“Great Family Friendly Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

Our family had a very enjoyable stay and couldn't fault the hotel staff or services. Buffet breakfasts were excellent with so much choice and good quality food. All of the restaurants were exceptional and our kids enjoyed their time at the "fun break" club for kids. I would have to say that the best part of our stay we're the wonderful Thai massages at the spa.
Very friendly and obliging staff always offering to hold my baby so that I could enjoy a meal or a massage. I would recommend Mai Khao Lak to anyone looking for a relaxing family holiday. My only suggestion would be that if your fussy on your hard/soft bed try to book it in advance so that you get a chance for the type of mattress you like.

Room Tip: If I was travelling here as a couple I would request a room with pool access in the adults section.

I stayed at Mai Khao Lak for 5 nights with my husband and one-year-old girl. Upon arrival we received a refreshing welcoming drink and some cookies. Our room was one of the basic ones overlooking the pool. It came with many extras such as umbrellas, beach towels, beach bag, hats. Mini bar and room service were very cheap (compared with Australian prices). It was a great room for those with young children, as there is a curtain that separates the bedroom from the lounge area. We were provided with a cot that was placed at the foot of the bed. The bed itself was large and comfortable. One negative could be that the bathroom is not really a separate room - shower and toilet had doors, obviously, but sink area was connected to lounge and in same area as wardrobe. Although this was odd, I didn't find it an issue at all and, overall, the room was large and comfortable.

The buffet breakfast (included) was fantastic and catered well for children. I would recommend to skip the buffet dinners and eat at the very cheap and tasty restaurants that line the beach. They have a beautiful outlook, with many having tables and chairs right on the sand. The resort's beach restaurant is also great value.

Khao Lak itself is a lot smaller than Phuket towns, which I found to be a positive. We got the shuttle bus in to the main town one day, which wasn't that exciting but maybe worth a look-see once. The beauty of the place is in the relaxing resort routine - buffet breakfast, exploring the beach, swimming in the pool, afternoon massage on the beach (so cheap and good - don't bother to pay more for the resort day spa), happy hour cocktails, etc. One disappointment is that the beach didn't have the clear water you would expect of Thailand - it looked beautiful from outside, but a bit murky when you get in there. Not so nice for swimming, in my opinion. I'm not sure if this was due to the rainy days before our arrival.

Overall, the area was picturesque, dining delicious, massages relaxing and resort luxurious. For the price of our stay ($100 per night, including breakfast) we were extremely impressed.

We purchased a deal (as most others staying there had) and though it was good value, we would have booked out after the first couple of days, and foregone the balance of our stay. I am not usually one to complain, and felt we had an obligation to help an area and its people regenerate their tourism industry, but the level of service and facilities are not what we usually experience when travelling through Asia. We usually stay in 3-4 start hotels, so are not pretentious enough to expect to be fawned over, but we did expect better than what we found here.
Upon arrival, we were left waiting 5 hours for our room - yes we were early, and expected a delay, but the hotel was not booked to capacity and any other hotel we have stayed at prior would have found a solution to the long wait. Once we did have out room, our luggage failed to arrive - even after waiting nearly 2 hours. We returned to the lobby to find it still waiting, with the porter not making any effort to bring it to our room.
The staff are friendly enough, things just dont seem to get done though.
Rooms are adequate - EXTREMELY hard beds, even with the mattress toppers. Bathroom design is less than workable, with the room entry door being between the shower and toilet..
There is a waterway running through the hotel grounds - the smell of sewerage is dependant on the water level, with some days being really unpleasant.
The hotel does feel a bit like a concrete jungle, with the gardens needing a fair bit of work and the decor a bit stark. This resulted in the temperature being more acute and uncomfortable.
Food in the hotel - breakfast was OK, with enough options to cater for most people, however it was more like eating at a coles cafatteria than a 5 star hotel. The seafood BBQ on the beach - dont bother.
Eat at the beach - at least the food is fresh and well priced. Cocktails are better as well!
The pools - the one by the beach was probably the better, as you were able to get service near it. No such luck with the upper pool even though there was a swim up bar - no sunlounge service and getting a drink, even a soft drink, was difficult.
The beach did make up for the hotel though. Lovely water, and unlike the hotel, some shade to be found. Found a good spot with a hammock so I managed to read 5 novels within the 10 days we were there.
This is not a place for teenagers though, as no water sports or activities available, unless you travel to the islands for scuba diving.
Distance to Phuket town is nearly 2 hours drive, so if shopping is on your itenerary, you need to organise a driver for the day and prepare to be away for 8 hours or more.
We like Thailand - we just wont be returning to Khoa lak.

We stayed in two adjoining suites with our son, his wife and two little kids (one a baby) and the set up was perfect as was the service, the staff and the many services offered. Being out of town didn't bother us at all - the transport arrangements were excellent. We still talk about how friendly the locals were and particularly the resort staff who took to our two grandchildren in a genuinely helpful and friendly manner. The many beachside 'cafes and bars' gave us lots of options when it came to dining out for example. A well run resort - I am sure we will return.

Room Tip: Poolside one floor up we found perfect.

We stayed for 10 days and we were both in heaven. The poolside rooms are unique. We loved the people and the town. Everybody was very friendly and we felt we were getting a fair deal. The taxi drivers were very reasonable. And the massages were to die for. When we go back I want one of the chalets with the private pool.

We had a great holiday for 8 days. Chalet was excellent. Breakfast was very good. Massages at the spa were very relaxing. Staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. While the resort was well located by the beach, it was a little far removed from Phuket. Local shopping was very restrictive.

Room Tip: We had a chalet which was very private, and in a quiet area.
