Like many others it seems, we really enjoyed our two-night stay at the Baan Duangkaew. By shopping around different websites we managed to book our rooms for around US$60 each per night.
It's a comfortably sized place, with a boutiquey feel about it. The bungalows are spacious, clean, well-equipped and gorgeous. We particularly appreciated the tea-making facilities and large mini-bar fridge so we could store and prepare our own drinks. The king-size bed was also great, though like most places in Asia, the mattress was quite firm. The bathroom was stylish and functional. The power in our room didn't automatically cut out when you removed your room key, which was a bonus if you wanted to leave your air-con running.
The bungalows are set up facing the two swimming pools, in jungle gardens which are very pretty and atmospheric. There is even a little reading sala in the gardens where you can sit and enjoy a book, magazine or the newspaper. One negative point: the log paths around the gardens can become slippery when it rains, as can the three or four steps up to the bungalows, as one of my travelling companions can attest. I will refrain from posting a photo of the bruise she sustained (on a rather delicate part of her anatomy) as a result of slipping on the stairs!
The swimming pools themselves were quite pleasant; not very deep or dramatically landscaped but lots of fun to splash around in. I don't really know why there are two, they're actually both quite similar. Perhaps one was added later on. There weren't all that many people using them when we were there, and we had lots of fun splashing about and cooling off. We went down to the beach (about 100m away) and had a look, but didn't swim there. Unless you love crabs and jellyfish, the pool was preferable! There are much better beaches elsewhere in Thailand.
The restaurant served delicious food at reasonable prices. I had a great Tom Kha Gai and one of the best lemon juices I've tried there the night we arrived. The included breakfast wasn't exactly amazing (not a buffet like in some of the big resorts) but it was perfectly OK.
One of the best things this place has going for it is the staff. They were, without exception, friendly and helpful. They provided useful information about Hua Hin and had a pile of brochures and maps on hand. We made the mistake of only booking two nights, and when we decided to stay an extra day in Hua Hin they didn't have enough room for us. The reception staff were really kind and rang around several other hotels to try and help us find an alternative. We also did our own research using the free internet terminals at reception and ended up booking a night at the Royal Asia Lodge, which was cheaper and closer to the town centre, but nowhere near as nice as the Baan Duangkaew.
That evening at the night market a girl approached us and asked if we had been staying at the Baan Duangkaew. It turned out that she was one of the reception staff, but she hadn't been on shift when we checked out and she wanted to make sure that we'd been able to find somewhere else to stay. I told her quite truthfully that we wished we could have stayed longer at the Baan Duangkaew, and that I would recommend it to anyone else who was visiting Hua Hin.
