We booked direct with the hotel and had confirmation by email of our reservation. When we arrived we were told the hotel had overbooked and they wanted to send us to another hotel. We specifically booked the Khao Lak Sunset Resort because it was on the beach and the photos looked nice on the website, so we didn't want to just be sent to somewhere we hadn't chosen. At the time of our attempted check in there were several other people who were being told the same, i.e. that there was no room for them. It appeared to us that this was a habitual practice at this hotel - perhaps a way of sending you to other hotels which had difficulty filling their rooms and getting a commission for sending customers on to them - and so this is a warning that if you are particular about where you are staying you should avoid this hotel because you could end up anywhere. The only part of the hotel we saw was the reception, public toilets and entrance and these areas were all shabby and tired - which is unusual in Thailand. Our impression was that it was an old property in need of refurbishment, so perhaps we had a lucky escape.
