“A beautiful wat but not a patch on bkk's version.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013 via mobile

After seeing so many, wats become much of a muchness. They are all individually and uniquely beautiful. This one has lovely gardens but is quite small. There is currently building work going on so it is difficult to find peace with so much banging. I was there for only 10 minutes.

“Simply the best Wat ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

We have visited so many Wats but this one was quite breathtaking set in lush gardens with exotic flowers & a pond with huge catfish & turtles. The meditation hall contained a huge bronze Buddha but the piece de resistance is the Emerald Buddha. This is actually a replica as the original is in Bangkok after being housed in 4 other places, one of which was Chiangrai hundreds of years ago. We loved all the prayer bells & gongs in the garden. Definitely a must see when in Chiangrai.

“HOME OF THE JADE BUDDHA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

this is a must see while inchiang rai...it also has the Buddha Museum...it is quiet and run by young monks students...the grounds are beautiful and there are 4 or 5 temples that are truly outstanding..you can learn much about Buddhism in Thailand by visiting here...just outside there is a food market for locals that is outstanding as well...the fame Jade Buddha resides in this temple, so skip the others and go here...it is a short walk to the Golden Clock Tower as well...closes at 5 pm however and the tower show is at 7 pm so stop at Destiny Cafe for some dinner or desert before the Clock Tower show, or visit the market there..

“Enchanting Temple Complex”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

This is a very beautiful and ancient temple, on a large site which includes other interesting attractions.
One reason this temple is so revered by Thais is the Emerald Buddha, which had been placed inside the temple’s Chedi at some time in its history, and was only discovered when lightning struck in 1434 and destroyed the Chedi, revealing its treasure.
The original is now in Bangkok, and there is a replica in its place here at Wat Phra Kaeo, however, this is still a visually stunning display and worth a visit.

An interesting museum which contains hundreds of historical and religious artefacts is also located on site, as well as the magnificent main prayer hall with its huge bronze Buddha, and a soothing water feature containing turtles, fish and other marine creatures.
The grounds are very well maintained and a horticulturalists delight, boasting many magnificent trees, bamboos, and exotic plants, including garden beds planted by the monarchs of Sweden and Norway.

Open every day from 8.00am until 5.00pm with free admission, it is definitely a must see in Chiang Rai.
