“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

A lovely hotel with a good choice of rooms, either in the colonial main hotel or in the villas. Even when it was full, there was plenty of space as there are various pools dotted around the hotel grounds. The hotel is sited five minutes walk from the main streets of Hua Hin, so going to shop or eat in town is easy, but it also is quiet and relaxing once you are in the grounds. The various restaurants in the hotel are all excellent. They may look a little pricey compared to Hua Hin restaurants but offer food and service of high quality, so the choice is yours.

I agree with some earlier comments that The Club is a little over-egged. No butler service materialised. Changing to more formal wear for the afternoon session can also be a pain, if you're at the pool and just fancy a cold drink and a snack. The evening session was particularly busy, especially if you arrived for the last half hour for a pre-dinner drink. Having said that, the quality of food and drink was high.

All in all a great hotel which we'd certainly recommend and use again.

We have just returned from a holiday in the wonderful hotel. We celebrated our golden wedding and the staff were simply amazing. We were upgraded to a colonial room and we were presented with flowers, fruit and a cake. Just a short walk out of the hotel and you are among the many restaurants and bars located in the area. A truly memorable stay and all the staff were great. I would recommend this hotel to all travelers.

I feel I cannot do justice to this hotel It is by far the best hotel I have ever stayed in from the Location the grounds the garden rooms service and staff total 5*+. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis in a standard room in the railway wing a floor above the gym ,the room was perfect large comfortable bed lots of wardrobe space and hangers the decor was beautiful and chic. The bath room had rain shower and a bath plenty of fresh soft towels. The veiw of the garden was breath taking looking out onto lush greenery and a waterfall surrounded by a carp pond .
The pool areas looked out directly onto the sea and beach area, plenty of sun loungers the pool staff very helpful and so friendly.A lovely beach which you could walk on for miles .
the breakfasts full of choice even for a fussy eater like myself again service efficient and friendly.
The hotel itself close to to plenty of shops restaurants all within walking distance.Tuk Tuk taxi starting at 100brt or the local 10brt bus within walking distance to visit further afield.
his was our 7th visit to Hua hin previously staying at the Hilton which is a loverly hotel but the Centara far out classes it in all aspects.I have been home 1 week now but already wish I could return, hopefully next year .I would recommend this hotel to anyone it is in my opinion faultless

We booked:

• a club room for 5 nights

• an adjoining club room for 2 nights of our stay for our in-laws, and

• an extra standard room for one night of our stay for a friend (using a free voucher for a standard room and breakfast).

This meant we got to see a few different rooms and can offer a few different perspectives.

Here’s an overview.

Voucher redemption

• They didn't balk when we redeemed the free voucher for the standard room. I’ve had instances in the past when voucher rooms at other places were very hard to book or use.

Check-in

• The club rooms are meant to have express in-room check-in. When we arrived for our 2pm check-in, our two club rooms weren't ready, so we did the formalities at reception and were then taken to the Club to wait about 45 minutes for the rooms. (I always feel guilty writing down these first-world problems, but when you've got two kids in tow who are hankering to get in the pool and the swim wear is with the luggage that has already disappeared, a quick check-in certainly helps.)

The rooms

• My wife and I and two kids under 5 were staying in one room and we had forgotten to request an extra bed. They quickly organised an extra bed with little fuss and no additional cost.

• Our Club rooms were above reception on the top floor (third floor) with lovely, long-distance ocean views looking directly out to sea.

• There are no lifts at this resort, so if steps are a problem for you, make sure you ask for a room on the ground floor.

• Club rooms are a decent size, with a large, half-covered balcony with a drying rack, and a couple of deck chairs for reading.

• The air conditioning in the club rooms worked well, but wasn't anywhere near cool enough in the standard room.

• The water pressure in the shower was very poor in all rooms. The hot water came on and off while you were standing under it, but I’m not sure if this was a third floor feature, or if it was like this throughout the resort. With the big variances in temperature, it made it difficult to safely shower the kids. (We used the bath instead.)

The food

• The breakfast buffet has plenty of variety, including on-demand fruit smoothies.

• The breakfast at the club is al la carte and doesn’t offer the same variety, though the quality of what they do offer is better. For example, e.g Eggs Benedict. Strangely, the fruit smoothies are presented in shot glasses in the club, rather than tall glasses.

• We preferred the variety at the buffet, and having everything on display and ready to go at the buffet, because it was much easier to get the kids fed. (The buffet has cooking stations where they cook on demand – smoothies, waffles, pancakes and eggs.

• We didn't have lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants at Centara, because of the excellent afternoon tea and canapés at cocktail hour provided with the Club rooms, and because Centara is so centrally located to the night market and heaps of great local restaurants in Hua Hin (a 10 minute walk away).

The Club

• This is definitely worth it, especially if you can get a special or promotion from a booking website. (We paid about $165 a night - low season).

• The canapés and afternoon tea were great, with plenty of variety offered during the 5 days of our stay.

• The Thai inspired canapés were surprisingly good (think larb, som tum).

• There were plenty of people like us with young kids using the club.

• The Kid’s Club is open to 6pm, so we would drop the kids at Kid’s Club around 5pm, have a cocktail and some canapés at the Club, and then grab the kids and bring them up to the real club for a Shirley Temple or fruit cocktail to share with us.

• The club’s outdoor seating area probably seats about 30, and it would be excellent if a part of that was designated as a non smoking area, because the smokers stink and it’s hard to get away from them.

• The staff everywhere are very professional and friendly. Marloes in particular is lovely.

The Kid’s club

• Kid’s club is included, and our kids loved spending at least a couple of hours in there everyday. The staff there are also lovely.

The beach

• We only went in the water at the beach once. The water is not clear because Hua Hin is on the coast, not an island. Our daughter loved playing in the sand, and we always take a bucket and spade and beach toys with us.

The pools

• One of the four pools was closed for maintenance the week we were there, but that didn't matter because we enjoyed the pool down near the beach.

• Most hotels we've stayed at before around Hua Hin have a water slide for the kids, or a shallow kids pool with sand for them to play with. (Hyatt at Hua Hin is a great example of this.) Centara doesn't, but our kids didn't seem to miss it. (We also took them for a day trip Black Mountain Water Park – see my other review – which they loved.)

Checkout

• Late checkout until 4pm is offered for Club upon rooms, based on availability. Our in laws were asked to get out strictly by 2pm, as there room was needed.

• We were able to leave the room at about 3pm, which was appreciated.

Summary

• We really enjoyed Centara, despite the water pressure and hot water being an issue, and the air conditioning not working properly in one of the rooms. The staff are friendly and professional, Centara is brilliantly located, and the club benefits are outstanding (and great value if you can get a special or promotion on them through a booking website).

• We would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: There are no lifts at this 3 storey resort, so if stairs are a problem, request a ground floor room.

A great hotel. My only criticisms would be the state of the beach and the over-selling of the Club.

For a hotel next to the beach one would expect a little more effort to be put into keeping it clean – even though it is not actually the hotel’s responsibility. It claims that it cleans it every morning but the amount of rubbish by the hotel appears to be no different from further away from the hotel.

The Club is very good but they seem to have over-booked the number of guests that are entitled to use it. As a consequence it is often difficult to get a table. The staff seem equally unhappy with the situation and there is a rumour that from November children under 12 are going to be banned which seems a little harsh for families that have already booked.

These minor issues should not detract from the way in which they have successfully combined the traditions of an old established hotel with a modern and efficient operation with amazing staff and very high standards.

Hotel grounds and facilities were pretty amazing. It’s not cheap but I did enjoy my stay. We went with my 3.5 year daughter and four month year old son. There was plenty for them to do, the beach was nice, the kids club was just OK and my daughter had her own room. The staff made quite a fuss of our son, and he seemed happy enough to relax next to the private pool. Outside is a nightmare for pushchairs access so we only made the night market once in 13 nights, which was a shame.

The staff are big on trying to upsell rooms to you, and I fell for that. We were having such a bad time in Cha Am we came to the hotel one day early and they only had a pool Villa available. Looking at the under occupancy I don’t think this was true but nevertheless it we took the pool Villa. We did move out to the Club rooms for a few nights but it just wasn’t the same so we went back to the Villas and paid the extra.

Personally I didn’t like the club rooms and thought they were attached to the worst pool in the place. This is probably down to personal taste, there was nothing wrong with the rooms but the Villas are just so much better. The pools nearer the beach looked spectacular but we didn’t spend any time there as we had our own pool. We wanted a pool view from the club room but it’s not really possible as there’s a hedge round, this was one of the other reasons we moved.

We took the Villas and Club package and the benefit of this was that we managed to avoid the battle for lunch and breakfast in the main Railway Restaurant. Instead we had a nice leisurely breakfast in the Club room in the Salathai Restaurant. The afternoon tea was pretty good, and the cocktails were a good start to the evening (which wasn’t that long as we had small children with us).

Upgrading to the Pool Villa was just a bit of luxury and the same day laundry service was a nice touch.

We travelled down from bangkok with Siam Resorts Limousines which I don’t recommend as they didn’t have the child seat we requested. The journey from Bangkok passed in no time though and driving inside the grounds had quite a wow factor.

We mainly stayed inside the resort due to being a family. This meant I didn’t have much of the Thai experience, but as the night market is about 5-10 minutes away you can have both.

Food was good, beach was good, the club room & package was nice, breakfast excellent (I had eggs Benedict most days), staff were nice, pool Villas very nice-I’d recommend to anyone who wants a treat.

Room Tip: the Club Experience was a good choice is you can agree a good price

Have stay here for 2 nights. It is a very lovely and ice place. Near the seaside and night market.
Travelled with 2 children aged 3 and 7. They loved the pools, kids club and keep asking for more time to stay there.

We were upgraded toa suite room. The room is very big with a pool and sea view. We loved the room very much.

Breakfast variety is good and nice.

The only displeasure I faced is the service. The staff at the lobby are polite and always wear a friendly smile. However, the staff at the front desk are not attentative enough to attend my problem.
