“Great YWAM missionary conference location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

We stayed four days. The room was very nice, The conference rooms were large and comfortable, the food and service were great. There were about 450 of us, and we were well taken care of. The pool is nice too, the beach is not as nice as in Phuket where we live. The only thing we didn't like was expensive wi-fi. 10 baht a minute 450 baht maximum per day but we used two I Pads and were charged the maximum on each one even though we signed in with one user name.

The Holiday Inn Cha Am

We stayed at this hotel in January on a 2 week holiday staying at the Holiday Inn which is about 3Km’s outside of Cha Am on the coast towards Hua Hin. I hope this report proves useful to you, it will probably be quite long as I like to cover as much as possible, but if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Firstly I would like to start with our arrival at Bangkok airport, we have been to Thailand numerous times, but this was the first occasion when we had to arrange our own transport to our Hotel. We researched the matter and asked questions and were told that we should be paying no more than 2500 baht for our trip to the hotel. When we arrived there was an executive hire for 4000 baht by luggage collection but we went down to the exit and were pointed towards the taxi area. We were very tired after a long flight and that’s when our problems started. I have met very few obnoxious Thais but this Taxi guy was one of them and insisted we would have to pay 4000 baht to the hotel, I refused as we could have got a Limo for that price and eventually we agreed 3200 baht but only because we were so tired. In future I will book before we get there. Thailand never used to be like that, but the rip off merchants have clearly moved in.

The Hotel itself
To my mind this is a three star that with some effort could be a four star. It is very tired in many areas not least in the seating in the reception area looking towards the pool, they had the kind of chairs that your granny would have, old, battered and rather dirty. Otherwise the reception area is clean and airy. This is also the first time we have found reception staff who were to say the least sultry. In the past they have always looked up when we have passed by, but these put their heads down and only spoke if approached and were then not overly friendly, most un Thai like.

Pools
There are two good sized pools with a good number of sun beds, the hotel was barely a quarter full when we were there but still people were reserving beds!! We chose the quieter of the two pools which was a very good size and the pool attendant was excellent. Towels are provided. Bizarrely though, there is no poolside bar area although girls did come round occasionally selling ice cream and soft drinks, they didn’t however seem to mind you taking your own stuff to the pool area.

Grounds
The Hotel itself is set in vast grounds which are generally well maintained, if you are a butterfly spotter you will have quite a delight. I did some bird spotting, but that’s for another time. There is a large crazy golf course as well as tennis and squash courts for the more energetic amongst you.

Eating and drinking at the hotel
The first weekend we were there (bank holiday) each morning two restaurants were open for breakfast as loads of Thais came down from Bangkok for the weekend, but once they had gone and it went quiet just one was open by the main pool. We only had one evening meal there the first night we got there and it was probably the worst meal we had all the time we were there. It was luke warm for some reason and we should have sent it back but we were tired and it was our first night so we ate some of it and retired to bed. There is a pub type bar at the hotel but we never used it and I’m not too sure anyone else did either! I believe there are several restaurants within the hotel, but we chose to eat out which was a great decision and more about that later.

Breakfast
We booked room only, but when we got there we were offered breakfast for 250 baht each per day (about £5 each) which we took up as my wife likes the security of knowing where she can get her coffee fix in a morning. In hindsight, I would not go for this option again, breakfast was ok, there is a reasonable buffet choice, but you can get an excellent breakfast from numerous places in the village close by for far less money.

Bedroom
We were in a superior room and considering how quiet the hotel was, we were somewhat disappointed to find they had put us in a room with a glorious view of a tree! Perhaps we should have asked to move, but we just couldn’t be bothered and to me it just summed up the managerial style of this hotel. That said, the room itself was ok, there was sufficient room with two three-quarter beds and ample storage space. The bathroom was OK with bath and shower over, but be warned the shower was Ok one moment but cold the next and then scalding, so if you take kids be aware. The room had a fridge in which you could put your own drinks if you wished, a good size safe and tea and coffee making facilities. There was also a TV with a reasonable variety of channels. The room was clean and linen and towels changed regularly although some of the towels were somewhat rough and had seen better days.

Other facilities
There was a gym but it was just a small room with a few pieces of equipment and a tadge disappointing. There were snooker tables and table tennis and a kids club and play area. There was a spa where you could get a massage and other treatments. They do a currency exchange but the rate is pretty poor, to change cash it’s a good idea to go into Hua Hin or Cha Am itself as there was no where in the village to do so.

Beach and sea
The beach is quite a long expanse, but does not go out very far and appeared to slope quite quickly into the sea which was often quite choppy and red flags went up which many idiots ignored. There were jelly fish signs up and we saw what appeared to be jelly fish washed up on the beach on several occasions, but I have no idea if they were poisonous ones or not. If you go onto the beach and then walk left you come to several small eating and drinking places as well as numerous massage places, which were great during the day, but if you go on the beach at night, be prepared to be bitten to death by the sand flies!! You could do horse riding on the beach and get towed along by a jet ski if you are into that sort of thing otherwise it was good for sand castle building!

Eating out
This was the best part of the holiday. Out of the front of the hotel and turn left takes you into the village, it is no more than 2-3 minutes walk and is made up of one main street of about 150 meters which has 15 or more eating places and probably the same number of Tailors!! There are also a few bars a couple of supermarkets including a 7/11 and the usual massage places. There is also a basic chemist which is open sometimes. There are several ATM’s including one right opposite the hotel where there is also a small supermarket. You do now get charged for withdrawing cash at ATM’s there now so take out big amounts to cut your costs.

In the village you can also get your washing done at various places and the choice of eating places is good. The outstanding one for us was the Mermaid (first on the left from the Hotel) the food here was excellent and you must try the shrimp cocktail and the chicken curry with steamed rice, they were oh so good and don’t forget to finish off with a lemon pancake wow. The young lady who has just taken it over is a delight and also has the Coconut bar a few doors along. The one night my wife had chicken with a lemon toping, she got two massive chicken portions, beautifully cooked and all for about £2!! We couldn’t beat this place but the family restaurant which is bigger was ok as was Sahktong. We went to the Plattoo one lunchtime but the staff were so miserable we didn’t bother trying it at night time.

The Village really was a bonus and made the holiday for us. I must also make mention of Harrys bar owned by a Brit called Alan (his son is called Harry) who did a wonderful Latte and did marmite and cheese sandwiches!! He also does Pizzas which looked really nice. A good place to watch sport if you are that way inclined and he kept me up to date with the cricket scores. Over the road from Harrys was a little coffee bar and massage place which did the best hot chocolate I have had in a long time and the Latte was excellent. There is an internet place a few doors up which was reliable and cheap.

I must mention Mr POK’s, worth at least one visit. Out of the hotel and go right, follow the road (well lit) for about 15 minutes walk past several hotels and then on a sharp left hand bend turn right and its just ahead of you. He is a real character and the food was ok although you may not always get what you ordered as he’s so keen to chat he forgets what people have ordered at times.

We went to the night market in Cha Am the one night but the wife hated it as it is very busy and they sell loads of things that you would probably only eat if you were on that ridiculous TV jungle programme. We also went to Hua Hin which we know having stopped near there last year and once again had a very good meal at the Siam restaurant.

Would we go there again?
A difficult one, there wasn’t too much wrong with the place except that it is really tired and needs a lift, but there are better places to stop at in my opinion. It would be ideal for a golfing holiday or as a few days stop over if exploring the country, but I’m not sure I would do a 14 night holiday again there, but there again, the village was great so perhaps we will at some stage. And the weather? Marvellous, we had one overcast day when it dropped to about 28 degrees but we put up with it!!

Taxi to and from the airport
We got a taxi back to the airport with Happy Taxi service from the Village Tel -- for 2500baht the rate when we were there was around 48 baht to the English pound. Nice car, good driver and reliable.

Thank you for sharing your frank and honest feedback. We were delighted to hear you enjoyed your guest room experience. Your comments regarding the shower temperature fluctuations were taken on board and I am pleased to share with you this problem has since been rectified and we can assure you of a comfortable shower experience.

We were very disappointed to read our colleagues did not make you feel welcome, this is certainly not reflective of the Thai hospitality and the high service standards we aim to achieve. We have recently completed a new Guest Service Training program with all our colleagues to ensure our service is friendly, uncomplicated and seamless.

The Lobby Bar furniture is currently being re-upholstered and looks re-freshed!

Regarding your Restaurant Experience. Sakuna Restaurant is our main dining room for Breakfast and we have been working very hard in changing our breakfast product. This is also our traditional Thai Restaurant for dinner offering many traditional Thai Dishes.

Then we have Terrazzo which is our traditional Italian Restaurant which is located right on the beach.

Once again thank you so much for sharing your honest and detailed feedback. We hope we can welcome you back to our Resort in the future.

With kind regards,

The Management Team

My friend and I stayed here at the end of Feb/beginning of March - and had a fab time. We decided we'd have a 2 week girly chilled out hol & that's exactly what we got.

After a gruelling 24 hours travelling we pulled up outside the hotel & I can honestly say I've never been happier with a hotel choice, it looked amazing.
Check in was speedy, we were shown to our room (we were staying in the normal wing) - and again, I was blown away... It was really really nice.
Im told the hotel has been upgrading it's rooms - and we were lucky enough to get one of these...
(We went for a nosey round the 'superior' wing & our room was far nicer than those!!)
Our room was round the side of the hotel so we had lovely views of the gardens & a partial sea view - we spent many evenings sat on the balcony chatting/enjoying the scenery... We also spotted a large lizard who spent most of his days lazing in the streams running through the gardens.

The hotel - amazing, the views from exception are out of this world.
The staff are really helpful too... We needed extra plugs in our room so asked reception where we could perhaps buy an extension, she said she'd see what she could do: 2minutes later house keeping arrived at our room with a free extension for us...

The pool/s:
The main pool is huge!! Surprisingly warm too :)
Just to mention the average age of guests staying at the hotel seemed to be 60+, we're both in our 20's so bought ourselves a couple of lilo's & made our own fun... Thankfully No one seemed to mind.
They (the other older guests) also put on they're own aqua aerobics class which u could join in with if u wanted to.

Location:
Brilliant!! Close to all the local restaurants & shops.
The hotel is also right on the beach - which has the usual sellers... But haggle a little & bag yourself a bargain.

The Restaurants:-
The restaurants in the hotel are very good, but also very expensive... U can eat out for half the price in the village - we found Family restaurant to be very good, and also friendly.

Trips:-
We managed to squeeze a couple in... We went to see some of the temples (amazing), trekking through the jungle - hard work but worth it to see the waterfall, & finally elephant riding... Which made our trip!!

It was our 1st trip to Thailand & we were both unsure of what to expect - we had a fantastic hol & would totally recommend this hotel :)

I have just returned from an 8 night stay in this hotel. Although I travelled alone the friendliness and hospitality of the staff meant I never felt out of place. My room was spacious and had everything I needed. All areas of the hotel were clean and well presented. If you can't be bothered to leave the hotel (there are shuttle buses to Hua Hin and Cha am) the restaurants are good value serving a variety of dishes. The spa is also worth a visit. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking for a relaxing break.

Room Tip: If possible upgrade to a room with a pool/sea view

Myself and my husband in our 30's stayed at the hotel for 9 nights and were very impressed with the hotel rooms, the first few nights we stayed at the back of the hotel and the room was amazing superior room which was really modern however due to refurb works (drilling noise) we asked to change rooms on our 4th night and were given a deluxe room with pool view which again was an amazing room but more of the Thai influence so you pay more for pool/seaview but room quality not as great. The staff were very attentive ad welcoming and as the last review states the band were great. Only issue we had was that when we booked we thought the hotel was on Chaam beach which it is not, we went into Hau Hin most nights which is only 25 mins away and the hotel provide a cheap shuttle bus. Chaam beach is about 15 mins drive. The hotel is located in a lovely seculded area and there is a small village around the corner but as we were there low season it was not busy - am advised it is very busy in high season. I could not fault this hotel other than the location : )

living in BKK and go to cha am quite often, decided to try the holiday inn, was not expecting much - what a fool, the serviceand the staff are fantastic , was very very impressed, yes okay hotel is massive and needs a bit of updating - which is happening but then again i liked the retro aspect which is in vogue is it not? the food also was very good and the bread amazing - sometimes a bit difficult in thailand to please us westerners with bread, but not at the holiday inn ! also would like to mention the singers who were fantastic. i enjoyed my weekend and will be popping back am sure!!

stayed for 8 nights. Peaceful - very few guests (low season) so no problem getting a sunbed. Smart large room and balcony overlooking sea and pool. Extremely comfortable bed. Staff were all friendlly and helpful. Everywhere was clean - heard no complaints from other guests. The little village outside hotel had some good cheap restaurants but the food a bit samey. The hotel restaurant was of course more expensive but very tasty food and good value anyway. A great place to stay after a trip to the cities and Chaam night market was a great authentic experience (rather than all the tourist tat you can get at Hua Hin or Bangkok)
