“Bizarre wat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

3 or 4 stars (ended up at 4 ). Bizarre artist wat. Great work with animal bones, skin, skulls, horns, etc. Most furniture and musical instruments. No fee to enter this place. We spend 45 minutes there walking and looking to every detail. Lot to see in different buildings (houses). Not everything is open for public. Not easy to find when you go by (motor)bike. There is no sign and we missed the street 2 times. But people are willing to help you and point you in the right direction. 10 kilometer from chiang rai (south). just a few kilometer after the airport crossing. about 24 kilometer from the white tempel (rong khun). Good combination with rong khun and buddha cave when you rent a motorbike.

“Interesting,bizarre...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

We stopped here as part of a tour and found it somewhat peculiar. I can appreciate the artistic license but found the artist's collection of skins and horns a bit bizarre. The buildings are an interesting slant on the traditional and are all painted black. It is out of the way and would be difficult to get to. I would not bother to make the effort.

“Different macabre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

I visited the black house today. I was very fortunate and I met the artist Thawan Duchanee created the black house. He is in his late 70 s and he is widely travelled speaks lots of different languages and has collected various animal skins and skulls from around the world.
The grounds have amazing buildings which house various antiques, skins and furs. Wonderful stone sculpture arranged in various forms .The buildings are delightful with carved teak doors. And sculptures .
You can see some of the artists students working on the massive slabs of teak carving brilliant designs. A great place to visit

“This place was wild!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

Ever see the movie The Thirteenth Warrior (based on Eaters of the Dead')? They could film a sequel here. Animal skulls, 25+ foot long python skins, on table tops across the 'temple', amazing wood sculpture, images of Buddha and accessory touches reminiscent of tribal Africa. Dark wood; phallic obsessions in the gift shop as well as handbags with croc/alligator heads. This place was dang interesting, and a welcome feature of a Chiang Rai day trip.

“Dark and mysterious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

The Black House (Baan Dam) is among the most odd and mysterious houses I’ve ever seen. It is dark and surreal and it’s not only one building, but a collection of many structures and weird things.

The artist has a specific fascination for animal skulls, horns and skins. It’s decorated with bizarre furniture created from bones of exotic animals.
