“Only worth an hour or so!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Getting to the Black House is simple - go to Chiangrai Bus Station and get the local bus from stand 5 or 6 (check with conductor) it costs only 20 Baht one way about half an hour. To return cross the road from where you got off the bus and flag a bus down to go back to Bus Station. I have included some photo's of a shortcut when you have got off the bus to get to The Black House - along the side of the wall are some planks - go across and follow the grassy path - it leads straight to the site. We were told of this by the bus conductor.

Entrance is free..

The Black House is closed between 12 & 1 pm but does have an arty exhibit and a small shop - + benches to wait out of the sun and clean toilets.

The small area is a collection of buildings filled with mostly skins / horns / shells - it can be walked around easily within an hour. The setting is lovely with lots of trees / shade / grass. The exhibits are a bit different and quirky - several of the buildings are closed but there is still enough open to get a good feel for the place. It would be ideal to do The White Temple and The Black Temple in one day to see how really different they are from each other.

Please tick box if this was of help to you - Many thanks

“Inspiring and challenging art & architechture”

Make what you will of this interesting museum, art gallery and temple .
You will need a guide to find it as it is 10km north of the city, but well worth the trip.

“Worth the trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

The reason you are travelling in Northern Thailand is to enjoy the culture right? Well, The Black House will certainly give you something very different to what you will be expecting. We assumed, by the name, that this was one temple, but we soon found out that the grounds were scattered with many different and interesting buildings. In one, you find great tables laden with snake skins, chairs made from horns and the most amazing building techniques (look up at the ceiling). Every building you enter, offers something bizarre and interesting. Make sure you go to the Male toilet for some humour.
Our children were delighted to play with the tame Boa Snakes they had there, which gave us 2 the chance to have a good look around. Be prepared to spend a good part of the day to take your time browsing as there is lots to see. You need to be in the mood for museums and art to enjoy this place for what it is. If you are in Chiang Rai, it would be a real shame to miss this and apart from the fare to and from it's totally free entry!

“You need to be very interested in art to find this interesting”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

We heard that this is the works of a famous Thai artist, and I think you need to be seriously interested in a bit odd artworks to find this place interesting. If you are not you might find the colletion of buildings, skulls, snake skins, toilets and other strange rather boring

“Better than the White Temple, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

again we are not sure calling it a temple is too accurate. It's a showcase for another talented artist and the exhibits are spine tingling and creepy. Make light of it with children who might be a little squeamish with lots of dead things, but overall, well worth a visit.
