“Expected more from a 5 star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

We were disappointed with our overall experience at the Avista Hideaway Resort and Spa in Phuket. The resort itself is very pretty and sits on gorgeous grounds. The rooms are also nice, clean, and spacious. Our complaints deal more with the service of the hotel. Here is a list of some areas from improvement and areas that we feel that other customers should be aware of:

1) Location and lack of shuttle availability-- The hotel is situated high above Patong on a hill. There is really nothing within walking distance, so if you are hungry or want to grab a drink, your only option is to go down the hill or eat at the hotel. In order to get down, you have to either a) take a taxi (which will cost you double what it should cost you due to the taxi mafia or b) use the hotel's shuttle service. The problem with the shuttle service is that they only have 1 shuttle bus for the entire hotel and the availability is limited to every 2 hours or so. In addition, you have to request this service well in advance. The 7:00 PM slot seemed to always be full and so then you have to wait until the 9:00 PM slot, which is usually too late for dinner for most of us. They have a shuttle that seats about 14 people to provide transportation for an entire hotel... makes no sense.

We felt "stuck" many times because we had called to late to request the 7:00 PM drop off and then had to wait until 9:00 PM.

2) The hotel creates expectations and then does not fulfill them. Upon check in, they provided us with a questionnaire regarding our preference for pillow style, tea flavors, mattress preference, etc. We excitedly filled out the questionnaire expecting that we would have our favorite tea in the room and special pillows, only to find that everything was what a standard hotel room would have and none of our preferences had been implemented. In addition, the questionnaire asked if we were celebrating any special occasion, which we were (it was our 4th wedding anniversary). We thought that this was a nice gesture and expected that they would be doing something to help us celebrate, but nothing came. For this, it is better to not provide the questionnaire, so that there are no false expectations.

3) Not enough pool towels. We were in need of pool towels to go to their offsite private beach (which is one of the nicer things about the hotel) only to find that they did not have any pool towels available, as they were all being cleaned. After waiting about 45 minutes to get towels, they brought us wet towels that smelled like mildew. Needless to say, we did not use them and felt that in a hotel of this type, towels should always be available.

4) No take away breakfast box on day of departure. Our room rate included daily breakfast. On our last day, we had to check out early (30 minutes before breakfast was to begin) due to having to catch a flight. As we met with our driver and some other guests, we were informed that it is customary for some hotels to provide their guests with a take away box of some breakfast items on the day of check out, if they are unable to make the breakfast. The other guests that rode to the airport with us had their take away boxes that their hotel had provided. Mind you, they stayed at a much more affordable and less luxurious hotel than we did. We were sad that we did not get to enjoy the daily breakfast that day and were not even informed of a take away breakfast option.

All in all the hotel is very nice in terms of looks. One can truly go there to relax but what makes it difficult to relax and enjoy the beauty of the hotel is the faulty customer service. Being a more luxurious hotel, customer service should be top notch. Primarily providing options for the guests to experience a hassle free vacation. We will probably not be returning to this hotel and will pick another hotel option upon our return to Patong.

Dear NixC79,

Greetings from Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa.

Many thanks for your recent feedback, we are glad you found the rooms at the Resort comfortable and are sorry to hear the service was not as you expected. We do take all guest feedback very seriously and I would like to address some of your comments.

1). Regarding our location we do promote ourselves as a Hideaway destination and do try to explain we are situated on a mountain overlooking Patong. We are within 3 KM from the heart of the Patong and it takes approx 2 minutes by vehicle to reach the main entertainment area. We are located in the middle of a Jungle environment and this does mean there is not much to do in the immediate vicinity of the Resort, however this is exactly why most people choose to stay with us. We do have bars and restaurant at the Resort however, if you do want to explore other options then yes the only choice is to head into the main Patong area.

We do operate a free shuttle service which can get very busy at peak times however if the bus is full we do try and arrange complimentary alternative transport. To overcome this issue we have already placed an order for 2 more coaches that will transport more number of guests. Local taxis are also available outside the Resort and the standard price from the Hotel to Patong is 250 baht. Coming back the normal charge is about 300 baht however some may charge 200 Baht depending on how busy they are. The local taxis have set the prices for all cars which, unfortunately, we have no control over.

2). On the form we do have several options for both the Pillows and Tea / Coffee and the items you indicated are our standard items which are always in the rooms. The range of pillows we offer vary from Duck Down to Memory Foam and if guests do prefer these then the pillows are changed however if a standard pillow is required then these are already placed in the room. I do apologise if the form was not clear enough and we will certainly look at ways to improve.

I am truly sorry if you Anniversary was missed as we do like to celebrate with our Guests, especially on such a wonderful event. Our normal practice would be to send an Anniversary cake and Champagne or other gesture however when we investigated based on your comments we realised that there was no mention of it on the form. If however, this was mentioned to one of our associates and not actioned then I sincerely apologise that we missed out this very special occasion.

3). We do keep towels by the pools for all guests and the higher category rooms also have towels available in the rooms. I am sorry it took so long to get your Beach towels as we will certainly look at improving this. We always have towels available for Guests and keep a large stock of spares to ensure all guests can be catered for.

4). We do provide a takeaway breakfast box however this is based on request. On checkout we do not automatically send a take away box as Guests are still entitled to the full buffet breakfast and the majority will attend the Restaurant which opens at 6:30 a.m. If a guests does request a takeaway box then we provide a full range of A La Carte options or our staff will gather your required selection from the Buffet.

I do hope these issues did not prevent you from enjoying the beauty of our Resort and can assure you we will look at ways to improve all areas which you mentioned.

We thank you for sharing your experience and do hope you will choose to visit us again to see the improvements.

Warm Regards,

Avista Management

We recently had the good fortune to stumble over this gem of a hotel when my wife booked a special deal through Agoda. Right from the moment we arrived we knew that it would be a fantastic week - there had been an issue with our booking (our mistake, not theirs) and the staff immediately rectified the error and found us a family room adjacent to the upper pool which allowed us and our two girls to enter straight into the pool from our poolside balcony which was great.

The hotel had only been open about 7 months and parts of it were still being finished while we were there! Overall, the whole week was superb - the staff were fantastically helpful (thanks in particular to Bryan at reception, Mintra and Krisada in the rooftop bar and Lorie and Thanasorn in the restaurant) - we did the cookery class as a family which was great fun and many thanks go out to Alongkorn for all his patience. Thanks also to Headchef Tim and his team - especially for our final night's private dining experience which was second to none.

It was a great base to explore the island and from here we went to the newly opened Tiger Kingdom, Kata beach (great for families), big Buddha and the night markets in Phuket town - all good trips.

We are delighted you enjoyed your recent stay with us and we managed to meet all your expectations. Our family rooms are extremely popular and we are glad you, your wife and the girls enjoyed staying next to the pool.

Bryan, Mintra and Krisada thank you for your recognition and we have passed on all your comments to the team. Chef Tim, Alongkorn and the other kitchen staff are also happy that you enjoyed the cooking class and hope you will be able to pass on the recipe for some truly authentic Thai dishes.

Nice pools, nice lobby.

Rooms were nicely-designed and spacious.
Hairdryer could be much better.

Awesome breakfast, especially the pastry/bread section. Most guests tend to show up after 10am and it gets very busy, and this overwhelms the staff. Go early to avoid the crowd, otherwise you might be waiting 15-30 minutes for coffee, or at the egg station.

Dinner - Water is crazy expensive at the restaurant. THB110 for a 500ml bottle and THB220 for 1.5litre?? Food is otherwise of good quality.

Still new though, so sometimes staff seem confused, although they do try to be responsive. They did hire a nice English-speaking Korean lady for the front counter at staff. Thanks, Kim K.

They have a nice Instagram account.

Taxi monopoly. To leave the hotel for anywhere else, you have to take the taxi's right outside, which is THB50-HB100 more expensive. On your return trip, other taxi's are cheaper. They can send you back to hotel, but they can't pick you up (or probably risk being threatened by the taxi monopoly). We found a driver in Patong that was polite and reasonable charges : +6684-9031727 / 084 9031727 (PP).

Massage: Try the little corner spa opposite the Tuk Tuk Station corner, at Jungceylon Shopping Centre. Name starts with "S". THB300 for 1 hour shoulder or body massage, good and worth it.

"Complimentary" drinks: valid only at the small bar, AND only from 5pm-7pm. Way too short a window for us and clashes with exploring time/dinner. Why not longer? We would have ordered more drinks on our own if you tempted us there around 10pm instead.

The hills on one side is being cleared though. Hurry up and visit this hotel before the construction gets in full swing or the whole hill is bared!

Dear hspace,

Greetings from Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa.

Many thanks for your recent feedback and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are glad you enjoyed the rooms and found them to spacious and well designed. Our Chef Tim will be very happy to hear that you loved the breakfast spread, especially the bakery items.

We take your feedback about the hair dryers and are working towards replacing them.I would like to mention here that all the prices are very competitive and we have a range of choices for our guests and depending on your selection the price varies.

We do operate a free shuttle service which can get very busy at peak times however if the bus is full we do try and arrange complimentary alternative transport. Local taxis available outside have set the prices for all cars which, unfortunately, we have no control over. Coming back the normal charge is about 300 baht however some may charge 200 Baht depending on how busy they are.

We worked on timings of the complimentary drinks based on feedback received from our guests as that seems to be most suitable time for our guests since they plan to go into Patong after drinks or go down to our restaurant for dinner. The bar, however, is open till 11 PM for any guests who wishes to continue to enjoy the view while sippinng their drinks.

The land beside the hotel does not belong to the hotel and unfortunately we do not have any control over it. However, to ensure our guests do not get a view of the barren land and continue to enjoy the green surroundings we have put together a plan which we are working on and should be able to put in place very soon.

We will certainly look at improving where we can and thank you for sharing your experience with us. We have shared your feedback with the entire team.

All of us at Avista Hideaway look forward to seeing you again soon.

Warm Regards,

Avista Management

This plans was truely gorgeous.. I'll do my review in pros and cons.. Unfortunatly there was a few cons..

Cons -
Upon booking this resort I actually booked the wrong Avista at kata beach but I wanted the one in Patong.. I emailed the hotel but they couldn't transfer my information to the other hotel so that was annoying I had to cancel wait for a refund and then re-book myself (purely my fault) but they weren't giving any assistance.
- I was meeting up with a friend so out flights were arriving and departing at Seperate times (staying in the same room) so all up we had to make booking for 4 airport transfer which are $1500 THB each way! Which is $50Aud.. I think this is a rip off and airport transfers should be included
- the shuttle bus to juncelyon and the private beach only runs at scheduled times and is almost always booked out they definately need to do something about it.. I think they would benefit from having a bus that leaves every hour or half an hour.. Also if ur going to the private beach make sure u take money because u have to pay to get in which isn't stated anywhere in the hotel..
-when u are laying by the pool or swimming and want water u need to pay for it.. I think it should be free especially with the weather in Phuket
-if u don't catch the shuttle bus it's $300THB to get to Patong beach and it's too far to walk
Pros-
- my flight was delayed 3 hours and there was still someone waiting to collect me at the airport which I was really happy about the check in was fast as they could see I was exhausted and just wanted to go to sleep it was 3am at this time I was given a welcome drink and flowers
- there is a pillow menu in the room.. We were in room 811 looking over the pool put room was clean big and comfortable
-it was my friends birthday so there was a cake in the room on arrival this was nice but my friend wasn't arriving until the next night and her birthday wasn't until the end of the week.. It's the thought that counts!
- when you check in you can choose when u want your room to be cleaned that's the best ever
-there are 2 swim up pool bars one in each pool the cocktails are great and aren't overpriced
-the buffet breakfast is huge.. There's an egg station and a station for stir fry they cater for all.. Vegetarian dishes also, fresh squeezed fruit juices.. Cereal.. Breads.. Cakes.. Youghurts etc
- the hotel was 50% off when we booked so it was a bargain
-concierge was fantastic they organised all our tours and we could book them to the room
-the private beach is much nicer then Patong.. Make sure u go just remember to take money to pay but you do get a lay down chair and umbrella there is also toilets and a store there

I can't comment on the spa as I thought it was overpriced you can go to the top level of juncelyon and get an hour full body massage for $300THB better yet a 3hour package for under $3000THB so I went there instead!
We only ate at Avista one night and it was the BBQ buffet by the pool.. It's didn't really have a great selection and it was expensive u can get way better food along Patong beach for cheaper..
Overall stay was great!
This is a new hotel and it's decorated beautifully If they fix a few little things up it can definately be 5 star!

Dear Iarissatravels,

Greetings from Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa,

Many thanks for your recent feedback and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are glad you enjoyed the check in experience and everything was handled OK on your arrival. We do realise that guests can be very tired after a long flight and try to provide as many options as we can to make your stay as relaxing as possible.

Chef Tim and his team are delighted you enjoyed the breakfast and I am sorry you felt some of the other options were not satisfactory. We do try to offer a wide variety of choice as well as special events and do try to keep these as reasonably priced as possible.

I apologise if you had some issues moving your booking from our other Resort in Kata to the hideaway and we will certainly look at improving this.

Regarding the airport transfers we do try to price ourselves at similar levels to other Resorts and unfortunately if 4 separate journeys are required then we do have to charge for these. Obviously if guests are all arriving at the same time then there is only the need for 1 journey and 1 charge.

With the swimming pools we do provide complimentary water in all guest rooms as well as the gym and library. Many guests do bring this with them and the stocks are always replenished daily. Unfortunately other branded water from the bars is charged.

We will certainly look at improving where we can and thank you for sharing your experience. We have passed on your comments to the entire team.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Warm Regards

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location is great, away from the hustle of Patong but only 5 min drive. Shuttles are good every 2 hrs, occasionally full in peak times but generally ok. It seems to be a standard 300bht to get from Patong to the hotel which is very expensive for the distance but its not really walkable so you have to pay it when not using the shuttle. We also took the shuttle to paradise beach one morning and had lunch there which was lovely. I'm surprised about how much people are raving about the food here as I found it to be average at best for a hotel of this standard. We ordered a burger by the pool one day and it was very average and the chips inedible. Breakfast was ok, the Danishes were lovely but I didn't like the cooked food and found the omelette to lack flavour. Asian selection looked good but I don't like to eat that for bfast. Overall it was ok but would not have paid for it was is not included. We ordered a pizza one day and that was very nice, we also attended the poolside BBQ and that was ok...the presentation was beautiful but the flavour didn't match. We also ordered some Thai dishes in the restaurant and they were lovely.

When we checked in we were disappointed to find our room overlooked a construction site with two diggers going all day. The hotel was great when we asked to be moved and gave us a free upgrade to a jacuzzi suite which was really lovely and private. I would definitely book one of these next time.

The spa is VERY expensive so we didn't use it. 2500bht for a 30min aloe wrap.

The pools are great, we only went to two of the 3, both have bars.

The games room is good, the library nice. Virtual Golf and Convenience store aren't open yet. Gym is good.

English is generally good and service good.

We did the sunrise tour with simba sea tours to phi phi which was great, also went to the moulin rose lady boy show in town on Bangala which was great. Don't do the ping pong show, they're really expensive 900bht for a beer and just disgusting. I thought it would be a bit of fun but it was just yuck.

Wifi is good in the hotel. It's quite a big property so if you're down the back reception is a bit of a hike but when you call for a buggy pick up they are very prompt so really not an issue.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again. I'd say its probably the best in Patong from what I've seen around but haven't stayed anywhere else.

Room Tip: Make sure you're not overlooking the construction site. Jacuzzi suites are great, try to get a p...

Dear Mags132,

Greetings from Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa,

Many thanks for your recent comments and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us.

We do realise that the Taxis in Phuket are much higher priced than many other parts of Thailand and this is something that affects the entire Island. We do try to offer the free shuttle bus to ensure our Guests have easy transport into Patong and to the Beach.

I am sorry you did not find the food so appealing. We do try to ensure we offer a wide selection to suit most requirements and our Head Chef Tim certainly ensures we use the finest quality ingredients. We will certainly look to see if there are any improvements to be made.

We do apologise for the work being carried out next to the Resort while you were here, this was the local government clearing a section of the forest which is not far from us.

At the Spa we do try to offer the highest quality of service and products, we have a full range of treatments which also include our special Ayurvedic Packages and this does sometimes come at a premium.

Our Virtual Golf is now fully operational and has certainly received some fantastic feedback. Its one of the only simulators endorsed by the PGA and we think it will be a big hit in the future.

We are glad you enjoyed the tours and we do have some very good advice for any Guests visiting shows in Patong, it is always worth discussing with our staff before going so we can advise the best way not to be overcharged. A beer should not be any more than 100 - 150 Baht. It is always best to check prices before ordering and if any more than this simply get up and walk away.

We have shared your comments with the entire team and are continually looking for ways to improve.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Warm Regards

I can't speak highly enough of my recent stay at Avista Hideaway Resort and Spa. A friend and I (both in our early 20s) started our 2 week Thailand holiday with 5 nights at Avista and it was perfect.

Set on the hill above Patong (5 mins drive) it was close enough to the action at night and the perfect relaxing oasis by day.

The modern, African/Indian influences in the architecture and decor are unlike anything I've seen in Thailand. The rooms are spacious and immaculately presented. The pools, bars, restaurant and breakfast buffets are all A+.

I'd recommend upgrading to Club Vista to take advantage of the 2 hours of free cocktails at sunset in the rooftop bar every night...we did. A little too much, perhaps.

To top it off the staff are attentive, friendly and very professional. A special mention to the lovely manager who gave us our welcome tour and Albert&Jeff at the bar.

Again, couldn't recommend this property enough!

Dear Andrew H,

Greetings from Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa,

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us thank you for sharing your recent experience.

We are delighted you appreciated the design of the Resort, we spent a long time finalising the styles to ensure we made the most of the stunning views and surrounding landscapes. We do feel that the final result is breathtaking.

We are glad you enjoyed the additional benefits of the Club Rooms with the cockttail hours, we do find these very popular and it also gives people a chance to meet other guests in the Resort as the atmosphere in the rooftop bar is very intimate and friendly.

The Manager, Albert and Jeff all thank you for the recognition and we have shared all your comments with the rest of the team.

We look forward to seeing you both back again in the future.

Avista Hideaway Resort & Spa, PhuketParadise in Phuket with Fresh Perspectives on the Perfect Tropical EscapeAs a discerning traveller, you understand that there are two sides to every story. Our view is, why limit yourself to a single point of view? Avista Hideaway Resort and Spa offers two equally mesmerising panoramas from its perch upon a steep green peak in southern Phuket.Ensconced in your lavish, luxuriously appointed guest room, Jacuzzi Duplex or the very private pool suite, we assure you of complete privacy. One of the vistas brings you back to nature as you gaze over a sea of trees to the calm of Tri Trang Beach; a contemplative outlook, pristine, green, serene. A contrasting view, due north is an expansive Andaman seascape, azure by day, glittering party strip by night, awash with the possibilities of paradise. This is luxury from a new angle. Naturally, you will find the expected amenities and cosseted comforts one expects from the ultra luxe tropical escapes: a private beach club, indulgent spa and dining adventures, 24-hour butler and seamless service. ... more   less
