“Design, relaxation and superb food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2009

I (32 year old female) stayed in Alila Cha-am with my mother for 9 nights in February. We were absolutely impressed with every aspect of our stay. When we were there, the hotel was not busy, however, it is the kind of place which oozes tranquility even if it would have been more crowded.

Highs:
- impeccable service (we never heard "no" or the slightest of hesitation on our requests)and attention to detail. We really liked the rose water sprays and cold scented towels you got upon arrival at one of the pools or the beach. Water and fruit sticks were provided complimentary throughout the day. Every night after dinner, you came back to your room where a nice jazzy cd was playing, candles were lighted and a small snack and card showing the activities of the next day were provided.
- food: in some recent reviews I read several complaints on the food quality and portions. Although the portions are not the largest (but we almost never took a three course, as two would suffice), the quality of the food was really high. The menu was varied enough for 9 nights, offering Thai and Italian/mediterranean dishes. Also here a lot of flexibility was offered: you could eat whatever you like, whenever you like and where you like. The executive chef Joel Wilkinson was very attentive and catered for all my special wishes due to my dietary requirements. We also really enjoyed having lunch on the beach, which was served also in an impeccable, classy way. Although wines and coffee were not cheap, this was compensated by the very reasonable food prices (f.e. a pasta or Thai curry for about EÛR 6). Breakfast was very varied (in principle a-la-carte but if the hotel is busy/catering frorgroups, it is presented buffet style) and offers all the 'Western' choices besides the more Thai oriented options. Three types of breakfast plans were included in our room package, but when I ordered outside of these plans from the menu, this was at no extra charge. Besides orange juice each day another fruit juice is on offer and can be refilled as much as you like.
- design and comfort: the design of the hotel is very modern and minimalistic, however without compromising on comfort. The beds in the room as well as the loungers by the beach and the pools are very comfortable. We also enjoyed the music system and rain shower a lot as well as the high quality and lovely smelling amenities provided, such as shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. We were upgraded to a deluxe terrace room, and really liked that we could have an early morning tea (facilities provided in the room) outside. As the previous reviewer said, the terraces at the 'inside' are best, also because (building 2 and 5) you are literally 5 steps away from the Chill Pool.
- SPA: the Alila Signature massage was one of the best massages I ever had (and I had several in Bali and for example also in the Como Shambala Spa of Parrot Cay, Turks & Caicos). After your treatment you are offered a small champagne sorbet, to sink in the realxed atmosphere a little more. Prices are reasonable, also of the products offered for sale (f.e. a peppermint foodcreme for about EUR 5).

Lows:
Although I can hardly think of any lows, I might mention that during the last nights of our stay more and more bugs visited our room at night, and they seemed not be too bothered with the insect repellant spray. Therefore, I think the hotel should consider to place nets around the beds. As a final point, the wc is in the bathroom with only a glass door separating it from the rest of the bathroom. Maybe for couples this is less of a problem (although I can imagine that one would want some privacy anyhow), but a partly shaded door would be recommendable in my view.

All in all we had a fantastic stay. I would recommend the hotel to anyone who loves being pampered in a design and tranquil setting. I saw some comparisons to Aman resorts and having visited Amanyara I can say that although the architecture is maybe even more impressive at Amanyara as is it location, the service, comfort and overall quality of the experience at Alila was at least of the same level as Amanyara's. And there is a big price difference...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2009

My husband and I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary by spending 10 nights at Alila Cha-am. I found out about this hotel through Conde Naste Traveller's 2008 Hot List and read the Trip Advisor reviews. We were attracted to the hotel's affordable luxury on the beach within a short driving distance of Bangkok.

Our trip to Cha-am began after a fabulous stay at the Millenium Hilton in Bangkok (see my other review). We had arranged a transfer with our travel agent and enjoyed an easy two hour scenic drive to Cha-Am, passing through several smaller cities and villages along the way.

We arrived at Alila Cha-Am mid-afternoon and were immediately blinded (literally!) by the grand entrance-- a very wide marble staircase flanked with water fountains leading up to the reception desk. Upon arrival, we were greeted with cool towelettes and drinks and a warm welcome from the visiting Alila COO. We were impressed by the long, narrow view of the property, the Asian inspired modern design of the buildings leading up to the ocean in the distance. The design is based on rectangles, long pools of water, teak wood, caged rocks, and lots of stairs to give the long, narrow property some depth.
After reception, one of the hotel staff guided us to our room and finished the check-in in our room while explaining all of the high-tech features of the room.(Apple TV, free WiFi, surround sound speakers in the bedroom and bath, various settings for the lighting and airco, the rain forest shower, etc). My first reaction to the room was a bit mixed. I loved the high-tech features; the spacious bathroom with double sinks, a soaking tub, an amazing and unique rain forest shower that takes up the entire bathroom (no joke); and the very comfortable bed with high quality linens. The room was very well-appointed, clean and spacious. However, our room only had one "wall" of windows and the other walls and floor were grey concrete (part of the minimalist design), invoking a cold, stark and prison-like feeling. Because of the minimalist design and decor, the rooms have very basic furnishings (except for the bed which is very comfortable), in very basic colours (grey, brown, light wood with orange accents), and only a small area rug under the seating area. Another disappointment was our "private" terrace-- we had paid more for a deluxe terrace room and found that these rooms were all on the ground level, did not offer any scenic views, and did not offer any privacy around the terraces. Our terrace was situated between two storage units used by the staff and faced a golf cart path, grassy field and then a long wall. So, when I sat on the terrace reading a book, I was basically in the "path" of the staff members accessing these two storage units and the golf cart.
After spending one night in this particular room, we did a bit of investigating and learned that the room across the hall from ours was vacant-- this was a corner room, in the building closest to the beach, with two walls of windows and a terrace facing inward and surrounded by tall hedges (still no scenic view, but a bit more privacy because the hedges). We requested to see the room and then the staff kindly arranged for us to change rooms. The room was exactly the same as our first room in terms of decor and features, but offered far more sunlight, a distant view of the beach and ocean and a slightly more private terrace.
For anyone booking a deluxe terrace room, note that you will be staying on the ground floor and that only the rooms facing inward (inward=the pool and common areas) are landscaped with privacy hedges. The rooms facing outward do not offer any privacy, are situated on the golf cart path and with no views (unless you call a wall or grassy field and then a wall a “view”). I also noticed that these terraces are considerably smaller than the terraces on that face inward. The standard rooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors and all have small balconies-- they don’t offer much seating space, but they are actually more private and have better views than the deluxe terrace rooms! Another point to consider when staying on the ground level is that, because of the very minimalist design, the common entry and stairwell generates a lot of noise-- every little noise echoes. I slept with the air-co on high and with ear plugs but was often awoken by other guests (especially those with children) and the staff in the stairwell.
I also had a tour of one of the pool villas, which are similar in style and decor, but offer even more space with two separate buildings (one with bedroom and bath and one with living room-dining room-desk) and a private pool. We decided not to upgrade to a pool villa because we didn't need the extra space nor the private pool (the resort was very quiet for most of our stay so we often had the pools to ourselves anyway!). However, I suspect this is an ideal solution for families or people who want to pay a premium for privacy when the resort is busy.
The resort's common areas include a beautiful spa, Chill Pool, Red Bar, a library, two restaurants, an Active Pool and a beach leading up to the ocean. We enjoyed a couple massages and a pedicure at the spa and were really impressed with the staff, the treatments and the facilities. We booked couples Signature Massages and enjoyed a private steam room in one of the dressing rooms, followed by a large jacuzzi pool (in their relaxation area) prior to a treatment. As there weren't many other guests, we never had any trouble scheduling treatments so we tried a few different treatments and highly recommend the Signature massage. The spa also offers free yoga classes four mornings a week from 8 to 9 a.m., but we did not partake as we're not early risers!
Next to the space is the Chill Pool, which is reserved for adults only. We often had the pool area to ourselves, enjoyed the very comfortable beds and the terrific service from the staff in the Red Bar. This pool area is indeed very chilled and is a great place for quiet relaxation. Red Bar is next to the Chill Pool is a very hip space for cocktails and light bites-- it was almost always empty during our stay, except during afternoon tea which is free for guests from 4-5 p.m. daily. The tea consists of tea, coffees and juice served with tea sandwiches and pastries. Next to Red is a small library with two Apple computers for free internet, games, books and magazines.
After the Library, you reach the dining area. The resort offers two restaurants, both serviced by the same kitchen. Motion is on the ground level and offers both indoor and outdoor dining next to the Active Pool. Motion is open for all three meals, where as Cloud's Loft (above Motion, overlooking both the Chill Pool and Active Pool) is only open for lunch and dinner. The lunch menu is the same in both Motion and Cloud's Loft, and also if you order from the beach or pool. We had very good experiences with the staff-- they were very attentive, flexible and responsive. The cocktail menu and wine menu are quite extensive and offer a great variety—all reasonably priced considering the premium on wine and hard liquor!
Our main "complaint" with the kitchen was the quality of the food. We had a few occasions where we sent food back to the kitchen because it was cold, didn’t taste right or wasn't prepared properly. We generally had good experiences with breakfast and lunch, but our dinners were often disappointing. In Motion, the dinner meal is the same as the lunch menu (international plus Thai), so this gets a bit boring after a long stay. Cloud’s Loft had a very limited menu (Mediterranean)- we ate their once, but we really disappointed in the food so decided not to go back. Cloud’s Loft is also twice as expensive as Motion even though all of the food comes from the same kitchen. This quality of the food is really the only area of improvement for the hotel and, when I passed this feedback along to the management, they informed that they are working on a new menu and improving the quality of their cooking.
One of our most favourite experiences during our trip was dining on the beach in a private beach cabana—it was really a stunning, romantic dinner by the ocean. Perfect for celebrating our first anniversary! We also enjoyed the Chinese New Year celebration, which included a buffet served by the Chill Pool. The quality and variety of the food was quite good that night, and we enjoyed the local entertainment of Chinese acrobatics and colourful lions.
As you walk from the restaurants towards the ocean, you then pass the 7 villas, the Active Pool, and eventually, reach the beach area. The Active Pool is for all guests so this is where the (few) children swam. Along one side of the pool is a landscaped hedge which zig-zags through single and double pool beds (all very high quality) with umbrellas and small tables. Between the pool and the beach, there’s a large deck with additional sun beds. On the beach, you’ll find more sun beds with umbrellas and private beach cabanas. The beach front is quite narrow, but very clean and private (although the beach is not entirely private as passersby may walk along the shore). The beach area is always staffed with at least two waiters. The service was incredible—upon approaching the beach, the staff would rush over to help us get situated and bring us bottled water and face spritzer. They regularly came by with fresh fruit skewers and fresh water bottles. They took our orders for lunch and served us lunch and drinks at our sun beds or cabanas. My only suggestion for improvement at the beach area is to offer a small washroom facility as you have to trek back to your room or to the lavatory near the Library whenever nature calls.
The resort offers several other free perks to keep you entertained. We took advantage of the free mountain bikes to cycle through the nearby fishing village and Cha-Am. It’s a very short and easy ride, although there’s not much to see or do in Cha-Am. We also took the free shuttle to Hua-Hin (offered twice a day) to walk around the city, see the night markets and enjoy an evening dinner. Definently worth the trip for dinner, but we were quite glad to return to our luxurious, quiet resort afterwards! Other free activities include: yoga lessons 4x week, badminton or volleyball, afternoon tea in Red, the use of the Library.
In addition, the resort arranges daily excursions and activities (prices vary) in case laying by the pool or at the beach isn’t enough for you. You can do as much or as little as you want to do and all of the excursions and activities are quite unique (e.g. , cooking lessons, cocktail shaking lessons, serving food to Monks at dawn, visits to local caves, bike ride through the fishing village, etc.). I was content staying at the resort every day, but my husband played a couple rounds of golf at nearby Black Mountain. The front desk staff arranged his transfers and tee team and he was very pleased with their service and the quality of the course.
All in all, we were very pleased with our stay at Alila Cha-am. The staff were incredibly thoughtful and willing to go above and beyond to make us comfortable. They took special efforts for our first anniversary celebration, graciously arranged our room change, and brought us a DVD player and some extra DVDs to enjoy during our long stay. Nightly turn-down service always included a special drink (usually a tea) and biscuits, and the staff made our anniversary evening extra special. Th staff really made our stay unforgettable. Thanks to their service and the beautiful surroundings, we truly relaxed and enjoyed our long beach holiday in Thailand. I’m now hooked on the Alila concept and can’t wait to go to another Alila resort!

We had problems finding the exact location of the hotel when we came in from BBK city to Cha-am town and look us almost 45min to find the hotel. However when we finally arrived at our destination, we were in awe at the majestic marble steps that lead up to the open concept lobby. We were totally impressed and wowed by its granduer.

The staff seemed like they were already expecting us and served us tea and cold towel as we checked in at the counter. Then one of the staff proceeded and gave us a guided tour of the whole resort.

We stayed at the deluxe terrace. The room has modern contemporary concept, pretty spacious and airy. They have free movies and music all pre-installed....and all room (including toilet!) lightings can be adjusted to dimming to have a more romantic feel. We had breakfast in bed almost every morning...although there was not much of a selection but the quality is good.

The highlight of the hotel is definately the bathroom and its incredible rainshower....although there was also a bath tub in the toilet but we hardly used it because the rainshower was so damm relaxing and we could just go on showering forever.....not to forgot their own range of spa toiletries added to the wonderful experience. Another another fav time during our stay is the cabanas that they had at the private beach which you an relax in shelter after a sun tan...totally romantic as we can lie there watch the sea, sky and sunset....with hardly anyone but just the two of us.

Lastly i have to mentioned that the hotel provided free shuttle service to Cha-am town and Hua-hin town which was very convenient. Everything you see on the website, is as it is and actually even much better....i definately recommend you to stay this hotel if you are looking for a un-commercialised quiet & romantic retreat with your partner.

Overall here's my rating...
Service: Excellent!
(All the staff treated us like king n queen, partly caused the whole hotel had very few guests during the time of our stay so they could give us extra attention. They were all very friendly and could speak English well)

Food: Limited variety but above average quality and presentation.

Room: Heavenly bathroom,Very cosy and very modern.

Hotel facilities: They have a library and MAC laptops which u can use for unlimited time, 2 swimming pools 1 restaurant, 1 bar and Spa place (which we did during our stay, totally love it!) dont forget to buy back their in-house products!

  • Liked — the room, the staff, the private beach
  • Disliked — besides limited food selection actually nothing much....

Stay a full 5 days at this resort. Firstly, it was a breeze as they picked us up at the airport and helped us with kids and brought us on the journey to the resort. In the van, believe or not, there was a large screen and DVD player with current movies and kids movies, was very good especially when traveling with kids.

The resort was VERY RELAXING. The design, ambience, feel, beach front location is all design to help you forget your world. The place is VERY private, unlike many commercialised-Asian-beaches.

I especially enjoyed the spa, had this Alila SIgnature massage. The therapists were well trained and very good.

As for the rooms, they are all equipped with free wireless internet and Apple Entertainment hub with music, movies, and international cable TV channels. Bath room came with VERY large rain shower.

I wish they had a greated variety of food but quality and taste standard was good.

Service was first class. I feel they had even better than "Aman-resort" standard of service.

Experience yourself and you will know what I mean. Tip - make sure you see the sunrise and sunset by the beach. Amazing.

Well after a change of plans over chinese new year we flew to Bangkok and stayed our 1st night in Shangri La (which is one of my favourite hotels in the world)
We knew we wanted to head to the beach so began our search via the internet and Trip Advisor, after calling around a few places i.e: Sofitel, Hyatt, Marriot we noticed Alila and read the trip advisors views. We decided to give the hotel a call and ask whether they had rooms available. The lady informed us that they indeed had availability and when we explained we were in BKK she said they could send a car to pick us up! (obviously at a cost) So we booked the accommodation and the car.. We headed out on our 2 hours journey in comfort of a nice car supplied with COLD water cookings and candies! Great when ur travelling with a 10 year old!
On Arrival we were met by attentive staff and a very large and beautiful white staircase!
We were led to the check in and the 1st thing noticeable is the view of the hotel! They have definitely gone for nature and Funky together.... The Room was amazing, initially we were considering moving to a villa but the room was big enough to accommodate the rollaway without doing damage to ourselves (which in most hotels is a given)
The Apple TV and wireless internet is excellent and the Bathrooms are the forefront of most hotels.. the HUGE rainshower is heaven! and the bathroom is very large. They also had a wonderful Chinese theatre group perform for the new year dinner which was amazing, the food was excellent and fresh and hot! Its a pity that the evening was only attended by few guests! They really missed a great night of entertainment and food!
The restaurants served excellent food and the fact that you can use the menus from both restaurants made it easier having a child!
The bar area upstairs overlooks the active pool and beach and has a slight feel to Ku De Ta in Bali (lazing on comfy chairs listening to the ocean) The food i found was of very good standard, the presentation was excellent and good portion size! The hotel does not charge astronomical prices for the food or alcohol and though i feel this is better suited to couples, i never felt uncomfortable with a child!
I would certainly return to Alila again

  • Liked — The bed, bathroom and facilities and dinner in the cabana with the surf crashing just feet away!
  • Disliked — the aircon went off three times.. but that could happen anywhere!

My husband and I stayed at the Alila for 6 nights in the beginning of January.

We had asked for airport pick-up from Bangkok and were greeted in the arrival hall and swiftly taken to our car. The comfortable drive to Cha-am took a little more than 2 hours.

Upon arrival, we were greated by guest service with cool towels and fresh juice. Check-in was efficient and friendly and we were told that our room was not ready for a while, as it was only 10:30am. We were offered a room for restring until our room was ready in the afternoon. I really appreciated this, as it was nice to take a shower (how could we resist trying the rain shower) and have a nap.

Our deluxe room was ready at 2:30pm and our luggage was moved. Our room was such a nice surprise. High ceilings, calm music from the Apple TV, a wonderful scent from the oil lamp, candles everywhere, flowers spread over the bed and a warm bubble bath with flowers was ready for us. The room was perfect! There was no view, but who needs a view when the room is so beautiful! Just like stepping into the Wallpaper magazine!

We had lunch in the Clouds Loft overlooking the active pool and sea. Food was good (same menu as in the restaurant beneath in the evening), but portions were a bit on the small side. It was ok for lunch, but for a dinner, you would definately need an entrée as well. We also went for cocktails, or at least we tried, but after waiting for an hour for 2 drinks, we got too hungry to wait around and cancelled the drinks (which after one hour still hadn´t been started on!!!). This was unfortunate, because the setting on the deck of clouds loft was just fantastic! We opted for dinner at the Motion restaurant just beneath Clouds Loft, hoping the get faster service.Unfortunately, this wasn´t the case and proved to be a continuous problem we faced during our stay. Restaurant service was just too slow, food came cold on cold plates and orders were often misunderstood. Food itself was good, but portions were just too small and not worth the wait. We took the shuttle to Hua Hin on 4 of the 6 nights mostly to get some good food!

Upon beeing approached by guest relations, we told them about our problem, and they were very apologetic and understanding. I hope that this will get better in the future, because the restaurants themselves have great potential.

We spent most of our days lazying in a beach cabana. No problem getting a chair or cabana. It was never crowded at any of the 2 pools or the beach.

Tried the spa, but was not overly impressed by the treatments. Also here, service was a bit on the slow side.
The spa products are highly recommended and are resonably priced.

I loved the rain shower (how could you not!). We took 3 showers a day just to use the shower! Bath products smelled wonderful. I even bougth some shower gel to bring home. The bed was the most comfortable bed I had slept in all over Thailand. Air conditioning was working properly. Loved the mood light switches!

Had it not been for the bad experiences in F&B, this hotel would have been the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Stylish, sexy, beautiful and just fabulous!

We spend every January in Thailand, near this Alila which opened last February, so on this stay we went hotfoot to try their restaurant. There are two very attractive venues - an Italian with a very small (two-page) evening menu and a lunchtime menu that (oddly) is identical to the evening menu of the other restaurant, situated right below it, which has some Thai food and some "international" food.

We had a burger+fries for $8 and "battered fish"&chips for $12. First the bad news: the fries (a portion about the size of the small McDonald's fries) came lukewarm, which was a disgrace considering we were the only two people in the restaurant. The "fish" was also disappointing: the batter was flabby and it consisted of about six pieces, each the size of a large thumb. It was such a small portion overall (note that the price was not proportionally small) that I had to have another snack on my return home. If it were advertised on the appetiser menu, then fair enough, apart from the price but for a main course it is unacceptable except as a child's portion.

Now the good: the burger was one of the best we have had in Thailand, and we have had burgers at all the five-star hotels in Cha-Am and Hua-Hin plus a number of top hotels in Bangkok and Phuket. Unfortunately, due to their extremely parsimonious portion controls, the patty was so much smaller than the bun that a third of the bread was left at the end! Also the order for medium rare came out as medium well done.

The service was friendly but trying a little too hard. We would go back again for burgers, but are not keen to try anything else. On the longish stroll from reception to the restaurants, and later back, we saw a gorgeous pool with beautiful proportions and very stylish public areas. The lighting is so minimal that at night take a torch if you want to avoid accidents!

We were appalled at the layout of the place, which was very long and narrow, with only a very narrow beach at the far end. The rooms were in equally long and even narrower buildings lining both of the long sides. They looked stylish but clearly had no views whatsoever, except from the top (third) floor where your view would be the building on the opposite side of the narrow plot,. Since there are high walls down the middle of this long, narrow plot where the pool and public areas are located, the bedrooms felt like they would be a bit claustrophobic, except for the pool villas (there are 7, we were told), which looked gorgeous, although the ones we passed also had no seaviews or any other views that we could perceive.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel de la Paix is the first stylish, boutique resort in the charming coastal town of Cha-Am on the north west coast of the Gulf of Thailand closeby the famous resort town of Hua Hin. Located just 20 minutes drive from Hua Hin airport, it's bold, unconventional design fused with luxurious contemporary living makes it one of the region's hottest resorts. White sand beaches, leafy palm trees and azure waters provide the backdrop for this tropical getaway, and the resort's maze of interconnected pathways, private terraces and courtyards incorporates as much of this natural beauty as possible. For leisure and fun there are two pools: an active pool for family fun near the beach, and an adults only chill pool next to the spa. Guests can enjoy nature walks, kayak tours, mountain bike rides, water sports, cultural sight-seeing, culinary instruction or golf at one of the eight, internationally-acclaimed courses near the resort. From the grand entrance stairway to the rooftop reflecting pool, every detail is understated yet unforgettable. ... more   less
