“Fantastic luxury escapes deal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

We stayed for a week recently as part of a luxury escapes package deal and it was everything we could have hoped for . This is definitely a family resort catering for parents and kids in the restaurants and with a great playground and amazing pool. We chose a pool access room and this was perfect for us. Our kids aged 8 and 5 were happy to swim all day. We really enjoyed the day spa where we had 4 hours of treatments each. As we had read previous reviews try and book these before you arrive . We ate at many beach restaurants and MaMa's and the restaurant attached to Sharkey's bar with the whole fish in ginger sauce was exceptional. Meals in the resort were also very good particularly The Meal and The Sunset . Parents need to factor in that the resort is a good 1.5 hours from the airport with it making an almost day of travel coming from Australia . Having said that we had a very comfortable drive in with our driver. If you want a holiday with your children and or friends that's really inexpensive and very relaxing this is the place to go . The weather we got was amazing so go before the end of April to miss the rainy season .

On our arrival we were shown around by a Dale (who sadly has now left) and he was very informative and a great person to deal with. On the whole we had a wonderful time and there were plenty of places to have a meal at the resort although we did go to a couple of little restaurants on the beach. We found the service in the restaurants & beach bar to be a little slow at times which could be frustrating. The tours we organised through the ladies at reception were all very good. Rooms lovely, clean and cool, housemaids do an excellent job as does their laundry service. Massages were included in our vouchers but a word to the wise they are heavily booked so as soon as you check in go and book them.
Janne one of the Managers (Duty I think) was very good and great to chat to.

Room Tip: Rooms 301-306 or 401-406 are good rooms and quieter.

My husband and I recently spent 8 days at Mai Khaolak Resort & Spa and had a wonderful time.
We were upgraded to a villa, which we loved. All the staff were so friendly and attentive. We had a few meals and all our breakfasts at the resort which were all enjoyable, but the rest of our meals were eaten on the beach which were all lovely, so cheap and you really can't beat the sun setting over the ocean. We had heard that the resort was noisy with too many children, but we really did not find this. One thing though, if you are taking some day trips (we went to James Bond Island and did the elephant trek) they are cheaper to book through the tour guide on the beach rather than the resort. We booked through the resort and found out later they also use this tour guide but charge more. We had such a good time, we want to go back next year.

Room Tip: We stayed in a garden view villa and overlooked the Sunset bar and pool. It was very private and qui...

The reason to go to Mai Khao Lak was the Groupon we bought - 8 nights for under $1,000 for family of 4 including Buffet Breakfast and 8 hours of massage plus much more - how can you go wrong??? Well, at first we were disappointed due to extreme heat, just left the Shangri La in Santosa Island, Singapore - and it was a big difference - BUT - after fist couple of days we realized how nice the staff were, the location was isolated - and you had to "fight" to get a seat on the shuttle bus into the small township - but overall it was great. The food was plenty in quantity and variety and very good quality, too. They fixed the Air Con as soon as we mentioned it - it was always clean, the pool was hugh and overall it was definitely worth the money - we nearly got the full price back in massages we booked - which should be done as soon as you arrive as they were very popular and limited available spots. If you look for an "adventure" or "shopping" holiday - not the spot in my opinion - but for a peaceful and relaxing family holiday in natural surroundings and most newly built - a great spot.

Room Tip: Some rooms have direct access to pool - not so good if you have young kids as water is pretty deep t...

Can't go wrong by staying at Mai Khaolak Resort & Spa. Fantastic rooms, great service. Khao Lak is somewhat remote to the rest of Thailand so if you are wanting a holiday just to relax this is a great location. Dine at the resort or eat on the beach at one of the locals restaurants. Remote but still close enough to the local attractions. Similian Island trip is great, swim with sea turtles. If thats not enough go ride an Elephant. Make sure you include bathing with theses beautiful creatures. One of the best experiences of my 55 years. DO IT!!!!!!! Leigh

We are a family with a one and three year old. Just came home from staying at Mai Khaolak with 4 other families from my mothers group (10 adults & 10 kids in total). We stayed in pool acess rooms which were fabulous as we could swim while our kids napped (we packed our baby monitor). Our room was close to the swim up bar and we took advantage of happy hour every day.

We spent most of our time in the pool. The rest of the time on the beach (the resort has a big box of sand toys). We ate mainly in the restaurants along the beach for lunch and dinner. They all seemed to be similar in price. However, our stand out favourite with consistently good food and fast service was "Be Friend" (first restaurant on the right), they have a couple of high chairs and sand toys too).

The resort is super friendly for young families; big shallow section in the main pool, big cots that are off the floor, heaps of high chairs and taller toddler chairs in all the hotel restaurants, melamine plates and cutlery and friendly staff.

I would definitely consider going back here with friends again.

We stayed at Mai Khao Lak in mid April for 2 weeks . The room was lovely , spacious and comfortable for our family of 3 , including my 15 year old son. Loved the little touches such as beach bag , flip flops and beach hats . We arrived after a 25 hour journey to find we had to wait 2.5 hours to get into the room . This was not ideal and I think they should consider an earlier check in time to accommodate early arrivals such as ourselves
Loved loved loved the beach . The sun loungers were the most comfortable I have ever experienced and after the initial few days were readily available with no stress involved. The massages provided by the Spa ladies were wonderful and a must have.
I had booked B&B.as I remembered how cheap a Thailand could be - we were not disappointed at all. The beach restaurants were wonderful and we regularly ate for £11 for the 3 of us including drinks !! Bargain and not once did any of us get the dreaded holiday dodgy belly !!
Staff very friendly and smiley - my son was stung by a jelly fish on our last day and the lady at the spa ran around making him some lotion and potion to apply which worked a treat. !!! Kick the duty manager was on hand as well to offer reassurance and concern - good attentiveness.
Did a couple of trips - James Bond Island and the Simian islands - good value for money but a bit too busy and touristy for me .
Overall we loved it - we can't stop talking about it . If you want a quiet adults resort this is not for you . The majority of guests when we were there were loud Aussies who allied their loud kids in the pool at 7am but it was a toss up between them and the zircon as to which was loudest !!
We wanted a quiet resort /area and we got it on the whole - I would go back mainly because the beach and scenery were amazing . The resilience of the locals is wonderful - it's amazing to remember what they went through 10 years ago and where they are now - they deserve us as tourists to keep visiting !!!

Room Tip: We were on the second floor overlooking the pool bar - lovely room . Not sure about pool access room...
