“Merlin Beach Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

My extended family have just spent 10 days at Merlin Beach, my husband and I have stayed before, and it was just lovely. The pools are great. The rooms are a bit tired in some respects, and I was disappointed there were no orchids in our room as our previous visits, but as returning guests we were presented with lei's on arrival and the staff on the whole were very attentive. It was very different travelling with small children 6mths and 4 years. The children were very well catered for in the resort. The kids club was enjoyed by our 4 year old, but I have a few reservations, as in only one staff member, and they seem to pop out and leave the children at times. The food in all the restaurants was very good, and reasonable prices. On the whole we really enjoyed our stay, as did the rest of our family.I would recommend the Resort and would stay there again. The Little Tiger restaurant up the hill to the left of the beach is a nice change, and great view of the sunset. We had our washing done by the ladies on the beach for 70 baht per kilo, worked well for us.Cheaper in Patong, but this was much more convenient, drop off one day and collect the next.We also had massages and manicures and pedicures on the beach, all very much enjoyed, and very cheap 1 hour massage 300 baht.If you want to be a little out of town its a great choice, 250/300 baht for a taxi or Tuk Tuk to town, or the resort has free transport at certain times to and from Patong. We will be back.

If you have no other place to go in Phuket use this hotel, but you must avoid booking through their web site (Wide Discovery) unless you want a rip off.
1- Good thing: huge swimming pool with multi levels and a water slide, and another one for babies.
2- A shuttle bus available between Merlin Resort, Merlin Patong, and Merlin Phuket every 30 to 45 mins. However it stops between 6:30 pm and 9:30pm, then make another 1 additional trip at about 9:30 pm returning at 10:15 pm.
3- They put tree leafs in the room to avoid snakes (or maybe mosquitoes), but it have powerful smell too.

Bad things:
1- Rude staff who don't respond to your needs unless a supervisor command them. They also don't speak clear english and when you ask them again (because you are not sure of what they said) they show you they are angry, or avoid answering you totally.
2- Premium rooms are same as deluxe rooms (size and facilities) except in its much higher price, and if you found out that you was ripped off and want to change to deluxe because premium was not as you was told they totally refuse. I was convinced by Wide Discovery agent that Premium beach front unit is bigger than the deluxe and have much better view, hence I agreed on its premium rate and got 2 rooms (for 2 families), but when I went there I found that it is exactly same size and facilities as the deluxe with a bad view (sea view from above a wood cabin) and the deluxe can see the lovely pool as well as the open sea, I tried to change the room even by taking additional room and pay additional fees, but they refused giving me the rack rate (which normally is additional TBH 2500 per night) and told me that I would pay more than TBH 4500 per room if I want to change because they have a deal with the agent!
3- Beach (out of the water) is ok, but benches and tents are very few and is piled at one side of the beach.
4- Once you step into the sea its all rocks, dead corals and some broken glasses/bottles (not suitable for children and regular swimmers at all).
5- Guests safety is not their concern. There is no life guard on the beach, actually I saw a man hurt his leg in the sea (in shallow water) and another guest ran to the hotel and brought 2 staff to save him. Also there was some work at the pool side to clean the floor (by a noisy machine) and there were a lot of dust coming out of it, and they didn't bother to use a blocking cloth/curtain, the dust covered part of the pool and the swimmers who flew in panic with their children. I talked to the staff who were watching the labor working with the machine and tried to explain to them in english and body-language (pointing and waving) but they were just looking at me and not doing anything.
6- The hotel is not only at the end of Patong beach, it is separated from the beach by 2 hills, which the taxi or tuktuk have to climb up & down when going to/from it, hence it is costly to transfer between the hotel and Patong beach or Patong city, and takes some time. Also safety is a concern in that hill road at night because it is a 2 ways road (1 lane going and 1 lane coming) and there are many curves while descending and ascending, in addition to night creatures crossing the road between trees, example one night as we were in the shuttle bus from Patong city the driver hit the breaks hard while descending from part of the hill, there was a huge python crossing the road blocking one lane.

Room Tip: If you still feel like going to this hotel take the deluxe room with pool view on 3rd or 4th floors...

The Merlin Beach Resort is 10 minutes from the centre of Patong on its very own sandy cove. The resort has 3 pools - one main pool, one that is secluded for pool access rooms and a kid friendly pool for families. We have stayed at the resort 3 times over 5 years and each occassion we found the resort well worth the money. Rooms are reasonably sized for 2 adults and a teenager or 2 smaller children. Beds are comfy, bathrooms are good size and TV has plenty of channels. We loved the breakfast which had loads of choices to suit all nationalities. The resort has a free shuttle to Patong and this is a good money saver. We ate at the restaurants - a bit pricey - and the nightly buffet which was OK value for money and included entertainment. Will definately return as this hotel provides an oasis to the bustle in Patong but is still close enough to the action!

Room Tip: Recommend upgrading to a POOL ACCESS room if you can afford it.

Not a complaint for us. Good all round. Great location close enough to patong to be convienient but far enough away to be disconnected, clean rooms with comfortable beds and good size bathrooms. And breakfasts to die for. Not to mention a good menu in house and very reasonable prices. Good, good, good, good...

Room Tip: Try to grab a beach front room

We loved Merlin. The grounds are beautiful, pools are amazing, and rooms perfect. The staff are great and the buffet breakfast..... WOW. LOVED the buffet breakfast.
Song tew into patong or back was 250-300 baht, a little on the high side but in our opinion worth it for the location. The food isn't THAT reasonably priced as a few have said, in fact we found it quite difficult to get a cheap meal when we wanted something quick and easy. The first night we were they we asked to take the order back to our room due to the youngest (2, almost 3) being stroppy and ready for bed, and we were told this was fine but we would be charged an extra 25% room service fee for takeaway food. I thought that was a little rough.
The best deals we found for a quick lunch was the pies, in the little cafe near pool 2, 90 baht, and the chicken and blue cheese ones were AWESOME. They are an awesome size and I actually struggled to finish mine. Unfortunately there is no 'menu book' or anything like that, so you have to physically walk to each restaurant to read the menus and suss out the pricing.
They don't seem to keen on sharing all the little secrets themselves though, and we found a few of them before we left. Happy hour at the swim up bar from 4-6 on a Tuesday night is well advertised, but there is also happy hour EVERY night in the lobby from 6-8.. half price drinks :) This is GREAT if you love your cocktails!
Movie night on a Wednesday night down by pool 1 on the grass. There is also a happy hour at the bar by pool one on Wednesday nights with buy one get one free drinks - check the time with them but it may have been 8-10pm.
Make sure you use your restaurant card even if you don't spend the minimum amount (you get a stamp card that gives you more discount the more times you eat at restaurants onsite) because we discovered a few will still give the level of discount without stamping to the next level. Confusing but you'll see what I mean.
There is no washing machines at the resort, you HAVE to use the laundry service. It is priced extremely high, so head down to the beach shacks instead. We had our laundry done on the left, and massages on the right. The massages were 300 baht for 1 hour, Braids were 600 baht and my henna tattoo was 250baht. They don't tell you it dyes your arm hair though so I look a bit like a man at the moment.
The laundry at the beach was 70 baht per kg (pretty sure it was about that per item at the resort) and it came back beautifully washed and pressed. If you stay a while I would recommend doing what we did and get it ALL done in the last couple of days and it is pressed and packaged so well that it makes packing a breeze! Not only that but no washing to do when you get home!
They have just finished the new kids play area, and the waterslide is brilliant.

Head down to the beach when the tide is out if you have kids and explore the little rock pools, we found the most amazing little creatures and the kids had a blast. As the sun is going down in the evening, head to the level one corridor on the right, and stand by the lift. There are THOUSANDS of bats, that fly through the corridor for around half an hour. It is one of the most amazing things we have ever seen and the kids were in hysterics. Tiny little things, we first thought they were some type of sparrow but soon realised what they were.
After dark if you head down to the beach again, the hermit crabs make an appearance. They are great to handle and the kids had so much fun trying to find really big ones, then really tiny ones. They are everywhere so you wont miss them.
Don't forget that most prices dont include the service and vat charge (7% and 10%) so if your bill is a little higher than anticipated that is why.
Kids club was great, make sure you book them in for the activities (an hour beforehand) and if you have any under 3 we found this wasn't an issue with a sitter. The sitter cost us 150baht per hour to supervise him in the kids club. We had her back a few nights later so we could have a few hours to ourself, and it was 300baht per hour for all 3 kids. It was all very official (a fluent english speaker accompanied her to sign her in and take any specific instructions from us, to be sure of no miscommunication) - We came home to 3 sleeping children... she was wonderful!
Even with all my gripes, the place was lovely and we would certainly go back if we return to Patong.
