The reason to go to Mai Khao Lak was the Groupon we bought - 8 nights for under $1,000 for family of 4 including Buffet Breakfast and 8 hours of massage plus much more - how can you go wrong??? Well, at first we were disappointed due to extreme heat, just left the Shangri La in Santosa Island, Singapore - and it was a big difference - BUT - after fist couple of days we realized how nice the staff were, the location was isolated - and you had to "fight" to get a seat on the shuttle bus into the small township - but overall it was great. The food was plenty in quantity and variety and very good quality, too. They fixed the Air Con as soon as we mentioned it - it was always clean, the pool was hugh and overall it was definitely worth the money - we nearly got the full price back in massages we booked - which should be done as soon as you arrive as they were very popular and limited available spots. If you look for an "adventure" or "shopping" holiday - not the spot in my opinion - but for a peaceful and relaxing family holiday in natural surroundings and most newly built - a great spot.

Room Tip: Some rooms have direct access to pool - not so good if you have young kids as water is pretty deep t...

Can't go wrong by staying at Mai Khaolak Resort & Spa. Fantastic rooms, great service. Khao Lak is somewhat remote to the rest of Thailand so if you are wanting a holiday just to relax this is a great location. Dine at the resort or eat on the beach at one of the locals restaurants. Remote but still close enough to the local attractions. Similian Island trip is great, swim with sea turtles. If thats not enough go ride an Elephant. Make sure you include bathing with theses beautiful creatures. One of the best experiences of my 55 years. DO IT!!!!!!! Leigh

We are a family with a one and three year old. Just came home from staying at Mai Khaolak with 4 other families from my mothers group (10 adults & 10 kids in total). We stayed in pool acess rooms which were fabulous as we could swim while our kids napped (we packed our baby monitor). Our room was close to the swim up bar and we took advantage of happy hour every day.

We spent most of our time in the pool. The rest of the time on the beach (the resort has a big box of sand toys). We ate mainly in the restaurants along the beach for lunch and dinner. They all seemed to be similar in price. However, our stand out favourite with consistently good food and fast service was "Be Friend" (first restaurant on the right), they have a couple of high chairs and sand toys too).

The resort is super friendly for young families; big shallow section in the main pool, big cots that are off the floor, heaps of high chairs and taller toddler chairs in all the hotel restaurants, melamine plates and cutlery and friendly staff.

I would definitely consider going back here with friends again.

We stayed at Mai Khao Lak in mid April for 2 weeks . The room was lovely , spacious and comfortable for our family of 3 , including my 15 year old son. Loved the little touches such as beach bag , flip flops and beach hats . We arrived after a 25 hour journey to find we had to wait 2.5 hours to get into the room . This was not ideal and I think they should consider an earlier check in time to accommodate early arrivals such as ourselves
Loved loved loved the beach . The sun loungers were the most comfortable I have ever experienced and after the initial few days were readily available with no stress involved. The massages provided by the Spa ladies were wonderful and a must have.
I had booked B&B.as I remembered how cheap a Thailand could be - we were not disappointed at all. The beach restaurants were wonderful and we regularly ate for £11 for the 3 of us including drinks !! Bargain and not once did any of us get the dreaded holiday dodgy belly !!
Staff very friendly and smiley - my son was stung by a jelly fish on our last day and the lady at the spa ran around making him some lotion and potion to apply which worked a treat. !!! Kick the duty manager was on hand as well to offer reassurance and concern - good attentiveness.
Did a couple of trips - James Bond Island and the Simian islands - good value for money but a bit too busy and touristy for me .
Overall we loved it - we can't stop talking about it . If you want a quiet adults resort this is not for you . The majority of guests when we were there were loud Aussies who allied their loud kids in the pool at 7am but it was a toss up between them and the zircon as to which was loudest !!
We wanted a quiet resort /area and we got it on the whole - I would go back mainly because the beach and scenery were amazing . The resilience of the locals is wonderful - it's amazing to remember what they went through 10 years ago and where they are now - they deserve us as tourists to keep visiting !!!

Room Tip: We were on the second floor overlooking the pool bar - lovely room . Not sure about pool access room...

Mai khaolak resort was brilliant. We stayed for ten nights and we had the pool access room, which the kids absolutely loved. All the staff are exceptionally helpful, with special mention to the food and bev. manager JEFFREY, and also JACOB, our friendly barman, who always went out of their way to make us fell like V.I.P's while we were there.
We got the motel deal thru a special promotion like most aussies that were there at the same time as we were, however, now having stayed here, i would come back to this place in a heartbeat.
We broke up the 10 days by doing some excursions, with most of the excursions booked thru the motel and KHAOLAK VISTA, a great local company. Ask if you can get on "OIL's' tour -a beautiful little thai girl with great english skills and great knowledge of the areas she will take you to.
With the pool literally at our doorstep and the beach only minutes walk, we didnt have to go far to entertain ourselves on our "down days" either. There was a tennis court there as well that the kids really wanted to use, but it was just way too hot for us to do so.
The resort provided beach towels every day for use at the pool and beach, so this was one less thing we had to pack.
The resort's breakfast buffet was sensational, with all types of traditional and non traditional breaky treats.
There are many fantastic restaurants down on the beach just outside the resort for those who want to eat away from the hotel - all foods, drinks and ice all safe for us -ELICIOUS and MAMA's were our regulars.
My wife tells me the SPA at the resort was awesome, and she fully recommends the coffee scrub, but book all your spa treatments AS SOON AS YOU CHECK IN, as they are extremely popular and book up days in advance.
The only thing we could fault the rooms with was that there is not much storage space for suitcases, etc, but with some clever re-arranging of the tables and stools in the room, this was easily overcome
A fantastic stay

Our family had a very enjoyable stay and couldn't fault the hotel staff or services. Buffet breakfasts were excellent with so much choice and good quality food. All of the restaurants were exceptional and our kids enjoyed their time at the "fun break" club for kids. I would have to say that the best part of our stay we're the wonderful Thai massages at the spa.
Very friendly and obliging staff always offering to hold my baby so that I could enjoy a meal or a massage. I would recommend Mai Khao Lak to anyone looking for a relaxing family holiday. My only suggestion would be that if your fussy on your hard/soft bed try to book it in advance so that you get a chance for the type of mattress you like.

Room Tip: If I was travelling here as a couple I would request a room with pool access in the adults section.

I stayed at Mai Khao Lak for 5 nights with my husband and one-year-old girl. Upon arrival we received a refreshing welcoming drink and some cookies. Our room was one of the basic ones overlooking the pool. It came with many extras such as umbrellas, beach towels, beach bag, hats. Mini bar and room service were very cheap (compared with Australian prices). It was a great room for those with young children, as there is a curtain that separates the bedroom from the lounge area. We were provided with a cot that was placed at the foot of the bed. The bed itself was large and comfortable. One negative could be that the bathroom is not really a separate room - shower and toilet had doors, obviously, but sink area was connected to lounge and in same area as wardrobe. Although this was odd, I didn't find it an issue at all and, overall, the room was large and comfortable.

The buffet breakfast (included) was fantastic and catered well for children. I would recommend to skip the buffet dinners and eat at the very cheap and tasty restaurants that line the beach. They have a beautiful outlook, with many having tables and chairs right on the sand. The resort's beach restaurant is also great value.

Khao Lak itself is a lot smaller than Phuket towns, which I found to be a positive. We got the shuttle bus in to the main town one day, which wasn't that exciting but maybe worth a look-see once. The beauty of the place is in the relaxing resort routine - buffet breakfast, exploring the beach, swimming in the pool, afternoon massage on the beach (so cheap and good - don't bother to pay more for the resort day spa), happy hour cocktails, etc. One disappointment is that the beach didn't have the clear water you would expect of Thailand - it looked beautiful from outside, but a bit murky when you get in there. Not so nice for swimming, in my opinion. I'm not sure if this was due to the rainy days before our arrival.

Overall, the area was picturesque, dining delicious, massages relaxing and resort luxurious. For the price of our stay ($100 per night, including breakfast) we were extremely impressed.
