I stayed at Mai Khao Lak for 5 nights with my husband and one-year-old girl. Upon arrival we received a refreshing welcoming drink and some cookies. Our room was one of the basic ones overlooking the pool. It came with many extras such as umbrellas, beach towels, beach bag, hats. Mini bar and room service were very cheap (compared with Australian prices). It was a great room for those with young children, as there is a curtain that separates the bedroom from the lounge area. We were provided with a cot that was placed at the foot of the bed. The bed itself was large and comfortable. One negative could be that the bathroom is not really a separate room - shower and toilet had doors, obviously, but sink area was connected to lounge and in same area as wardrobe. Although this was odd, I didn't find it an issue at all and, overall, the room was large and comfortable.
The buffet breakfast (included) was fantastic and catered well for children. I would recommend to skip the buffet dinners and eat at the very cheap and tasty restaurants that line the beach. They have a beautiful outlook, with many having tables and chairs right on the sand. The resort's beach restaurant is also great value.
Khao Lak itself is a lot smaller than Phuket towns, which I found to be a positive. We got the shuttle bus in to the main town one day, which wasn't that exciting but maybe worth a look-see once. The beauty of the place is in the relaxing resort routine - buffet breakfast, exploring the beach, swimming in the pool, afternoon massage on the beach (so cheap and good - don't bother to pay more for the resort day spa), happy hour cocktails, etc. One disappointment is that the beach didn't have the clear water you would expect of Thailand - it looked beautiful from outside, but a bit murky when you get in there. Not so nice for swimming, in my opinion. I'm not sure if this was due to the rainy days before our arrival.
Overall, the area was picturesque, dining delicious, massages relaxing and resort luxurious. For the price of our stay ($100 per night, including breakfast) we were extremely impressed.
