“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

We stayed for a week just before Christmas and had a fantastic time. Friendly and courteous staff, great location with a lovely beach and just located at the bottom end of town so an easy walk into Khao Lak for restaurants/bars/shopping etc. Really clean hotel with good facilities. Breakfasts were really very good (we ate in town for evening meals) but the bar snacks were very nice for lunchtimes. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone.

Exactly the same as our thoughts Part one. We have now a feel of the place, and would thoroughly recommend this hotel. It's location for us is perfect, plenty of places to eat outside the hotel if you want a change, a good size town to walk round in the evening, yes it's all geared towards tourism but you can just mooch about without getting hassled which is good. There are no road side pubs playing 're runs of only fools and horses and loud music from night clubs. It has a lovely laid back easy going feel about it. If you're after the night club scenes then this isn't the right place for you. The hotel staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. In spite of it being pretty busy you don't feel on top of any one. One small niggle might be the lack of beach chairs for the amount of people there, the sand can feel pretty hard at the end of a long day sunbathing!
Other than the chair thing I have no negatives at all. I'm having a very happy Christmas and made a very good decision. Thank you Sensimar.

Dear Sal C,

Many thanks for both of your reviews.

I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.

In relation to Beach Beds on the beach - we are limited in space to where we can put Beach Beds. We do not own the beach. Our property only extends to the tree front so we must honor and respect the local laws in relation to this but we have lots of Beach Beds around our pools.

We hope that you will choose at some point to return to us in the near future - your house by the sea.

Kind Regards,

Firstly no children is a real biggie for me so straight away we have the first star.
I'm staying here as I write this review. I wanted to start writing it from the beginning of the holiday as our perceptions change with the passage of time.
Staff very friendly, beach lovely, room specious, bed ginormous.......
The pools are very clean with a choice of four none of which feel busy although the hotel is full..
Next review in a few days..............

This is a very pleasant hotel with excellent staff who make it special. It is very convenient for walking to restaurants etc. We had a room on the first floor. We wish we had realised we could upgrade to a pool room. This would have really added to our stay. A note in rooms asking other guests to be considerate with talk and television sound would have been appreciated. Our room was very comfortable and very well serviced by Heed. We booked half board but even though James was excellent in attempts to provide me with vegetarian options we chose to eat out even though we didn't benefit from our half board charge. We found that eating out was a great Thai experience. The breakfasts were very good with lots of choice. We loved the beach bar but four tables and chairs were not enough. The view there is amazing and one of our favourite places to sit and relax.. The pools were lovely but the pool bar closed earlier than stated on the information. Another bar somewhere would be a plus. The coffee bar was lovely - could this be combined with a drinks bar? There wasn't anywhere we didn't get excellent service and smiles. We loved the maintenance in the gardens and the path sweepers, porters the bar staff, the restaurant staff and James who was attentive and helpful at all times. Jonny the path sweeper was a real character. I wish I could remember all the names of all the exceptional staff. A lovely holiday. We booked Sea Dragon evening sunset cruise and Ecotours elephant and bamboo rafting trip through the hotel which we also very much recommend. Again a lovely and helpful lady (among many) on reception. A special memory is off the Thai dancing evening. A lovely experience. All in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday and hope these comments help future guests and the hotel

Really liked this hotel and would return. Not too big but nice quality

The choice in Thomson seemed to be between large luxurious hotels a bit out of the way, a lot all inclusive or small and friendly hotels on b&b. sensimar seemed to be a nice middle ground. Small but a little bit more than the cheapest hotels. We had no idea what to expect but I really really liked it.

Rooms were new clean and spacious. Nice big shower lovely balcony. We were high with nice view and sun later in the day and we often retired to the balcony to relax after a hard day at the pool. Rooms have a big fridge which you can stock which is a nice touch. Also if you like to watch tv whilst the local tv is rubbish the DVD player has a USB socket so stick some films on a USB stick.

Downside as others have mentioned is the internet is so expensive. 25 euro per week so for 11 nights the only way to do it was 2xweek so 50 euro. And for that you have 1 item logged in at a time. At least having taken 2 'weeks' they overlapped so for three days we didn't have to play pass the internet connection there is free wifi in lobby but it really should be free or at least less expensive. However it excellent and works not only in room but pool areas and bar /restaurant.

Food. Firstly the constructive criticism. Breakfast was okay. Nothing special. It ended at 10am and then there was a continental breakfast but this was generally not replenished very well. Would be much better to do breakfast til 1030 and make sure it was fully replenished up to then.

Dinner was okay the one night we ate in the a la carte and pretty disappointing the directors gala dinner. It's not an issue with so many good restaurants nearby so I wouldn't let it put you off sensimar but I wouldn't go half board.

However the lunch time food was amazing. We ate I think every day except when on an excursion. We ate a lot of good food in khao lak and bangkok but I can honestly say the lunches at sensimar were the best tastiest Thai food of the whole trip. Well priced too. Lots of western choice but we ate Thai soups and curries mostly.

Staff were really friendly in restaurant, pool service, reception. Faultless James the restaurant manager was very friendly and approachable but all the staff were lovely.

Surprised there isn't a proper spa. With the whole sensimar vibe I'd have thought it would have been a priority. They do massages on beach and beside pool and prices were very cheap

Bar was cheap also. Various happy hours meant you rarely had to pay more than 100 baht for cocktails and the main bar was a nice setting beside the beach.

Not that we took part but good activities during the day and a good gym.

Also Thomson rep Alan was very friendly, full of good advice and humour

Would definitely return or try another sensimar hotel

Room Tip: Not sure I would go for a swim up room as most seemed to be in shade and it wasn't too private w...

I think, it's fair to say that the most important reason to choose Sensimar over all the other resorts in Khaolak was the high rating on TripAdvisor (AND the "adults only" concept). So, the impression of my first days at Sensimar was like "did we get to the right hotel? maybe there is another Sensimar somewhere else that gets all the good reviews?". More on that later.

I'll start with the good things.
1/ adults only - great. Serenity and tranquillity, literally. No screaming running kids, no jumping in the pool, no throwing food all over the restaurant - just peace and quiet. The relaxed and unspoiled atmosphere, in general, was the main cause not to cancel the booking and not to move to another hotel (although there was a time when I really wanted to do it).
2/ nice and clean sandy beach. A few rocky sites here and there, but it didn't keep us from swimming, because the rocks were big (hence visible), so you could always remain in a safe distance. The rocks also served a kind of natural wave breakers, so it was possible to swim even on stormy days.
3/ both pools were always clean and cool (thanks to trees around them). It was a nice way to refresh at a sunny afternoon.
4/ even on busy days, there were always some available sunbeds near the pool and at the beach. No shortage of space. There is an important thing, though: a lot of trees at the beachside, i.e there's always shade. But the German guests seemed to enjoy it.
5/ drinks and snacks at the pool bar were reasonably priced - a rare occasion for a beachfront property.
6/ a lot of activities (mostly for German guests, but they were predominant, so I guess it's fair).

Now the negative. I must say that my experience is somewhat different from most reviews. Maybe I was just unlucky?

1/ at the time of booking (27.09.2013) I asked the hotel for a room with kingsize bed on higher floor, if possible. Nevertheless, upon arrival we were given a room 1112 - on first floor with nice view onto the walkway and the gym. I was told that this is the only available room, because the hotel is full. After a while, I was shown another room on 2nd floor in the same building, but it was lower category (superior) without bathtub. It was unacceptable, so we decided to keep the first room, but were promised to be moved after 3 nights to a "good room closer to the beach". It was done, our new room was on 3rd floor in "mountain" wing (3134) with a pool view. Much more quiet place with less noise from the outside.
I do understand that room requests are submitted upon availability. What I don't understand is that we arrived precisely at the check-in time (around 2 PM) and there were people who arrived later in the evening, but they got better rooms (at least, closer to the beach). I also don't get why is it so hard to pre-arrange rooms according to guests wishes (like they do in Pullman Arcadia on Phuket, for example).
2/ the room itself looked much better on pictures than in reality. Good thing: Grohe bathroom fixtures. Bad thing: very poor lighting. Very poor. No, really, VERY. I wonder how other guests (who said that "they cannot fault a thing" about this hotel) did their make-up or got shaved. Another bad thing: air-con just under the bed - pointed at your head. I sincerely hope that whoever сame up with this idea shall be sentenced to life in this room. It's that simple: either you catch cold, or your room gets stuffy.
More than that, boring white walls in corridors, cheap painting, broken tiles - looks like this resort is 7-10 years old, but the thing is that it's supposed to be fairly new. I wonder what it would look like in a few years...
3/ another annoying thing: housekeeping. First two days our room was never cleaned before noon. I called the reception and politely asked them if this was a coincidence or a common thing? They apologized and told me that from now on my room will be made up "on high priority basis". Needless to say, that the next day it was cleaned at 11 AM. "High priority basis", they said... Being fully booked doesn't make any excuse in this case. There was a clear shortage of housekeeping staff which could be easily solved. Instead, some rooms were cleaned even after lunch, as we noticed. Unacceptable for a beach resort.
4/ wi-fi for a charge. To be fair, a small charge, but in these days, it's nonsense. In any 2-3 star hotel in Khaolak it is free. In any small cafe or restaurant it is free. Why not make it free in 4 star property? More than that, only one device could be connected at a time. If you check your mail on your laptop, you can't use wi-fi on your phone and so on. Ridiculous.
5/ breakfast. Mediocre. I'm not too picky, but it was clear that if you come late (after 9 AM), you get less choice (especially fruits). Staff was polite and tried to be quick, but wasted too much time on useless things (i.e running here and there with coffee and tea pots). It would be easier to put tea and coffee pots on one table so that the guests could serve themselves. Later, when we moved to aforementioned Pullman on Phuket, I discovered an even greater invention: they used to put the thermos flasks, filled with green and black tea and coffee, right beside the buffet table. First - you take what you want and when you want. Second - it's always hot. No need for waiters to run around and refill. Hence more time for clean the tables without any hurry.
6/ staff was very polite and courteous but their english skills vary from very low to mediocre. Not once I was able to explain anything to the staff and be understood. It always took some time to figure out what I need. I know it is hard for Thai people to learn and speak English, but at least they should be able to understand the guests. I'm very patient person, but sometimes it's tiresome to keep explaining same things again and again.

I liked Khaolak very much. It's a great place to go, if you love quiet. I'd even consider returning to Sensimar if they fix most of the issues. And I believe that things would have seemed different, if only we've been given a nicer room :).

Room Tip: mountain wing is much better, ask for rooms 3xxx or book the swim-up

Had a great 14 days at the Sensimar, rooms superb, the resort was faultless. Only 1 criticism, it lacked a centre point, a heart, ie a bar area with music for guest to congregate in the day and evening
Having said that Iam coming again a recommend it to everybody
