“A five star resort experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2009

What a beautiful place to stay! My only regret is that we only spent one night here en route to our next destination. The check in process was true Thai hospitality – a lovely cold drink, hand towel and time to sit in their huge lobby and relax. The room was gorgeous (we stayed in a deluxe) – modern, large and luxurious. The resort grounds are fantastic – massive pools with a great swim up bar (probably the best cocktails we had the whole trip) and very neat and tidy. The private beach is pretty to look at but far too rocky to actually use, but with so many other swim choices it didn’t matter. The two massage places on this beach are cheap and we heard they were good. There is a tiny restaurant and bar up on a hill next to the hotel which is amazing to sit at while you watch the sun set over the ocean. The lobby bar has happy hour for a couple of hours every night where drinks are half price and with a very entertaining singer performing. The many restaurants were also fantastic. Breakfast in the morning was quite an extensive buffet. We stayed in this hotel after two nights in Patong beach and it was a very welcome escape. If you’re interested in shopping in Patong, it’s a little far away but the hotel offers free shuttles a couple of times a day and a tuk-tuk wouldn’t cost too much. This was one of the best resort experiences I’ve had in a while, I definitely highly recommend the Merlin Beach Resort.

Our stay was from 22-25/Nov 2009 - a family of 4 (with one teenage 14 girl + 10 year old boy) with 2 connecting superior rooms.

Hotel was far away from rowdy Patong beach and if this is your 1st time (like us) to Phuket & would like a taste of night / lively life, food, massage @ Patong then this hotel might not suit you. The free shuttler transport to/fro hotel/Patong beach is odd and most of the time we ended up paying TUTU (about Thb 200) to return from beach to hotel.

Room wise - decent/spacious + clean with nice pool view.

Although I have booked 2 months in advance with early bird promotion direct with hotel but just a week before departure - i found out that room price was even cheaper than what I have paid 2 months ago...

Swimming pools were amazing + hugh (3 in total) ~ probably due to its location, hotel was never over-crowded which is comfortable enough for us to laze/paddle around

We stayed here for 4 days 3 nights - morning breakfast was repeatation but overall considered acceptable.

SPA - not able to try in the hotel as only 3 masseur available and most time slot given unable to fit us. End up we went for the cheap massage just at the beach (right side of the beach which was ran by local and charged 1/4 of what hotel is charging) - standard were almost same as what we have tried at Patong and Laguna except enviroment/ambiance were different that you will not be served with towel/tea and air-con at the beach.

We transferred to this hotel after a false start at the seaview patong (dirty, noisy and very small rooms). The Merlin Beach is not our normal style of hotel, due to the large size and also the fact that it has a kids club.

This hotel turned out to be just what we needed. It was set far enough away from the craziness of Patong so that we could relax during the day, yet close enough that we could go into Patong at night for a cheap meal and a massage.

The pools were amazing and we always found enough sunbeds to relax the day away. As others mentioned, the beach is nothing special- all rocks. The restaurant up the top of the hill (not owned by the hotel) is worth a visit if you want a cheap feed but can't be bothered traveling into Patong.

One thing that i would like to mention is that it is a very large hotel and although the staff are polite, they didn't seem to be as friendly as we have found at other hotels/resorts we have travelled to. It might be due to the number of guests and the fact that there are so many staff, so you don't tend to run into the same staff over and over.

Generally, we were not bothered by the number of kids at the resort, as we tended to swim in the middle pool - not the one where the kiddies pool was. We upgraded to a superior room which was a bit bigger and had a lovely view of the pool and the beach.

After a grueling day long bus ride to Phuket we arrived very tired and cranky from being ripped off all day by shady Thai transportation people. However, our spirits lifted as we walked into the beautiful entrance to the Merlin Beach Resort and were greeted with cold drinks while we waited for them to check us in. It was a little awkward when they said we couldn't bring the glasses with us into the rooms so we downed the rest of the drink in front of them to give them their glasses back, but whatever. This was the nicest hotel we booked on our trip, we stayed in 3 star bungalows usually and this was the first experience in a hotel. We enjoyed all the comforts of the hotel, especially the large pools and swim up pool bar. The restaurants here are nice, and there's a few to choose from depending on how much you want to spend. The beach is awful, don't stay here for the beach. It's very rocky and very ugly. Better yet just avoid Phuket if you can, none of the beaches are that nice. What we enjoyed about here was we could stay at the hotel and lounge by the pool, and the hotel offers several other activities during the day. Patong is unfortunately not within walking distance but the hotel offers transportation at specific times, and we found we were stuck in Patong longer than we wanted and took a tuk tuk back for 200-250 Bht, which is probably a rip off.

This was our second trip to Phuket and we decided to not stay in Patong this time, but to stay out a little to escape the frenzy of Patong. The Merlin was simply amazing! From the moment we checked in, we were greeted by a lovely staff member who gave us a wet towel and a refreshing drink (which was very yummy)! We stayed in a pool access room and all i can say is that it definately is value for money! The rooms were immaculate, always clean and the convenience of having pool access right at your door was priceless! After a day of activities or shopping it was nice to go back to your room and jump straight in the pool without have to drag everything out to the main pool area.

The pools at the Merlin were stunning, always clean and the atmosphere so tranquil and peaceful! When you walk around the resort it looks so beautiful and modern and you can see the beach in the background when in the restuarants and swimming in the main pool area. The restaurants at the resort were a little more expensive, but the food was, the majority of times really nice. The little restaurant that is up on the hill that everyone raves about on tripadvisor was very over-rated and felt more like you were eating at a budget diner. The meals were very cheap, so that would be a plus for anyone wanting a cheap meal. Overall I wasn't a fan, service was very slow, however, the people were gorgeous and very polite and the scenery is also a bonus as it over looks the beach.

The only down side to the Merlin is that you are not right in Patong, so if you want to go back into Patong you will need to get a tuk tuk (there is an abundant supply of tuk tuks and drivers who are situated directly outside the Merlin). Tuk tuks cost 200 baht for a one way trip into Patong. The shuttle bus service was really handy and if you get the chance and the time go into Phuket Town. The plus about not being directly in Patong is that when you return to your hotel you feel like you are at home and the air felt and smelt so much fresher than Patong. The only other thing to keep in mind is that the beach is not really for swimming as it's full of rocks, but it is gorgeous to look at.

We are returning to Phuket next year and have decided to spend 8 days at Patong and 8 days out of Patong again to get the best of both worlds! I would definately recommend the Merlin Beach Resort it was very beautiful.
