“stunning place,,, brilliant staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

we stayed at the sands at the beginning of april, first impressions when we arrived , that it was very big , but also beautiful.

We were checked in very promptly and the porters dealt with all the lifting, our room was huge, we had a seaside junior suite, the view of the pool and sea were lovely. if there was one downside to our room, was that the shower tended to leak into the sink area, but that's not the end of the world.

The actual hotel is very big , but I have to disagree with some of the other reviews, the landscaping makes the hotel look stunning , and to boot the whole place is absolutely spotless a huge credit to all the ground staff.

the rooms were cleaned everyday if you wished, and the cleaners always done a brilliant job, while this technically probably isn't a 5 star which everyone keeps moaning about, this is still probably the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in.

Breakfast
im not sure what some people expect for breakfast in the way of choices, but I really couldn't have asked for any more......fruit, croissant, cake, full English, omelettes right down to curry , good tea and coffee, fruit juices, there really couldn't be anymore choice!!.
we ate in talay only once but the food and service was all very good, if there was a slight gripe with the hotel was the price of alcohol, tiger and singa prices were particularly overinflated compared to everywhere else we ate.

a big downside though ,which had nothing to do with the hotel , or the staff, it was other holidaymakers..... the staff all around the hotel are always happy , polite and smiling, and the amount of people I heard speaking to staff in such a disgusting way amazed me, yet they held there smile and dignity at every point, all credit to the staff.

if you are thinking of going to the sands , I can honestly say you wont regret it, unless your expecting the ritz standards at travel lodge prices.........beautiful hotel great staff great location

5 nights in a pool access junior suite .... great price of THB4,600 nett/night during the low season. Clean, comfy, quiet room. Would I pay almost double the above price in the high season? No. Only because I'd get a better alternative.

Room Tip: Definitely a pool access room

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

Stayed in the resort for 8 days. After reading the reviews I had already set my expectations. Booked the hotel taxi service and had no issues there. Checkin and checkout was smooth. Rooms were clean and tidy. Overall stay was relaxing with good service and true value for money.

Pros
1. Value for Money, the price I paid I think this is the best I could have got.
2. Staff is very helpful and courteous reflecting the true thai hospitality.
3. Location is good, close to restaurants, shops etc but still quiet and peaceful.
4. I prefer Pool Access rooms over private pool villas (not an option in the resort) and not many resorts provide that.

Cons
1. Restaurant menu could be better with more options (Not sure why Talay cannot serve in rooms). But whatever limited menu was available tasted good but not great.

Recommended if you
1. don't need top notch quality. Like many mentioned wear and tear can be seen in the rooms but rooms are clean. SPA is very basic but therapies are well executed. Restaurant provides decent food but limited options.
2. are not looking for something which gives thai feel. The rooms are very simple and modern with no thai-ness but hospitality is truly thai.
3. are looking for a family getaway and ok with lots of old couples and families with kids in the resort.
4. are ok with not so great beach. There are some rocky parts and some sandy parts. Sand is not the best quality but overall beach is clean and quiet.

Room Tip: Try to get pool access villa. True value for money..

2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2014

5 Stars for this hotel is failure in the rating system. It is important because clients are influenced by the rating system when booking. The rooms are extremely small when compared to other hotels in this category. The in room facilities are poor. Water floods the bathroom floor when one showers. The poor quality of the shelves in the bathroom are already showing signs of wear and tear and a little mould, chips and stains. Were the rooms twice as large there is a possibility the hotel is worth a three star rating. There is no plug in the coffee making cupboard so one has to find one elsewhere in the room. Instant Nescafé! 3 packets only! The fridge is empty which is fine, but no cold bottled water. Only 2 bottles in room which includes your quota for teeth cleaning as the water is non potable.
Strangely, in this very small room there is a step down to the cramped lounge area. A hazard for the inattentive guest! The balcony has a plastic covered lounge which is hot in this humid climate. But at least there was a fan!
The breakfast is pretty tasteless and the large serving area is littered with shelves of tins - baked beans and various fruits. The food in all outlets is oriented towards Europeans and the Thai food is a pale imitation of Thai cuisine.
The gardens are lovely but more foliage plants would add to privacy. The pools too, seem well thought out with a separate area for little ones.
Overall, this resort has little to do with the marvels that Thailand offers. Needless to say, after 2 days of a 10 day stay, we have opted to forgo our payment and book at a resort we know is 5 Star!

This hotel is in a good location in Khao Lak. We stayed B&B, we didn't eat there apart from breakfast. Breakfast was OK, plenty of choice. The meals were quite pricey so we opted to eat out during our stay and there is so much choice in Khao Lak within walking distance.
We were there at Easter, the hotel was fully booked, but we never struggled to get a sunbed, there always seemed a lot, no need to get up early like some reviews suggest.
The hotel is new and modern, I would have given 5 * but I had a couple of niggles that management need to address:-
1. The pool was quite dirty (The Peace Pool), lots of sand on the bottom, I never saw it being cleaned during our 2 week stay, and it was hot, like a bath.
2. Again the pool, it was signposted as quiet peace pool, but it certainly wasn't, it was full of noisy kids, even though they have their own pool. It should be signposted as Adult Only.
3. Not much atmosphere at night, the bars are quiet, no background music.
Overall a good stay, the pool access rooms are definitely worth the extra. The rooms are quite small, too small for 3 really, the bathroom takes up a lot of room with a huge free standing bath, that we never used.

Room Tip: Pool access without a doubt

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the Sands for 2 weeks in April for relaxation, diving and sampling Thai culture. This hotel ticked our boxes on all fronts. As a family group of 5 adults we stayed in a 2 bed sea suite plus a separate standard room. This met our needs perfectly with the beautiful suite and balcony for chilling out. Diving at the Similans (with Sea Dragons) was superb as was the elephant trecking and bathing and action packed day trip to James Bond island (including sea canoing, floating village, reclining Buddha temple cave, monkeys and tsunami memorial). Enjoyed our relaxation days by the Peace pool (which became that way once the no children sign was
clearly positioned!) and the daily happy hour (and a half). Restaurant eating in Khao Lak overall was superb and very cheap with a good selection walking distance directly from the hotel. Moo Moos cabaret should not be missed for the laugh and Bang Niang beach road (less than 10 mins by taxi)
offered an even wider choice of restaurants and bars. Thank you Khao Lak and the Sands for a fantastic experience!

Excellent:
Stylish and Modern, Landscaping is beautiful, Located close to a range of shops and restaurants, Hygiene and cleanliness (all dining areas), Facilities which cater for a wide range of guest-types, friendly staff (especially housekeeping), Talay restaurant was fantastic in all respects, Massage Sala, Cooking and fruit carving classes, Candlelight dinner by the beach is a must-do for romantic occasions (but reserve well in advance)
Average:
Floating Market restaurant - breakfast buffet same everyday - plain tasting food lacking thai authenticity that you can get much better and cheaper at restaurants outside of resort. This resort's staff are pleasantly nice and friendly but unfortunately are let-down by their weak english skills.
Bad:
Soviet-block style accomodation, Sands rooms are very small (upgrade to pool-access/sea-view room is well worth it), rooms are getting run down (paint and fixtures), showers are mouldy, Beds are uncomfortable and starting to get tired and have 'camel-backs' in them. They offer to change the top pillow layers of the mattress but it doesnt really help. Our biggest let down was food and drink pricing in the restaurants which was extremely expensive by thai-standards and more expensive than at home. To top that off, they add tax + a service charge and by the time you leave a tip the bill adds up very quickly. To make it further confusing some parts of the resort have tax + service charges already built in to the list price so you need to be careful of 'hidden' charges.
Overall we were pleased we stayed here because our accomodation deal was good, but we probably wont return unless some improvements are made. On another note be prepared if you come here to tolerate people from other countries - it's a real mixed lot here and people have different standards about controlling their children so it can get noisy at times.

Room Tip: Sands Rooms - are close to reception and are above the pool-access rooms. Quiet but very small and d...
