Enjoy your evening, while seated a few feet from the dramatic interplay of waves crashing into subtly lit rocks.Da Maurizio's has always distinguished itself from other Italian restaurants and the new menu lives up to its already firmly established reputation. Commencing the 1st February 2011 more than 90% of the fruit, vegetables, herbs and even eggs used to make our homemade pasta, are ORGANIC. It is our aim to be 100% ORGANIC as soon as possible. From among the assorted items on the menu is live fish and lobster, imported meats, homemade pastas and the chef's special tasting menu. Of course, no meal at Maurizio's would be complete without considering the selection from the Wine Spectator Award wining cellar and a sampling of homemade desserts.Delicious food, a gorgeous sunset and the serenade of the surf make this open air restaurant at Kalim Bay a must for any visit to Phuket.

“Wasted potential...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2009

We heard about this restaurant through a "best of Thailand" restaurant guide and were impressed with the descriptions of the dishes served. When we arrived we were instantly happy with the great view offered. Unfortunately this would be one of only a few positive aspects of the evening. Let's start with some positive notes: The wine list was good if not a bit priced at the upper end of what's acceptable for the bottles offered. Furthermore, the views are great overlooking the sea. Then came the food: One Beef carpaccio with white truffles (at 1100baht) was served with a very cheap and extremely sour balsamic vinegar which totally ruined the delicate taste of the white truffles. Furthermore, it was not served at the table so it was impossible to assess the quality of the truffle. Furthermore, the seared foie gras was absolutely horrible. It was a tiny and thin slice of foie gras which was not seared but burnt to a point where it was completely dry and tasted of nothing else but burnt flesh. The chef at that point was already sitting down and talking to the owner (I presume). When we complained about both the vinegar and foie gras we were told that there was no other vinegar. We would however receive a new starter for the foie gras. In the meantime, the staff just left the burnt remains in front of us and when it came back a second time, the chef had to clear the plates himself (the staff was absolutely incompetent). The second time around it was still a very small starter but at least the taste was much better. As we were eating, a total of 6 waiters were standing at three meters from our table all watching us eat which made for very uncomfortable dining....However when our glasses needed to be refilled, no one showed...In other words, the staff was irritatingly present but not of any use. In a good restaurant staff is always nearby but you never notice them...Don't know how they manage this but this restaurant absolutely failed at it. In all fairness, one main dish turned out to be very tasty (Veal chop Saltimbocca with sage and parma ham), the Wagyu tenderloin with pepper sauce however was bland and unimaginative. This restaurant has a lot of potential (some good dishes and stunning location), however the staff needs to be trained properly, the chef needs to be in the kitchen to ensure that what is served is not horribly overcooked...All in all, what this restaurant needs is to rediscover its passion for hospitality and quality!

Having had dinner at another restaurant (Acqua) a few days later I cannot believe I wasted so much money for an inferior and overpriced (more than 25k baht for 4 persons) dining experience. The staff at Da Maurizio should invest in a dinner at Acqua to see how a restaurant at this price level should treat (pamper) its guests. At more affordable prices Acqua is better all around: Better food, a passionate chef, great staff, great decor (everything contains the restaurant logo and the design is absolutely fantastic)....My final conclusion can be no other than: What a waste of such a great location. It's time for Da Maurizio to take its profession serious and lower prices and drastically increase quality of service and dishes...

“Reputation better than reality”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2009

The restaurant doesn´t meets its reputation. A party of 4 had a mediocre meal. The starter of foie gras was served as an overcooked 30 gram dish, e.g. a leather sole was the closest to compare it with. Despite the apologies and new serving by the chef, the <50 gram doesn´t add to the THB 725 price tag. We had better in Thailand (Red Sky in Bangkok!). A Carpaccio with white truffle (THB 1,100) was served without dressing. The Balsamic must have been the cheapest vinegar on the peninsula. The olive oil was stale. I asked for better quality but was informed that this was their best!? The Carpaccio, the white truffle were wasted by the ingredients of the dressing. Again try Red Sky; excellent! Tip: If you serve truffle, you take the truffle and serve it at the table in front of your guest where he can enjoy the sent while scraping. The Wagyu beef was grilled OK. The veal (chops) saltimbocca was well prepared and tasteful. The linguini with white truffle was tasteful, but see the remark of serving a truffle dish. The best was the Amarone wine, which was of good temperature. All in all, we had a disappointing meal with a price tag of THB 25,500! All bad? No, the staff was superfluous and friendly although the absence of a good maitre was eminent. You are not comfortable dining, when 6 persons are standing around your table. We were the last guest arriving at 9.30 pm and during the entrée, staff started to clean all tables for plates, glasses and silver ware. If this is the best Phuket can offer, we will skip Italian food in the future whilst visiting Phuket.

“The most romantic restaurant on the island with great food...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2009

I've eaten here several times and my primary regret is that I didn't find this restaurant sooner in my several trips to Phuket!

The owner is from Italy and has settled in Phuket and has opened this delightful restaurant.

On arrival, one descends a grand sandstone staircase flanked by tropical gardens and waterfalls. Palm trees frame the clear blue waters of the Andaman sea and the setting of the sun on the western horizon. A fresh sea breeze and the sound of gentle waves against the rocks of the shore. Stunning!

Try to get a table next to the water, you'll likely require a reservation. The ambiance is fantastic. From the get go the service is very attentive, though not overbearing. The Prosciutto Wrapped Goat Cheese is awesome. I usually follow that up with the 240 Day Aged Australian Black Angus Beef Filet. Also excellent. Of course the dinner wouldn't be complete without a bottle of red. They have a great selection, winning the Wine Spectator ‘Award of Excellence’ for 2003 and 2004. You'll pay a premium for a bottle from a reputable grower, but blame it on Thailand's exhorbitant taxes on wine!

Prices are high for Phuket, but I subscribe to the notion that you get what you pay for. Not an every day restaurant, but one for special occasions, or simply wanting to splurge on great dinner.

We dined there about 6 weeks ago. The setting is beautiful and the service is very good. The meal was good without being memorable, but "Oh Boy" what a ripoff. My girlfriend and I shared an entree, shared a main course and each had a desert. We also shared a bottle of wine (1950 Baht) and my girlfriend had a cocktail and I had a mixed drink both before entree. Cost over 7000 BAHT or Australian $350, Could have had 2 fine dining experiences at top Italian restaurants here for that price. They simply cannot justify charging exhorbitant prices like that. Won't be going back when I return in 3 weeks and certainly won't be recommending to friends over there. They need to take a reality check.
