“Great little guesthouse in convenient location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

We stayed at Baan Malai Guesthouse for 2 nights in January and were very happy with the place. For the short time we were there, I wanted to stay in town, but had a hard time choosing a place. I really did not want to be commuting back and forth to the outskirts of the city, I wanted to stay in a place that would be both comfortable and convenient to the downtown area. We found both in staying at Baan Malai.

The room was very comfortable, and felt more like a small hotel with modern amenities than a modest guest house. The owner was present, and gave us a warm welcome, and was helpful with advice and recommendations. The location was terrific – on a road with many small guest houses and other residences, it was a short walk to the main street and to the night bazaar.

Breakfast was toast, coffee and fruit, and was more than adequate for our needs. The quality of the room and ambience of the place far surpassed our expectations.

Chiang Rai is not an especially attractive city, and after seeing the night market and clocktower, I wouldn’t spend a lot of time in the downtown area; for the brief time we were there, however, Baan Malai was perfect.

Good choice of stay in Chiang Rai!
Locate in a quiet alley near by main street.About 5 minutes walk to night bazzar, bus terminal, restaurants and stores. Convenient and quiet !
Staffs are also kind to everyone and I got a cute keyring from owner Toon when checked out.
Even for solo female traveler it's a safe place to stay.

Shower water may not be hot enough but actually it's same in other guest houses which I stay in northern Thai. You could rent motorcycle directly from guesthouse and hanging out around this lovely small city.

Definitely a smart choice of budget accom in Chiang Rai. Love it.

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor room if you have large luggage.

Stayed with friends here for one night. Guest House is near new, well kept with clean bathroom and a good sized room. Hosts were very friendly and took the time to speak with us on a couple of occasions during our very short stay. Self service breakfast with really nice fresh coffee. Would have love to have seen fresh milk with it as a nice touch but no big deal.
Downside was, despite clear non smoking notices in rooms, our room was stale with cigarette smoking. Disappointing considering that it is not hard to step outside for a ciggy and not spoil the room for other guests and respect the requests of the owners.

Room Tip: Upper rear floor would be best.

The staff and owner of this amazing little place are so welcoming. Clean, quiet, spacious, beautifully appointed rooms, mountain views, could have stayed forever! Excellent coffee and basic breakfast, extremely attractive décor and gardens complete with pet rabbits and beautiful orchids. Easy walk to town and markets one of which has an excellent restaurant in the centre with staged entertainment in the evening. We really loved our stay here.

Stayed here for 4 nights in October. Newer guest house with large clean rooms, A/C, Hot Water and refrigerator. On a very quiet street in residential area close to restaurants and night market. I was here for the Saturday Night Walking Market and it is a must see if you are in town. Very crowded, but great food and bargains. The hotel staff is very friendly and set me up with a great walking tour my first day. Breakfast is toast, bananas, coffee or tea on a nice little patio overlooking a garden. If you want a bigger breakfast found several places close by that were very cheap and good. Great stay and you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: I had room on 3rd floor and you have to take the stairs which was not an issue for me, but if you ar...

First the only drawback of this guesthouse: no kitchen, so no food to order and a very simple breakfast (toast, butter, jam, coffee, banana).

All the rest is just great. Best guesthouse so far! Very clean, spacious rooms. Good bathroom. Friendly staff. Cold drinks available (can of Leo Beer, 50 baht).

Very central location, and every taxidriver knows where it is.

Conclusion: very good!

We had a discount via agoda.com, 1200 reduced to 670 baht. Great deal! Low season ;).

This guesthouse has previously received plenty of positive critics, and note of those are exaggerated. We were staying here for a few days in August 2013 and enjoyed ourselves very much. As the guest house was not fully booked, we could even get double and in one case a triple room, resp. for 500 Baht per person and night; including complementary breakfast. I am not sure, though, whether this reduced rate (100 Baht less than the normal rate) was negotiated by our Thai friend who made the booking for us, or whether we could also have got it as foreign tourists. It is very good price for value even at the regular 600 Baht in any case. Curiously they even take credit cards.

Rooms were tidy, spacious, and quiet at night. WIFI is free and works perfectly all around the house. Plenty of restaurants, night bazaar, bus station in the vicinity but still far enough away so one will not be bothered by the noise. Parking is no problem in this quiet sidestreet, either. Itwasa bit difficult to reach by car from south of town, due to construction work on a main road in the centreof CR, but this will now probably have been sorted out.

The owner speaks good English and is very helpful, has even arranged to bring us to an excellent and inexpensive laundry service in the immediate neighborhood. We paid 150 Baht for 3 kgs of laundry and had our stuff back after 8 hours,..
I could now go on, repeating all the positive feedback that others have left, but Ithink this is not necessary. I will definitely stay here again next time!

Room Tip: We had roooms in the 1st floor facing the backyard. They were very quiet and provided with balconies...
