of Dec 08. It was the best holiday we have every had, from the resort to the staff and the cleaning staff were so sweet, no matter how many times you walked by or past them, there was always a smile and a greeting, they are so sweet. The pool was great , the rooms were great and clean and so was the bathroom. The breakfasts were to die for, absolutely everything that you can think of to eat. The chef was fantastic. Kai one of the staff there was amazing, the kids and us loved his kind and helpful nature. The position of the resort was the best, close to everything. Every day the room was cleaned and every night the bed was turned down and lovely little flowers were left on each side of the bed, it was so lovely.
We would definitely go back, in fact we were so sad to leave Banthai and Phuket, we have been depressed back in Australia since we arrived back. We are coming back next year though,Yippee!!!!! Many thanks to Banthai and all staff
Regards, Kerrie Ekers and Families

The Ban Thai was fantastic. We were caught up in the Bangkok airport closure so werent sure if we would ever make it there. The hotel is in a perfect position, smack bang in the middle of Patong Beach but once you enter the resort you would not know. You do not hear the day to day traffic and the only noise we heard at night was fireworks on the beach and the band playing in the restuarant. The rooms were very pleasant, clean bathroom. I was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews on the Ban Thai but I can only praise the resort. The staff at the front desk were very helpful even though it was a little hard to understand at times. The pool staff in particular a lovely man called Kai were fantastic. Nothing was a problem. I would recommend this place to people over 30. It is not for the young ones who want to party all night. You can go up the road for that. We travelled in a party of 10 (2 families) and cannot fault the resort at all. Ban Thai is directly across the road from the beach and you have the markets right next door. There is also a chemist on the premises which also carry general grocery items that you might need. Very handy indeed. There are three sections to the Ban Thai - we stayed in the one that had the rock water feature. The kids loved that.

After reading many reviews I was a little hesitant about going to the BanThai but it seemed to have everything we wanted.
Checking in was reasonably smooth, however we were not given interconnecting rooms as requested and in actual fact the rooms were quite a distance apart from eachother. We were eventually placed in interconnecting rooms after four days !! This is not a good thing for a family with children.
There was definitely mould in the bathrooms and they never felt clean. There were also some unusual bugs in the bed, so the first thing we did was go out and buy some insect spray.
The rooms were on the smaller side, but quite functional with a little balcony that overlooked the pool.
The staff were reasonably pleasant but there was no exceptional service.
Location was quite good and within walking distance to good shopping venues and eateries.
It was quite noisy at night as there is a band that plays nearby into the early hours of the morning, and fireworks were continually let off on the beach.
Breakfast was good and there was a huge variety to choose from.
Patong Beach is lovely and it is a fun place to stay, however next time I would prefer to stay somewhere that was truly representative of the beautiful Thai people.
I believe the BanThai would have been something in its day, however it is definitely in need of an upgrade.
I would not choose to stay there again, as it is quite expensive for what it is, and there are so many other exceptional resorts available.
Staying at the BanThai did not make my holiday special.

I stayed one night at the Banthai in November and had a very pleasant experience. After reading some of the poorer reviews, I was slightly concerned, but fortunately, that proved to be an non-issue.

Check-in was fast and friendly, even though I arrived around 1 pm, when they are very busy. I had booked a pool access room at a great rate through their website and the room was perfectly fine. For Thai standards, it was a bit sparse, with no desk and rather plain decorations, but the 'private" pool was a nice feature, and everything was clean and worked well. They even provided beach slippers and a beach bag for towels, etc.

The beach is literally across the street, and all of Patong is within walking distance. Right outside of the hotel are tons of restaurants, bars, and a Watson's drugstore for cheap bottled water, sodas, snacks and suntan lotion.

I enjoyed my one-night stay at the Banthai and fortunately didn't experience any of the problems mentioned by other Tripadvisor reviewers. I would recommend the Banthai to anyone who wants a party-atmosphere type hotel right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Patong. If you are looking for something more relaxed and quiet, try the Amari Coral Resort just up the street. Also a great hotel.

As far as the city of Patong is concerned, it's ugly, slightly seedy and full of middle-aged, intoxicated and sun-burned European and Australian tourists. And you can't really walk more than a few steps without someone offering you an erotic massage, a tailored suit or some cheesy fake souvenir. If you have kids, Patong probably isn't the best choice for a family vacation.
