Stayed there with my wife in October for 2 weeks and we were disappointed due to several reasons. For such a huge hotel, there is not much space around the pool area and the pool is for the size of the hotel too small. Especially if you want to relax and you are looking for a quiet and shady place. Then there are too much kids running and playing around the pool and kids are usually noisy, especially if there are many of them coming together. Even on the beach, there are only a few deckchairs and some trees, but this is not enough to find one and to have the full day a shady place. There are no sunshades available. If you are going for breakfast during rush hour (9 - 10) then it's very crowed and you have to wait and queue. The remaining selection isn't the best, but the quality of the food is good. No complaints if you like fruits only.
The room types are all the same, even if you book a Zen room, there is just a seperate shower, but no additional comfort. Another complaining point was house keeping, a lot of "daily-used" items were not replaced reguarly, e.g. cotton buds, mouthwash, small towels, shampoo and the body lotion in the bathroom. There was also a bulb, which was never repaired during our stay.
Mandara Spa is great, but very expensive, if you can do without the "Mandara Service" and you only want a massage, outside the hotel are a lot of them for just 10% of the Mandara rate.
As I am a business traveller who stays more than 100 nights in 5 star hotels (mostly in Asia) per year, then you expect another level of service and comfort, if you book to a 5 Star Sheraton hotel. Especially for the Sheraton brand, where probably a lot of business travellers going for their vacation to a hotel within the Starwood group (either to redeem or to collect points), or to get additional benefits as a SPG Gold member, then the hotel could use this as a marketing instrument that these guests feel very well and can say "wow" what a great location and a great Sheraton hotel. My wife was more disappointed on this then me, because I told her, that the Sheraton hotels in Asia are wonderful (which is my experience with a lot of them), but this is definetly an exception.
The restaurants within the hotel are good, but overprized, so we also went several times out of the hotel to visit the local Thai restaurants around. But even here, we were not always satisfied. Especially with the famous "PanSea" Restaurant, where we got spoiled fish or tiger prawns. We had some horrible nights (diarrhoea, vomit and fever) and it took us 4 days before we recovered. So be careful when eating outside the hotel, they do not care of their food. Unfortunately we left Krabi the day after this first horrible night for Bangkok, but we couldn't enjoy Bangkok at all. We stayed in the hotel room only due to our sickness and the hotel nurse visited us 4 times a day. Thanks to "The Peninsula Hotel", this is a real 5 star service.
