“Staying aat Patong Merlin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

This is the 18 time we have stayed at this hotel. We know the staff so good that it is almost our family. They have 3 wonderful pools, but we are mostly at the beach where we know many of the people, mr Bauve who sell bear and mineral water and the massøs Siva(madam take massasje every day) and the longtail driver mr. Dang. Of course have we been at Bangla Road where there are many fine restaurantes, sweedish and danish and some thai resturantes where we eat thaifood which is very good. We stayed there for almost one month. It is a long trip almost 12 hours from Norway but it is worth it.

Room Tip: Room which faces the pool is very good. We have stayed at the same room 3 times.

we stayed here in the first week of january but i am only writing now because there was an issue for which i wrote to the hotel...the email button on their site doesn't work and i had to source their email from their facebook page...almost seems like they want to pretend to be interested in feedback...anyways,i waited for a reply but never did get one and so am writing the review now...
i think the good things about the hotel are the massive and many pools...there always seems to be space at the pools somewhere because there's so many of them and i think that is a big plus at this hotel...breakfast is also good with a decent amount of variety...the lobby is also big and spacious and has a nice atmosphere...
i think the major problem they have is the attitude towards service amongst some of the employees...there were a couple of occasions where they said they would not be able to do something, but an 'advance' tip seemed to change their mind...for example, getting eggs in the day at the pool...it seemed to be 'cannot do' until some of the green turned it to 'can do'. i would consider myself a good tipper and would have tipped them anyway but the point is, i'm used to much better service in thailand and one doesn't expect the same attitude towards service here as one encounters in other countries especially at 5star rates.
some of the personnel at breakfast also seemed to be inflexible towards small requests such as making the scrambled eggs 'runny' for our 20 month old son.
at check out i was told that i had taken an umbrella of theirs and would have to pay for it...i told them exactly where the umbrella was and they relayed that to housekeeping (who were in my room) but they couldn't find it (or were too lazy to look) after 10mins of back and forth, housekeeping called them to tell they had found the umbrella(exactly where i told them in the first place)...they didn't even bother to say sorry...just continued to make the bill as if nothing had happened and they hadn't accused me of stealing an umbrella from the room...
now coming to the email i wrote them...it was about a car rental we hired through them who overcharged from the agreed amount on the last day once he found out we were leaving the next day and wouldn't go on any of the tours he kept pushing on us...i wrote a simple email informing the hotel about this but of course there was no reply (no advance tip i guess) and this i guess is what is the problem with the hotel...they have everything good going for them...great location, pools, big spaces etc but the some of the service staff need a little 'tweaking' to get them out of the 'comfort zone' they find themselves in...
would i go back? probably not but only if i'm booking last minute and don't find any other decent option....but would pack up on the advance tip money even more....

Attended a friends wedding in Patong and this was the selected hotel by most that attended the wedding. The staff were exceptionally good. Warm, inviting and went out of the way to make the guests happy. It is exceptionally big and always crowded. Good place for those who enjoy partying hard. If my partner and myself had gone as a getaway it would have been a let down but it was great with a group of ppl and the late night partying.... The pools were exquisite. The beach being just across the rd, the night markets, shops and restaurants just being right next door makes it ideal as well. The only set back is, this being a massive place and having soo many ppl and 4.5 stars being charged for WIFI. Apart from that it was money very well spent.

My husband and myself stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in feb 2013. The property is not new, but in good condition with the beach right across the street where you can rent umbrella and chairs , shops and food places are everywhere close to the hotel. The pools looked good. The staff is very friendly, and speak ok english. We had problem with air conditioning and lights switching off, which was fixed right away in 30 minutes. The room was clean and good size. Breakfast was nothing special, average. Internet is not free. Please beware, if you like quiet, then you will need to ask for the room far from the hotel main entrance, because hard rock cafe is right there by the hotel, and they are pretty loud every evening. Our room was far enough from all the comotion and noise from breakfast buffet and live music in the hotel lobby in the evening, and hard rock cafe, so we had peaceful stay. The beach is nice with white sand, clean water, watersports, and organised rental, refreshments, and bites to eat for lunch. Sellers on the beach are very nice and not pushy at all. The beach is pretty crowded. Hotel Spa massage was very good. Overall, we had a good experience staying at this hotel and we loved patong beach area.

Room Tip: Superior room, which was upgraded for free to deluxe because hotel was full. Our quiet room # was 73...

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at the Patong Merlin late October 2012.

The price per night was good, included buffet breakfast which was nice. The rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious. The pool area was very impressive, 5 very large pools with very nice well landscaped gardens which is a huge factor for me in liking a hotel. We had a few cocktails in the bar on one night and they were made to perfection. The hotel is located a short distance from the shops, nightlife and markets of Patong. Easily within short walking distance, and the back of the hotel leads out to the beach.

That was the good part....

Upon arriving to our room we had a couple of technicians there repairing the telephone. We were understanding and not bothered by this, the hotel was kind enough to let us check in early so we could hardly by upset over this. We dropped our bags in the room and went for a walk to check out the pool area. When we came back we were told the phones were now fixed. We tried to make an important phone call to book a tour for the following day but found the phone to not work. We walked to the reception area, which was quite a distance from our room as the hotel is very large and the grounds spread a great distance. We reported the problem to the reception and they notified us that someone will be down to fix the phone and to return to our room. We waited in our room for the next hour and when no one came we went back to the reception to again report the problem. This time we asked the reception area if we could use there telephone to make our tour booking. It was quite a task trying to explain to them that our phone did not work, and we would like to use there phone. When we finally did get them to understand what we were asking they advised us that we would need to pay for this call. Talk about frustrating! We made our call and paid the excessive fee and left for the day to do some shopping. Upon returning our phone still did not work. We walked to the reception and told them it still has not been fixed. The lady told us it was because we weren't in the room and they are not allowed to access our room if we are not there. I wonder how they manage to clean the rooms if they can't access them without the guests being in there, or how they can tell a lie while looking you in the eyes and keeping a straight face… To make the situation worse when I told them it is frustrating having to walk all the way to the reception to keep reporting the same problem, they asked me why i don't just ring them from the telephone. The broken telephone which did not work!!! Whilst at the reception i asked them for the access codes for the wifi. No free wifi, this too was an extra cost, a very high rate at that. I paid for a 30 minute access but had a lot of trouble getting my laptop to connect, i have never had such problem and couldn't figure it out so got a refund. I used the business centre to access the internet, this too was an excessive rate and the business centre was old and run down. The telephone was still not fixed throughout my stay here. Upon checking out the safe in our room would not open and someone had to come to the room to manually open it. It took just over an hour for them to come down and luckily we did not have a flight to catch that same day. Checking out of the Merlin was the best part of our stay, not that the reception were any more friendly or professional, but for the simple fact that we were leaving and would never have to return. I have to say again though that the pool area is so nice and if the service improved this hotel could be good.

Booked a night here as it was close to shops in Patong.
The hotel turned out to be extremely crowded, had to wait for 3 hours before checking into the rooms. Staff reception was OK but not as expected for a premium price charged.
No wifi, and rate was every 30 minutes and high for Thai Standard.
Rooms are OK and breakfast reasonable, but not as good as fare offered by similar rated hotels elsewhere.
We used some of their facilities, and when we pay by credit card, the charges were immediately converted into our home currency at the hotel conversion rate (which was 10% higher than bank's rate), on top of that, there was a 3% service charge - we thought this was a rip off considering this place is an internationally rated hotel.
There were 3 swimming pools but they are not very clean, and very crowded.
Because this place is so busy, they could not even entertain an extra half hour of late checkout, rather disappointing , considering we have a late flight on departure on check-out day.
Honest opinion- will not stay here again, in fact , will not come to Patong again, the entire Patong area is a tourist trap and a rip-off. Don't come here, unless you are coming for the other attractions - eg. eroticism.

Room Tip: choose block 7 - new room , with walk -in into swimming pool for ground floor units
