We stayed at the Ramada Khao Lak for 10 nights in a Seaview Lanai Room and loved every minute of it. Ok, the room really overlooked the pool rather than the sea but that didn't bother us. The beach was approx 200 yards from our room and was beautiful you can walk for miles and hardly see anyone and not be pestered.
The room itself was very clean and big with modern fixtures and we had a brilliant bathtub and lovely rainshower. The sun reached our decking nearly all day and the pool was just a few steps away - we hardly needed to move at all, perfect !
We couldn't praise the staff enough, everyone was incredibly polite and couldn't do enough for us. In particular our chambermaid Wi who decorated our bed so beautifully as my husband arranged in advance for a boquet of orchids for me as it was our wedding anniversary.
It did rain a bit as we stayed at the end of the rainy season but we made use of the hotel gym (which was small but well equipped), the coffee shop with internet access and the spa including the free massage lessons.
There was a huge choice at breakfast including traditional english dishes, thai noodles, fruit and pastries - more than enough to please everyone. We also ate in the hotel twice - the first night we arrived late and had Pad Thai, the most beautifully presented we've ever had. We also ate at the seafood buffet one evening and had a table at the edge of the beach - a perfect setting and lovely food. The restaurant manager took the time to speak to us and organised for us to let off a fire lantern, with a wish, which we've never done before. We would definitely recommend eating in the restaurant at least once during your stay even though there are some lovely restaurants outside the hotel.
We had the best Thai massages on the beach we've ever had from the ladies with beds/stands on the left of the hotel as you look out to sea.
Khao Lak has an amazing choice of restaurants, we loved the Candle - walk out of the hotel down to the main road and turn right and walk to the end of the road, the restaurant is on the left just before the T junction.
I would also recommend the pancake stall outside Key Inter Travel - walk out of the hotel down to the main road and look right, it is the fourth place on the left opposite a tailors. Key Inter Travel is a family business run by Key (who arranges tours, transfers etc) and his wife Soi (who makes the most amazing pancakes) helped by their two children when they are not at school. Key is a really interesting man to speak to to get a better insight into the Thai way of life and welcomes the opportunity to practice his English (which is pretty good already) over a cup of coffee or pancake. He personally took us on a day trip to the Khao Sok national park, including elephant riding, canoe trip, lunch and mild jungle trekking and we had a great day. We wished we had more time in Khao Lak to have more trips with him. If you get the opportunity, visit his shop for a chat, have a sweet pancake and if you want a real treat see if you can arrange to have his wife's beef curry and flatbread which is his village's speciality- we haven't tasted anything better.
We absolutlely loved Khao Lak, it's really quiet and relaxing with great food and the Ramada Hotel provided the perfect base - on our flight home to the UK we were trying to work out how soon we could return !
