“Basic rooms, all you need, very friendly staff! Feel at home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

We arrived in Chiang Rai early April. First we stayed in a luxurious guesthouse, beautifull old house, but since we did not feel at home there, we searched for another place.
We found Baan Bua Guesthouse and immediately at the first contact it felt good. We stayed in this guesthouse for 5 nights. Originally we planned to stay 2 or 3 nights, but since the place felt so good and friendly, and we needed some extra days to relax, we decided to stay longer. And it was worth it!
The rooms are clean and basic, all you need we you travel around. The guesthouse is located 5 min. walk from the centre of Chiang Rai (night market, etc), but surrounded by other houses so you do not hear any street or traffic noise. The place has a nice garden, in which you can hang out, eat and drink.
Tim, the owner, is so very friendly and helpfull! She can help you with booking trips (at regular prices, so no extra charge) or can give you advice on where to go. The staff is also very helpful. Since the place is rather small, you feel at home very easily.
The food is good, and the breakfast is as you might expect, enough american breakfast!.
Since we were very interested in the local food, she took us to the market to get the proper ingredients, explained all at the market about vegetables, herbs, etc, and later that day she and us together cooked a delicious local curry (for special occasions only, like Songkran). She even invited her mother to come over to help, since she only knows the exact recipe.
We had a great and relaxing stay in this guesthouse! Since we personally know how important reviews are, we write this review. If you would stay in Chiang Rai and you are looking for a clean, basic (with aircon!), very friendly and relaxing guesthouse with WiFi (in the garden only, as mentioned in the guesthouse), this place is a recommendation!!

Good things:
- The owner and all the staff are very nice and helpful.
- The American breakfast is excellent for Thailand. That means it is better than in most Thai places but still not as good as in Europe.

Bad things:
- Not all rooms have wifi. You need to take a room close to the office for that.
- The water pressure is very low. Showering takes a long time and properly flushing the toilet is a challenge!
- The way to the hostel is not completely paved. So when it rains your shoes or feet/flip flops will become dirty. And it rained a lot beginning of May when I was there.

Remarks:
- The quality of the rooms vary. Some have nice furniture some not. Some have a new silent aircon, some a noisy old one. So if you can choose between rooms have a look at more than one before you decide.

Close to the downtown bus station (2nd bus stop in downtown) and definitely within easy walking distance...and only 300 baht per night! Spotless rooms but quite small; some larger rooms are also available but more expensive (500 Baht). Nice quiet garden and very close to the center of town. We found fantastic breakfast options just a block north (turn right on main road) then a block west (left at first major intersection). Look for the yellow truck with the shingle roof for a huge full breakfast for 69 Baht, or another 50 meters for the best Khow Thom I've had in Thailand (huge servings, delicious pork) for 40 baht or directly across the street for any number of local specialties for 30-35 baht.
Just a couple of blocks away from a very large and nice covered local market where the people couldn't be nicer. Head north north west from Baan Bua.

Rates are now at b300, 400, 500. normally what comes of being featured in LP. Its a great place to stay in, on a small street behind the main road. From bus terminal, turn right to traffic light. You'll see Boots on your right and The Pizza Co across from it. Walk in that direction till you hit a small lane on left. Edison dept store will then be on your right. Walk this lane to the end and turn left. After 30-40m you'll see a small sign for Baan Bua on top left. Essential to book early.

This hotel is in a great location close to markets, cafes and attractions. Great garden setting for breakfast, planning your trip and having a cold beer after a long day sight seeing. The owner Tim (not sure of spelling) was extremely welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. She gave us lots of helpful tips and directions and can arrange trips and scooter hire. The rooms were very good value at 400 baht for a fan room. The only downside was the linen/ blanket was looking past their use by date. Overall great value for money. Tip - arrive early afternoon or book as lots of travellers were turned away later in the day as this hotel was popular.
