“Would like to come back to be sure...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

I believe this hotel could have scored a 5 for us but there were a few factors that brought the score down. Firstly the good stuff.
We had a basic deluxe room which was finished beautifully and had lots of detailed well thought out extras in the room. All manner of toiletries (including toothpaste, which we ran out of through the holiday so this was really handy!) Cork screw, wine glasses, drink making facilities, dressing gown, umbrellas. I've been to a few 5 star hotels that don't provide this detail. Room kept wonderfully clean by our lovely house cleaner.
Location - beautiful beach. 10 minute walk to town with some good bars and restaurants.
People - Lovely helpful happy smiley staff. Which is more than can be said about some of the guests! Why can't people smile more - you are on holiday after all!
Comfortable sun beds, nice good clean towels.
Food - We had excellent experience in the Al a Carte, and lunch & the bars. Service and quality of food always good. Bit more expensive than in town - but what a location to eat - that's worth every penny extra (and it is just pennies!). I think the happy hours made the bars busier but we like to have pre dinner drink after we've got ready so quite often we sat at the beach bar on our own about 7pm and what a lovely romantic setting with wonderful service, and once again compared to UK drink prices, we felt it was fantastic value.
New Years Eve - was the best we have both experienced. Unforgettable. We didn't partake of the gala evening, went into town but returned to hotel around 10:30 for a few drinks at the beach bar. The fire works and lanterns on the beach. We loved it.
Some of the negatives I am going to mention now I believe was because we had under estimated how busy the hotel would be over Xmas and New Year.
Sunbeds - everyone has mentioned them and to honest we gave up trying to fight for the best ones - we're not that competitive! There are not enough on the beach for everyone - that can't be helped. I don't really like noisy pool environment either but we did find solace by the pool up near our room - on the higher level - where we spent our time if we weren't on excursions or in town.
Breakfast - we had to be there before 7:30 to have a peaceful time of it otherwise canteen madness broke out! Once again those happy smiley guests filled the place with joy (not!).
So mornings coupled with sunbed choosing and breakfast could be a stressful affair - that's just us though - some people seem to love the competition in the mornings! We arrived one morning at 7am for breakfast and people were already on the sun beds - they didn't budge till 9:25 - when they went for breakfast - we did this once so we could have one day on the beach we didn't bother again - too much like hard work for a holiday!
Lack of understanding of English by staff. Difficult one this as they certainly speak more English than I do Thai... but it could cause minor problems. Our room was not cleaned until after 3pm, we got used to that and worked round it but one day we were getting ready to go to Biang Nang market at 4:30. The house keeper was in the room just before ours so we asked her to wait 5 minutes and we would be out of the room. We thought she understood. When we returned quite late our room was not made up and we walked our long trek down to reception (we could have rung but was not confident the receptionist would understand) We just needed some fresh towels - which to their credit were in the room before we had walked back.
Lighting in room was awful as well, which is okay until you really need it for what ever reason.
Our room looked onto the garden/jungle which because the mosquitos seemed to like me we couldn't sit out on which was a shame for us as we like to sit out on the balcony in the evenings - but there wasn't much to look at.
Any way we want to come back next January when maybe it's not quite so busy. We think all our small gripes can be remedied by upgrading to a beach bungalow, which looked very nice, giving you your own space on the beach and just that added bit of luxury, it seems that Thomson don't offer upgrades past Deluxe rooms for as we've done some investigation - so we aim to contact hotel for that.
All in all a lovely hotel with good management. We can't wait until next year, where I'm sure it will rate 5!

Dear Sallyhatesflying,

Thank for your recent review. I am very happy to see you enjoyed your overall stay with us.

I can see there are definitely a few things we can work on and English language skills are definitely something we will address in the future.

Like yourself the mosquito's very much like me too. We normally fob the entire resort once a week to try limit the number of them around but unfortunately being adjacent to a National Park does not help in that matter.

We hope you will come back again to visit us again soon.

Kind Regards,

Ciaran McNeill

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We booked this hotel due to Tripadvisor reviews and the fact that it was child free.
Spent 10 days over the Chrsitmas and New Year period in a Deluxe Corner Room. Check in was quick and very friendly and we were shown to our room. It was then explained to us that as we were only 2 people the 2nd bedroom was out of bounds and locked............not really on as we paid for this room. I could have complained but did'nt...........maybe I should have done!
Rooms are spotlessly clean and well appointed but still fairly new. I wonder if the rooms will stand the test of time as the fittings seemed cheap.........almost like IKEA? Housekeeping was never completed before 2.00pm, not a problem as we were out of the room all day. The room was very well cleaned and stocked each day.
The hotel grounds are fairly well maintained and clean.
Breakfast area next to the beach is a great loaction. Like most other reviews, coffee service was slow, but always delivered with a smile. The breakfast buffet was of a fairly high standard but lacked imagination, standard western fair + rice and noodle and a stir fry option that changed on alternate days.
Lunch however was a whole different ball game............some of the best hotel food I have tasted anywhere!! I can highly recommend the Pomelo Salad, and again delivered with a smile.
Service at both pool and beach bars was slow at times but always a smile.
Some reviews have commented on the lack of language skills, not a problem for me as this is Thailand not England.
There is a lack of sunbeds and as a result it appears the 'german' guests bagged the beach beds by early morning, despite sighs saying towels would be removed before 09.00. Result the bedds were occupied till 09.30 then a mad rush for breakfast..........german engineering at its best.
Another reason we booked this hotel was the non compulsory gala dinners over the festive period. However we thought being New Years Eve we would go for it. Big Mistake!
The Buffet was of a fairly high standard, did not have the hot option as I hate lining up for food. Instaed opted for various cold starters which were good enough and a good selection of desserts.
Dinner included 1 x welcome drink., a bottle of wine around £30 is about right for hotel prices.
The entertainment can only be described as laughable. Musical chairs and balloon dance...........come on!
The whole evening fell flat and it felt like it was all over by 09.30pm. Maybe a Chinese Lantern for each table would help next time?
At midnight the whole area exploded with fireworks, but unless I am mistaken, none from Sensimar. They even started the countdown late, or all the other hotels and bars were early?
The gala dinner also included brunch on new years day, or rather leftovers? Just under 4,000 baht per person...mmm.
The hotel lacks any Thai feel, but that is the way many hotels are going in Thailand so we can't knock progress.
To me it felt like a Mediterranean Style package hotel and could be anywhere, except for the happy and smiling staff.
Would I go back............probably not.

Room Tip: Pool Access rooms looked good.

We spent 11 days from end of December until beginning of January. The resort has great potential but still a long way to go to be a really good spot.

Here are our pros/cons.

Positive aspects
+ Location: Very nice beach location (trees, clean and calm), very good and reasonably priced restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. Hotelfood is fine but a bit pricey.
+ The whole resort is kept very clean (except for empty glasses and bottles at the pool) and staff is very nice.
+ Excellent sports program and gym.
+ Adults only concept is convincing
+ Rooms are spacious, beds are really good

Negative aspects
- Staff is lovely but has a significant lack of training in many areas and seems to be overwhelmed. This can be really annoying. Some examples: at breakfast people wait for 10-15min until they get a coffee or new silverware, there is enough staff but they just dont see if sth. is missing, every morning we had to get silverware, salt/pepper or milk ourselve/ at the beach bar you have to wait very long for being served (only 6 tables there), on one occasion we order a snack that took 90 mins, on another occasion they forgot to order the snack in the kitchen and we walked away hungry /

- Communication in English with staff can be really difficult. Even at the reception staff often does not really understand what you want in the first place.

- Massages are offered at the pool and beach. Again nice location but price/value is bad compared with other place in Khao Lak or even Bangkok. We booked 60mins Thai massage and asked them to be tough. What we got was 48mins of the softest massage I had in Thailand. We did not complain about the time because the quality was not good.

- A/C is right above the bed which means you either freeze or sweat at night

- Houskeeping in our case usually not before 2-3pm

- Not enough sunbeds at the beach - the hotel tries to solve this by taking away "reservation towels" before 9:30 - in theory a very good idea. In practice however this means that if you really want a sunbed at the beach you have to come way before 9:00, stay seated there until 09:30 and then go for breakfast...but then it is super crowded, no silverware..... hence a stressful start in your day. After 09:30 you have no chance on a sunbed at the beach. Even during midday there are not enough sun beds for all the guests in the resorts..dont get me wrong...it is "okay" if the beach spots are limited and early birds get the best spots but they could just put some more beds or improve the breakfast service at 09:30...

- Food quality is good but overpriced compared to public places in Khao Lak. Even in the a la carte restaurant the service was mediocre at best (had to order drinks twice, waited 20mins for the bill (only 2 other tables were occupied). New years eve dinner cost 4000Bhat (~100EUR) per person excluding drinks. Other guests that attended told us the dinner show was lame. We spent a great night out with dinner drinks and entertainment for a fraction (~30EUR per peron all inclusive).

- The last negative aspect is hopefully only a personal one. One day a housekeeping girl knocked at our door and blamed us for a dirty pillow cover and that they would charge 450 Baht (10 Euros) for that. Firstly, it was obvious that the cover suffered during washing (strange yellow discolouration - just like some beach towels.....).... and more importantly, even if it had been our fault, as a hotel you simply do not charge/blame guest for a dirty pillow cover (broken furniture is a different story of course). This is part of any hotels business case. The poor housekeeping girl was uncomfortable herself and could not speak well enough to discuss the matter with us. We had to see reception to clarify the matter which felt awkward as we had to defend ourselves for sth we had clearly not done (when the receptionist saw the "piece of evidence" she instantly recognized that this cannot be done by guests)...however, there was no apology nothing. This was a really annoying incident. We hope this behaviour is not a hotel "policy" but just bad luck of us.

Bottom line: NIce location with huge potential but they just don´t tap it. If they offered premium service this would be a USP and make it a prime location.

Would I recommend it to a friend? Hmmm, very difficult question. I can recommend it to people who:
...like short distances,
...put a lot of emphasis on the location
...want a good sports programme
...do not get annoyed by poor and slow service
...do not compare price value in detail
...are willing to get up early to reserve a sunbed at the beach or are fine with hanging out at the pool instead

Dear Schwyz2011,

Thank you for taking the time to post on TripAdvisor. Your thoughts comments and suggestions are very important to us and help us improve and provide better service to future guests.

All of your comments in relation to the Restaurant Service have been taken on board and have been addressed with the Restaurant Manager. Nobody should be waiting 10 - 15 minutes for a cup of coffee. That's just not acceptable.

In relation to the Sunbeds issue - our policy is we do not allow reserving of Sunbeds before 9.30 am, The reason for this is that we try give everyone a fair opportunity to have a beach bed. Our beach is limited in size and we do not own the beach and are only allowed to place chairs on our property line. Last season we had no policy and beach beds were typically reserved by 5am by many guests. We are doing our best to be proactive in relation to this but this is a problem every resort suffers from. I totally understand that everyone would like to have a bed on the beach but it is just not possible to have 400 beach beds on the beach.

Finally in relation to the damaged pillow case - this is not hotel policy in any way. If an item is damaged it will only be discussed with by a member of our Front Office team with the guest. I am very sorry that this happened and i have spoken to the Housekeeping Manager to make sure this does not happen again in the future.

Once again thank you for your comments - they will certainly help us grow and improve our service.

Kind Regards,

Ciaran McNeill

Just returned from this hotel arriving on Dec 18th until Jan 2nd.

On arrival at 7am we were welcomed personally and dealt with within 20 minutes and shown to one of the two rooms we had booked (didn't expect any room until mid day) The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated with a pool view. The rooms had a few small issues, there is not anywhere near enough lighting, in the main room at night with all the lights on you were still half in the dark, only two bed side lamps and 1 spot lamp in the ceiling. The bathroom floor in both rooms sloped the wrong way leaving a huge puddle after showering, in one of the rooms the shower had no power at all. We requested both rooms side by side but one ended up in another block. The gardens are pleasing and the pool areas very large. During the first week sun beds were easily available, on the 2nd week if you got up later than 9am you had to take a sunbed in the shade. The pool bar didn't seem to work at all on the 2nd week especially during happy hour, there were only 4 tables and these rarely had the 4 chairs to each table. you could sit at a table waiting to be served but almost every time you would have to approach the bar staff for service. The service at the bar was very erratic if it was busy customers were not dealt with in the order of service. I just read here a customers complaint about the music around the pool bar. Yes the music wasn't up to much but in defence of the hotel it was never so loud it spoilt your time around the pool. Every hotel I have been in plays music at the pool bar, if he didn't like the music at the pool bar he could have used the other two pools which were very quite and peaceful.
The beach bar had the same serving problems as the pool bar and also had too few tables and chairs during the 2nd week for the amount of clients
We never ate at the main restaurant in the evening but did eat one time in the a la carte. I can only sum this up as dreadful. The bread had obviously been out for many hours and was like stone, we asked if the house white wine was good to drink and was assured it was , it smelt terrible and tasted worse. For starter an order was placed for bruschetta and a tomato mozzarella salad with balsamic sauce, the bruschetta was fine but it is the first time I have had mozzarella salad with balsamic chocolate sauce!!! the salad was left uneaten. For main course we ordered grilled tiger prawns, one plate were fine but the other were left uneaten, one prawn had the remnants of the food sack all over it which left it inedible the other one of the two was only partially cooked and raw. It worked out quite an expensive meal for a slice of bruschetta and a bottle of beer!
One thing the hotel management might want pass onto the bar and restaurant staff is that they should not hover over the customers shoulder when the bill is being paid, give the bill, leave the table and collect it as the customer leaves.
The breakfast buffet could not be faulted except it always took ages to get a waiter to bring coffee. The mid day food in the restaurant was very good with a good choice on offering
Both Christmas and new years hotel entertainment was very cheesy and I am glad I didn't book the diners on offer on both of those days. On new years eve they advertised there would be Thai dancers, sure they were local but there was nothing traditional about the dancing, it resembled a 6th form school dance group with school children doing something they obviously put together themselves, I felt embarrassed for them.

The hotel fitness room was excellent and the programmes for aerobics, yoga etc. if you wanted them they were very good. The so called water sports equipment at the beach was extremely poor, 2 canoes, 2 windsurfers.

All in all we had a very nice holiday at this hotel and would return again but not during a peak period and wild horses would not drag me into the al a carte again.
One small minor foot note is that the bar and restaurant staff need better English skills to work with foreign tourists.

I have spoken to the Chef in relation to your dining experience at our A La Carte Restaurant and I can only offer my apologies for your sub standard experience. Its certainly something I will investigate. We certainly pride ourselves on trying to serve fresh delicious food each and every evening. We arrived the day before NYE and were given a gorgeous room with a mahoosive bed. The resort is lovely. We didn't stay all inclusive which I am thankful for as we did try the buffet on numerous occasions and it was the same every night although it was to a high standard.
The beach is a bit rocky but there is a huge stretch of sand just round the headland. (There are also two massage shacks on that stretch of beach that are much cheaper than at the hotel)
There is one large pool where the bar is and three other smaller ones where the swim up rooms are. Plenty of beds available at all times. Here is my one complaint: the pool music. As I sit here writing this review, the same song has been played 7 times in a row after I have already been up and asked them to change it from 'the dawning of Aquarius' which was also played on repeat numerous times and very loudly! This morning at 9.30am the music was on loudly too but it wasn't as bad as Monday morning when they were playing eminen complete with copious amounts of swearing full blast at 10am! Firstly if people want to listen to music they will listen to their own choice on their iPods. They don't want to listen to Thai versions of Lionel Ritchie music or eminen swearing at them as they try and relax. I complained via email about this and when noone returned it, I complained to the general manager who was not one bit bothered. His words were 'the pool area is not a sterile environment and we want it to have an atmosphere' .... Sorry but have you just spent a large amount of money to stay in a hotel that you can't relax in because of loud unnecessary music that starts at 9.30am and goes on all day... Mostly on repeat?? I think not. Completely spoiled my holiday. I even have ear plugs in and I can still hear it! Rant over!

The best thing about the staff are it's staff (excluding the general manager). Every single staff member has a smile for you and can't do enough for you. James the restaurant manager was such a sweetie and he should be promoted to general manager. He truly cares about our views and really listened. And when my boyfriend proposed to me on the beach (yay) he got us a bottle of champagne even though the bar had shut! Love him!

So great hotel, clean, wonderful staff, great location but be aware of the pool music! Don't expect to be able to read your book on peace and quiet xxx

Dear Roundhaylady,

Many thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts and comments on TripAdvisor.

Congratulations on your recent engagement!!

Your comments are very much appreciated. I am very sorry to hear that certain aspects of your stay did not meet with your expectations.

In relation to the pool bar - the Pool Bar is an active area - we have a swim up bar and serve delicious cocktails and food all day. We have happy hour with reduced price cocktails for 2 hours in the afternoon. We also use this area for our Sports and Entertainment program where we regularly have Aqua Zumba and Aerobic Classes in the mornings. We use this area for dance lessons in the evening. Music is an important factor in all these activities. We will certainly look at the playlists being used in the Pool Bar but music is an integral part of this area.

Each week our management team meet to discuss the events of the week, and your experiences regarding your stay at Sensimar will be discussed and your feedback taken on board.

We genuinely try to offer excellent standards at all times and we are very sorry that you feel we failed on this occasion.

Kind Regards,

Ciaran McNeill

We leave today, a great shame.....
I still feel the same at the end of my holiday as I did at the beginning.
Perfect location, there's loads to do, lots of day and half day trips that are all taken care of for you by reception, an efficient and slick operation.
The tsunami museum up the road in Bang Niang is well worth a visit as is the market.
The sunbeds are, I feel, an issue, although I do understand the need to keep the beach uncluttered as its not an overly large beach but on saying that it's plenty big enough.
The service is not overly fast which maybe at the beginning of your holiday some might find a little irritating but by the time this lovely hotel and staff have made there mark on you, you really don't mind how long you wait!!!!!!!
Over and out unfortunately, from Sensimar.

Room Tip: Poolside rooms are very good and cool, out of the sun

We stayed for a week just before Christmas and had a fantastic time. Friendly and courteous staff, great location with a lovely beach and just located at the bottom end of town so an easy walk into Khao Lak for restaurants/bars/shopping etc. Really clean hotel with good facilities. Breakfasts were really very good (we ate in town for evening meals) but the bar snacks were very nice for lunchtimes. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone.
