We have just returned from 6 days in Samui. We had read that the Lamia Wanta was the gem it was made out to be...but we didn't think it was, at least not for us.
We are in our late 20's and were looking for a nice beach where we could relax on the sand and have drinks/maybe dancing in the evening but nothing too crazy. Lamai beach is not this place. We arrived at night to see scores and scores of "Hostess Bars", prostitution bars where the girls dance on poles and are completely on sale. There were literally only 2 or 3 establishments that weren't of this nature and they weren't great. There is one outdoor bar that is right on the main road where we saw the bartenders lifting up their shirts and touching themselves for customers...right on the main road!!!! We awoke the next morning to find that Lamai beach DOES NOT compare to Chaweng in terms of quality. It is NOT powder white sand and the ocean in front of the Wanta has a steep drop-off right at the shore which makes for very large waves in comparison to Chaweng. Additionally, there are plenty of lounge chairs around the pool but the Wanta was adamant that we could not move chairs onto the beach (we asked) so your choices are to rent a chair next door or lay on your towel in the hot sand if you want to be on the beach. The clincher for us was the people at the pool...ALL TOPLESS! It was a 55+ crowd for sure, with the exception of one lesbian couple (who found it necessary to frolic topless, snapping each other in the backsides with their bikini tops in the public pool shower) and almost everyone was topless. Now, I'm no prude, but there is something about a 65 year old woman taking her top off and greasing herself up right next to the breakfast area that was unsettling.
The rooms are very basic. No phone to call other rooms and our shower drain was stuck in the down position (our friends room was the same). The maid managed to pry it open when she came to clean so it could drain but then it went right back down. Additionally when I took a shower the drain backed up and filled with a yellowish sudsy looking substance that smelled like sewage. Other than that they were basic and clean with a nice balcony. The hotel is also undergoing construction which we did not know about; it's more of an eyesore than anything.
We decided the first day to move over to Chaweng beach once we sunk our toes in the powder-white sands and saw all the various restaurants and casual bars. There was no way I was going to last at those Hostess Bars. There are a few in Chaweng but they are on the back streets. We were also under the impression that we could easily take a taxi to Chaweng in the evenings from Lamai--not so much. A taxi will run you 300 Baht for two people, 100 more per person, and that's after haggling with a few drivers. They are not easy to find either and it's about a 15-20 minute drive each way due to one-way streets and the sheer distance.
All of that being said, the Customer Service at the Wanta was great. They only charged us for a 1/2 day on the day we moved even though we checked out at 1700. They were happy to make reservations for us as well for a boat trip we wanted to take (sort of necessary b/c you don't have a phone in your room).
If you are TRULY only interested on the pool and the sun, and you don't mind your children being exposed to a topless environment, Lamai is fine, and the Wanta should suit your needs. But if you think you want to have nice dinners or drinks in the evening or enjoy the sand/ocean, do yourself a favor and stay in Chaweng. We moved to the Chaweng Garden Beach Resort and absolutely loved it.
