“Just 'average'; but you can do better elsewhere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

It's hard to be too critical of a guesthouse costing <600 Baht per night in high-season, but I've stayed in others in Thailand in this price-range, and they provided a better experience than here. This guesthouse rates somewhere between 2-3 stars (poor-to-average) for me, using the Tripadvisor ranking criteria. On the whole, I left disappointed, and I won't be considering this guesthouse next time I visit Kanchanaburi.

Firstly, the good points. The rooms are large. The air-conditioning works very well. The free wi-fi worked nicely. The location is serene. You are one minute's walk from the terrific "Nut's Restaurant".

Now the bad points. (i) The room wasn't tidied/cleaned daily, including provision of new towels and emptying of bins; this becomes an "issue" when you are requested to not flush toilet paper in the bathroom (ii) The bathrooms themselves were a bit grimy (iii) No sign of hot water in the shower after three days of attempts, despite running the shower for 5-10 minutes each time (iv) No bed-sheets provided, just a loose quilt to throw on top (v) Not even a bar of soap provided in the bathroom (vi) No small bar-fridge to keep drinks cold in the heat of Kanchanaburi (vii) Curtains that didn't quite cover the window fully, which might create 'privacy issues' for some people (viii) No facilities to have a bite to eat/drink at the guesthouse or meet other travelers for a chat (ix) The guesthouse backs on to a noisy late-night music venue, which might be a problem for light sleepers (x) Rock-hard beds, although this is not unusual for Thai guesthouses (xi) Staff were nowhere to be seen, until it was time to leave and pay.

Out of curiosity, I had a wander around River Kwai Road on my last afternoon in town, checking out a few other guesthouses in the same price range (~600B/night). There appeared to be much better value on offer elsewhere. It would be unfair of me to list their names here, but I am happy to provide this information privately.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the upper-floor, or you may encounter privacy and noise issues.

Got this on agoda, £12/night. We are a couple who stayed for 3 nights. Nice family run guesthouse, the son speaks English and was always very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are very spacious and clean.air conditioning worked very well.

About 25 minute walk to the bridge but you can get a taxi and be there in 5 minutes. Lots and lots of places within a few minutes walk to eat and drink. Night market 5 minutes walk.

The main road in kanchanaburi is noisy with the bar music and you can hear it in the evenings until midnight. I still slept well. I imagine the guest houses closer or on the main road would be much noisier.

Hot shower was generally good (there was one day the water wasn't hot). Also slight smell in the bathroom. But nothing to moan about and I would definitely recommend this place for a stay in kanchanaburi. One expat was staying there for 1 month as he loved it so much.

Very good value for money.

We had a downstairs room facing the office - room C. The room was quiet large with a double and single bed, TV, table and chair, and a drying rack. There was also an ensuite wet room and another 'room' that was open to the outdoors with slits in the wall - we tried drying clothes in there but they just stayed wet for days and then smelt badly! The room was mostly clean but the bathroom was a bit outdated and grubby. The rooms are available with or without aircon - they just take the a/c remote out and put in a fan.

The family that run the guesthouse are really nice. From check in to check out they were helpful and friendly and when we were waiting for our mini-van to Ayutthaya they bought us water and grapes and wished us well!

The guesthouse is about a 10 minute walk from the Train station in Kanchanaburi, it's well signposted and just before the main strip of hotels/guesthouses. The location is good for getting around and the main road is a great place to pick up taxis etc. As it was slightly set back from the strip we thought it would be quiet but the hotel backs onto the back of one of the bars and we could hear loud music until midnight each night. Also as our room was by the office we could hear people moving around all night. Weirdly a cat also wanders round at night screeching, but thankfully not all night!

However, my only real problem with the guesthouse is that the beds felt like sleeping on a rock - it was more than firm!

All in all I'd consider staying here again as it was OK value but I'd probably check some other places first!

We stayed at the Thai Guest House in Oct. 2012 for a weekend.

Location is excellent.
It's on the main road with all the bars, restaurants, car rentals etc. but without to much of the downsides like loud noise and much traffic, because the building is 30 meters behind the gateway and separated to the street by a row of buildings.
We had a room upstairs, so we heard some music till 11.30pm, it might be better in the rooms downstairs, but it was okay. If you are a light sleeper, you may not find rest till the music stops.
The mattresses were hard, but comfortable.

Guesthouse is run by a family, so service is great and of course, there's a familiar atmosphere. The guest's can also use the kitchen of the families house, which some guest did. There's no need for it, because good and cheap restaurants are within 2 minutes by walk. When we left, the owner gave us a free ride to the bus station.

We took a scooter for 200 bath/day and visited Erewan National Park, what I recommend everybody to do.

Rooms are clean for local conditions, and they have AC. We paid average of 550 baht per night, which was a gorgeous price for that.
If you like a good price/value, this is the place to stay.

We had a good time there.

This mother-and-son operation is a definite winner if you're staying around backpackerland in Kanchanaburi. Starting at 350 baht, the rooms are incredibly large and spacious with massive beds, TVs (if you need any additional entertainment whilst in SEA), large bathrooms, clothes rack; and, if you're in an upstairs rooms, even a balcony! The family also supply toilet paper. My only complaint is that there are no fly screens - while large windows overlook the front balcony, and sliding glass doors face the back balcony, these can only be kept open if you don't mind being attacked by mosquitos all ight. If they installed some screens, and upgraded the plumbing system (the bathroom was a little smelly), this place would be perfect!

Stayed here in early 2012, found the place by luck, just walking through the town. It turned out to be one of the best stays ever. Close to town conveniences, very reasonable price, extremely clean, and I made a very good friend, Note. I will definitely return, one day.
