We have just returned from a fabulous stay at the Krabi Thai Village. As a base to explore Krabi and Ao Nang it was almost perfect. The rooms, staff and location were excellent. The room was spacious, gave wonderful views of the spectacular vegetation and were kept scrupulously clean. The pool was more than adequate for our needs and the staff there were always helpful, arranging our beds for the day from the comfort of the balcony when we needed them. The hotel was not without its faults: the amenities, food and beverages were over-priced. Don't be fooled by the "complimentary" meal; the "discount" still meant we were charged more than we could have got a meal and drinks for down the road - "complimentary" obviously has a different meaning in Thailand.
Staying at the Krabi Thai Village was the perfect location to explore Ao Nang and the surrounding area. Within minutes of the hotel we were able to find everything we wanted to make our holiday perfect. Ao Nang itself is just a 5 minute walk away and great food, fabulous excursions and all the other amenities the hotel offered available at a fraction of the price. Walk down and get a tuk tuk back, don't pay more than 40 baht.
You'll find your own favourites, but we found the food at the Royal Tandoor - wonderful, friendly service and lovely Thai and Indian food - and Patjawan's - superb, authentic Thai food - particularly good. Our rule of thumb was to avoid the glitzty, plastic tables and paper napkins gave better value for money and fantastic food. Don't pay for style over substance.
Just across the road from the KTV you could get all your laundry done for 70baht a kilo, washed and ironed. Better than 50p for a pair of knickers at the hotel and it was great coming home with almost no washing. You can get it done cheaper, but you have to remember where you've left it! Also the massage place across from the hotel was excellent and a quarter of the price charged by KTV.
Take a trip on the long-tailed boats to the surrounding islands. Book your own from the sea front. We had a beautiful day out doing what we wanted at our own pace, the boatman didn't rush us and took us where we wanted. The beach at Ao Nang is OK, but the sea isn't great and it was wonderful to see the clear seas the other islands provide, as well as the phenomenal scenery.
Overall we had a great time staying at the Krabi Thai Village. As a base to explore it was superb. Ao Nang is a bustling resort, providing everything you need from a holiday in Thailand, without the other "delights" of Thailand being in your face. We had a fantastic time and wouldn't hesitate to return, either to Krabi or The Krabi Thai Village.
