“Best stay ever on our honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

Travelled around Thailand for 4 weeks on our honeymoon and stopped at this place by chance. The staff were excellent, very friendly and service minded. Got an upgrade to a beach bungalow, which was more than what we expected to get. Thanks to Claudia in the reception who made our stay unforgetable.

Perfect Location
The geography of Khao Lak can be confusing for those who have yet to visit. The out of date maps, idiosyncratic spellings, and alternate names for the same places don't help (Yes, you too Tripadvisor - The Takua Pa restaurants are in Khao Lak!).
The reality is that Khao Lak is a region which extends along the coast for some 16kms but it is centred on the adjacent villages of La On and Ban Niang where the majority of the shops, restaurants and tourist offices can be found (don't worry, this isn't Phuket). The main hotels, however, are scattered along the coast and some are therefore a good taxi ride away from the centre. A bit of isolation may be no bad thing but I wanted to have a choice of restaurants and I chose the Laguna Resort precisely because it was within walking distance of the commercial area on the Petchkasim Road and, equally important, because it was located at the southern end of the stunning Nang Thong beach.

Notwithstanding its location the hotel is easy to miss as it does not have a particularly impressive frontage but its Reception/Lobby, with traditional dark wood and pale walls redresses one's expectations. Below the Lobby is a bar area with two pool tables, internet access, childrens play area and one the most comprehensive book exchanges I have seen in any hotel. Further down (and up - there are a lot of steps!) the restaurant, partially open air and overlooking the pool/beach, can be found. Close to the beach there is a bar and cafe and it is in this area that the low key entertainment and themed food evenings are held. Unfortunately I can't give a first hand report because I chose to explore the local restaurants (reports in the Restaurants Section but O'Rendez-vous and Smile were my favourites but the Everyday, just across the road, should not be missed and the homely Walkers Inn, a short stroll up the road, does super Thai food at excellent prices) rather than pay the hotel's prices which appeared to be two or three times higher. Breakfast was ok, with a fair degree of choice, including Asian, continental and a few typically English dishes, including bacon and an egg station, ( but you will have to buy your HP sauce in a local supermarket). However the coffee was stewed, but hot water was available - so take your own.
This being Thailand there is a spa providing a variety of massage treatments (at about £12 to £40, or c£180pp for a seven day package)

Service
The members of staff are unfailingly polite and friendly and there was not one occasion when I could not make myself understood. A gentleman with a German/Australian background (who, of course, spoke fluent English and German) was often present at reception and he gave excellent advice about the area and possible excursions.

Accommodation
The choice is between the roomy up-market chalets situated close to the pool/beach which are surrounded by fish filled moats or the cheaper, traditionally furnished, rooms in the main hotel block adjacent to the Petchkasim Road. I do not regret my choice of the latter. They are large, quiet, comfortable and boast a king sized bed, a balcony overlooking attractive gardens, a large bathroom with both shower and bath, TV with some English channels, 'fridge, plenty of storage space and, in my case, a slightly saucy Thai picture!

What to do?
Khao Lak is an excellent centre for visits to the beautiful Similan Islands (fair snorkelling) and the equally stunning Surin Islands (even better snorkelling but not to Maldives/Red Sea standards). For the former try Fantastic Travel and you will experience simply superb service from Moo Moo and his lady friends (Miss Ga Ga and Rosie).
The islands of Phang Nga Bay, with their dramatic Karst limestone scenery, should not be missed and a bamboo rafting trip will fill a pleasant hour or so. To appreciate the grandeur of the Khao Sok National Park, with one of the oldest rain forests in the world (and Tigers, although you won't see one) should take two or three days so avoid any excursion that maintains it can be done in a day or less, unless you want to just take a walk in the local jungle (beware the leeches but Khao Lak was one of the most mosquito bite free locations I have experienced in the tropics).

Pleasant hotel with nice grounds, fishponds and beachfront pool. Classic Thai architecture in main buildings with lovely ambiance, the only downside of which is there are lots of steps, so not suitable for those with mobility problems. I walk with a stick and managed with my partner's assistance. Ideal for couples or families with children. Just a 2 minute stroll to the local shops and bars which have grown since our last visit in 2004. Plenty of places to choose to eat all at reasonable prices. Still a friendly low key resort compared to the likes of Phuket.

Located at the end of a long stretch of sandy beach and within a short walk of Khaolak centre. A river runs through the resort as well as many other ponds etc, some with walkways across them. Must say I thought mosquitoes might be a particular problem but it was no worse than anywhere else.
The pool/Beach front area seemed particularly crowded but there is a quiet grassed area under the Palms which suited us.
Breakfast was OK, nothing to shout about. Other than a few lunch time snacks we didn't eat at the hotel. There are so many Resturants within a short walk with prices much cheaper than the hotels.
Rooms very spaceous with everything you might want including WiFi, and like the rest of the hotel kept very clean.
All staff were very polite and efficient. Regarding the English Language, you're on holiday on the other side of the world, what on earth do you expect. No they are no fluent English speakers but we had NO PROBLEM WITH STAFF NOT UNDERSTANDING US!!
GOOD HOTEL.

I'd read a few reviews before arriving and thankfully most were extremely good however, one or two made reference to the lack of English speaking staff etc.
Firstly, we are in Thailand, I've never been anywhere in the world (including England) where the staff are fluent in all languages. Never once did we have a problem with staff misunderstanding us - The staff in the hotel are not only excellent and attentive they are so friendly it was a pleasure to eat my lunch and have drinks. I would like to specifically mention Minzow, Sai Mai(apologies for spelling), Winzlow and a few of the trainees, who were BRILLIANT a thorough pleasure to meet.
The hotel is beautiful, cleanliness second to none, food great, admittedly more expensive than over the road, but isn't that the same in all hotels??? The location is excellent a few minutes walk to other shops/restaurants etc. However, I would also recommend Chang Thong/Golden Elephant over the road as their food is delicious and the staff lovely. The cocktail bar opposite is also excellent.
Overall, I find it very difficult to find fault in any part of my experience at the hotel and if you are visiting this hotel, then I am extermely jealous!! Ignore any negative comments, at the end of the day, you get back what you give, and if you're not friendly then you can only expect a lukewarm response.

A large complex, but one that you can spread out in. The Oriental Villas are beautiful. Good food and drink at a very reasonable price, and very close to the beach. Also close to the main road in Nang Thong, which has plenty of places to shop and eat. The hotel itself is still quiet, as it's far enough from the noise of the main road amenities.

We unexpectedly had to cancel a 3 day - 2 night live aboard diving trip to the Similan islands, and found ourselves stranded in Patong beach, Phuket for a night. Desperate to escape the horror that is Patong beach, we made way to this resort - which is well designed in the 'big is beautiful' tradition of asian resorts. We have really enjoyed our stay here. The beach bungalow is awesome, the beach itself nice enough (and importantly post Patong, not crowded), ok swimming pool area and nice enough, although not very english fluent staff. All in all, not bad, in fact quite enjoyable.
