We stayed at the Ramada Khao Lak for 10 nights in a Seaview Lanai Room and loved every minute of it. Ok, the room really overlooked the pool rather than the sea but that didn't bother us. The beach was approx 200 yards from our room and was beautiful you can walk for miles and hardly see anyone and not be pestered.

The room itself was very clean and big with modern fixtures and we had a brilliant bathtub and lovely rainshower. The sun reached our decking nearly all day and the pool was just a few steps away - we hardly needed to move at all, perfect !

We couldn't praise the staff enough, everyone was incredibly polite and couldn't do enough for us. In particular our chambermaid Wi who decorated our bed so beautifully as my husband arranged in advance for a boquet of orchids for me as it was our wedding anniversary.

It did rain a bit as we stayed at the end of the rainy season but we made use of the hotel gym (which was small but well equipped), the coffee shop with internet access and the spa including the free massage lessons.

There was a huge choice at breakfast including traditional english dishes, thai noodles, fruit and pastries - more than enough to please everyone. We also ate in the hotel twice - the first night we arrived late and had Pad Thai, the most beautifully presented we've ever had. We also ate at the seafood buffet one evening and had a table at the edge of the beach - a perfect setting and lovely food. The restaurant manager took the time to speak to us and organised for us to let off a fire lantern, with a wish, which we've never done before. We would definitely recommend eating in the restaurant at least once during your stay even though there are some lovely restaurants outside the hotel.

We had the best Thai massages on the beach we've ever had from the ladies with beds/stands on the left of the hotel as you look out to sea.

Khao Lak has an amazing choice of restaurants, we loved the Candle - walk out of the hotel down to the main road and turn right and walk to the end of the road, the restaurant is on the left just before the T junction.

I would also recommend the pancake stall outside Key Inter Travel - walk out of the hotel down to the main road and look right, it is the fourth place on the left opposite a tailors. Key Inter Travel is a family business run by Key (who arranges tours, transfers etc) and his wife Soi (who makes the most amazing pancakes) helped by their two children when they are not at school. Key is a really interesting man to speak to to get a better insight into the Thai way of life and welcomes the opportunity to practice his English (which is pretty good already) over a cup of coffee or pancake. He personally took us on a day trip to the Khao Sok national park, including elephant riding, canoe trip, lunch and mild jungle trekking and we had a great day. We wished we had more time in Khao Lak to have more trips with him. If you get the opportunity, visit his shop for a chat, have a sweet pancake and if you want a real treat see if you can arrange to have his wife's beef curry and flatbread which is his village's speciality- we haven't tasted anything better.

We absolutlely loved Khao Lak, it's really quiet and relaxing with great food and the Ramada Hotel provided the perfect base - on our flight home to the UK we were trying to work out how soon we could return !

Ok, the issues first. We booked a Deluxe Seaview Lanai room for 8 days. The "seaview" is 2" (yes, two inches) of sea through the sunbathing umbrellas at almost a 90 degree angle from the room. What we got was a pool view room. We asked to upgrade to a villa, and were upgraded for 3 days, for an upcharge of $100 a night. However, we will be forced to move again tomorrow, and we are seriously thinking of just writing this place off as a tourist trap and head south to Phuket. Trust me, this place *IS* a tourist trap. Yes, very friendly people, but Thai people used to living off of farangs. Prices are very expensive for food, and options are limited. We came here to try to help the local economy and try something different. It was a mistake, and not only am I through with Khao Lak, but I will never book a room with Ramada again.

Let me explain that I do not nickel and dime anywhere I stay, but I expect good value for my money, especially in Thailand. This place definitely does not deliver. I spend on spa treatments, romance package meals, etc. I expect some return for that nicety, that most tourists do not partake of. Here, they take your money and smile and do nothing to make issues right.

We bought the 4 day meal ticket at 9600 baht for two people for 4 days. The first day we were given a menu with 2 choices on it. When I complained, they figured out that they had given us the 'wrong' menu. (different menus for different plans...am I the only one who sees this as a problem?) However, no effort was made to give us a credit on that meal, so basically we got 3 dinners and 4 lunches for 10000 baht, which is as expensive as eating the most expensive things on the menu. So stay away from the meal ticket special...you are better off just buying whatever you wish. Without Mr Win, we would probably have been served from that menu all 4 days.

On the bright side, the beach is very nice and the rooms are well laid out and well appointed. Unique bathtubs, from Japanese wooden tubs to Jacuzzi's help drain the frustration of dealing with the resort. The bar is quite expensive, on a par with bar's in Atlanta and Dallas, and not at all what you expect in Thailand. If you do not mind paying extra for a view you will not get, paying high rates for food and drink, and having no options to force a change, you will really love this place. Otherwise, I suggest you look at some of the excellent resorts in and around Phuket.

I will upload pictures to prove what I am saying when I return to the States. If you must come here, do not expect what is said on the web or their website to be factual, and take it all with a grain of salt. Can you see the sea from the 'seaview' rooms? Yes. Is it anything close to what any westerner would call a seaview room? Not even close! My advice is to chose to spend your money in other, less expensive places.

  • Liked — bathtubs were rather unique
  • Disliked — attitude of the resort

Management response from Marcus_Wirsching, General Manager
(Management representative)
Oct 23, 2008
Many thanks for taking the time to feed back on your previous stay and experience within our Resort.

I agree, that due to the architectural set up of our Resort, that some of our Rooms may have a certain angle to the sea view and that it can be a matter for discussions and priority for some however this has not disappointed any of our other guest so far but we certainly regret that this has left a not so memorable holiday experience for you.
We will certainly take your comments seriously and share them with our Team in order to review our procedures in the future regarding Room allocation or how to communicate the description of the room location further in order to serve you the best we can.
Once more, I am grateful for your comments.
I hope that you may change your mind and that we will be able to welcome you back to our Resort in the near future and please feel free to send me a email on your return to the US, should you wish to discuss and explain your impressions of our Resort in further detail.

Thank you and Best Ramada Regards

We travelled to the resort from Australia to meet up with our daughter, husband and grandchildren who had arrived from England. We could not have wished for a warmer welcome from the very friendly staff and as the days went on we were even more impressed by them all. Ever friendly, smiling and cheerful and our grandchildre were so well cared for by them. The staff "relieved " my daughter of her baby girl every time we visited the restaurant and breakfast room. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean. The pool is lovely and the beach magnificent. Overall it was a wonderful experience , made even better by the great staff. The perfect location for a family holiday in a beautiiful and quiet location.

We got this hotel at significant discount so value for money was the best i have ever had. Even without it though this is an excellent hotel.

Superb pool area, lovely large rooms, great bathrooms. Great location good swimming of the beach which is rare on this stretch.

Good food if a little overprice - but lots of other options nearby.

If they reduced their food and bar priceS (ignoring happy hours!) and changed their stupid pool towel set up this would be the best hotel i have ever stayed in.
