“Average place to kitesurf.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Overestimated place for kitesurfing. Inconsistent rather light wind and a lot of jellyfish.

The stuff of the kiteshop i attended were very friendly and the prices reasonable. The prices for the kites are among the best.

But still the conditions in Hua Hin in general are not as good as i expected.

“Learn kitesurf in Huahin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

Review about KTA school in Huahin, and Huahin in general as spot where to learn kitesurfing for a beginner.

The staff is very friendly. I was able to show up at anytime and start a lesson on the spot without any booking, that was convenient.

The price is quite competitive I think compared to Europe or even China. 11000baht for a 3day course.
You should note though, that one day actually = 3 hours (I finished my 3 day course in 2 days by doing a double day the second day). But to be honest 3 hours as a beginner can be quite exhausting.

Very important : If possible get an instructor that speaks your mother tongue or make sure that the instructor speaks good English (a fair amount of my lesson time was waisted by miscommunication problems).

The school is pushing for students to take lessons instead of renting material.
At first I thought that after a 3 day course I would be able to rent a kite and practice on my own. Actually the school will ask that you master upwind riding before renting equipment. Within 9hours in Huahin (deep water, waves, wind sometime not strong enough), it's quite a challenge to make it.
Renting equipment costs the same than a 3h lesson, but if you go for the renting, you get the equipment for the whole day...

Wind : before getting there check out the wind forecast on Windguru. I would say that as beginner, ideally you want the wind to be around 15-20knots. Below 15knots would make things more challenging for a beginner (waterstart, relaunch).

Is Huahin the best place where to start learning kitesurf in Asia ?

When I was there , there were pretty big waves so I had to body drag a few 100m away from the shore before trying a waterstart. It was quite exhausting to get there through the waves. At this point communication was limited to the instructor talking in the walky talky and not being able to answer back and it was actually quite difficult to understand him with all the noise. In these conditions I would often end up losing the board or lose control of the kite with nobody to ask for help.

As a comparison, I live in hongkong where the main kitesurfing spot is shuihauwan, a bay with very shallow water. It makes it much easier to learn as your instructor can stand next to you, and you don't need to worry about loosing your board, fighting against the waves, etc. The problem is that wind is not that strong in hk most of the time...

There are a few other spots in Asia: Taiwan, Vietnam (Muine), the Philippines (Boracay), China (Hainan), Malaysia (Kuantan)... I don't which one is the best pick for a beginner but I hope that you will find this information helpful anyway. Good luck !

“paddle boarding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

They offer paddle boarding too......a surf board you stand on and paddle with a huge oar to move......not as easy as it sounds as it is all about balance but we soon got the hang of it. It cost THB300 per hour which is a bargain, however, the abundance of jelly fish put some of us off as we were scared of falling off the board and onto the jelly fish. They have a nice shaded area down on the beach for those not wanting to part take in the sport.

“Kitesurfing paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

With so much beach on offer, it was bound to be great. The instructors were great and they knew how to enjoy themselves too! I would definitely recommend, even if you haven't done it before you will love it!

“Let the Buyer Beware”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Lessons are very expense - 4,500 Bhat each - approximately two hours and only after the first lesson we discovered that you have to go through at least 3 lessons before you are allowed on a board - that would be 13,500 Bhat for a 1/2 hour ride on a kite board. No upfront advice about this and we aborted after one lesson.
