I recently had a 2 week stay at the Banyan Resort in a 2 bedroomed pool villa, which I would like to say was without issues but unfortunately it was not.
I would like to note that the hotel Manager did try to make amends for the issues experienced by providing a 2 night refund out of a 2 week stay and the Manager also said they would look into improving service so this gesture was greatly appreciated. I however still wish to let other travellers know what we experienced in the hope that service will improve.
The good points about these villas were:
On arrival we were given a much earlier than normal check-in which was wonderful after a long journey. The resort itself is nice with lovely streets and the interior of the villas are nice. Breakfast was good. The resorts courtesy bus is great and the older gentleman who drives this is very accommodating and pleasant.
Now for the unfortunate issues experienced:
The service from the reception staff was extremely poor, along with other staff across the resort (I realise we were given an early check-in but service throughout the holiday was appalling).
The free wifi was very disappointing–this worked intermittently and it depended whereabouts in the villa you were sat as to whether it decided it wanted to work or not. Also the wifi completely stopped working as soon as you put one foot out of the back doors to the pool so there would be no chance of sitting with something like an ipad around the pool.
The second bathroom had the most horrendous sewerage smell for the whole of the stay. I think this issue is present in most of the villas.
The interior of the pool villa was nice but the exterior of the villa is badly designed as there is no set area to sit around the pool, furthermore the villa which is advertised as a 2 bedroom villa for 4 adults only caters for 2 adults, with 2 uncomfortable chairs to sit on outside and nothing else. My question therefore was in a 1 bedroom villa which caters for 2 adults is only 1 chair and one bathrobe provided! When I asked reception to provide us with 2 more chairs or sun loungers (even though uncomfortable) we were told they did not have any more but would try to get us something to sit on. After 4 days of repeatedly speaking with the reception staff regarding this we still had not been provided with anything to sit on outside. Then on the 5th day 2 chairs appeared outside of our room with no cushions. I have attached a picture of the chairs provided to lounge on, which were to say the least extremely uncomfortable.
I realise the hotel have said they will try to address some of the issues experienced but if you like to relax on holiday in a villa around the pool unfortunately unless the hotel upgrade all outdoor furniture I would not recommend the Banyan as your first choice.
The description of the villas also state they are private –the villas outside areas are far from private as our sitting area overlooked the villa behinds pool not ours and the fence that should have been there to at least separate the villas, but not the view of the other villa was also half missing.
The kitchen in the villa is described as fully equipped –plates, cutlery, cups and glasses are all you receive if you would like any pans or utensils etc you are asked to contact guest services which was fair enough, but on doing this I was told that the resort only has 5 sets of pans/utensils for 84 villas and that they were all being used so I was unable to have them! I found this unbelievable 5 sets for 84 villas!
The food – Like I said breakfast was good. However the quality of the restaurant food was not so good. I had a club sandwich which I didn’t think you could go wrong with but it was awful, dried out and just not very nice. The chips that came with it had definitely seen better days as well. I did attempt to eat at the restaurant again, but again was very disappointed with the meal I was given.
Currency exchange – the hotel guest book in your villa states you can change currency at reception 24 hours a day –when I tried to do this I was told that Banyan do not actually exchange currency at all!
Grass cutting – I had read other reviews regarding the grass cutting before staying and have to be honest I thought how can you complain about grass cutting. On that note we had 4-5 gardeners with petrol strimmers for 6-7 hours a day over at least 7 days of our stay making horrendous noise. The noise was unbearable and like being on a building site. I realise the grass needs to be cut, but this ruined our stay and I certainly won’t be the last person to complain about this unless something changes.
Villa Safe – Our room safe inadvertently would not open even with our code on what turned out to be our last day of staying at Banyan, we therefore contacted guest services to ask if someone could come and open this for us. We were told someone would be sent –after another 2 calls to guest services and around 4.5 hours later someone was eventually sent to open the safe. Unfortunately unacceptable service – we should not have had to call guest services 3 times and wait 4.5 hours for this issue to be resolved.
All in all if you, like me, like to lounge around a peaceful pool in comfort and tranquilly on holiday which is what I was expecting - this is not the place for you. It seems the villas are largely booked by people who attend the Banyan golf course and maybe the resort feels they don’t need to cater for people who like to actually spend time in the villas they have booked and paid for, but hopefully they will try to take this into account for future guests who don’t stay here to golf. In summary if service is improved and issues are rectified Banyan will be a nice place to stay.
